In this video, I'll show how I installed a shop sink where there was no plumbing access.
The portable sink I used is the Serene Life SLCASN25 which I purchased here -amzn.to/33fcv20
This specific portable sink has a much larger basin than the standard portable sinks. That makes it also useful for washing parts and leaving them to dry.
If you are looking for a smaller portable sink just for handwashing, take a look at this one - amzn.to/363UOUX
Someone commented with the great idea of putting one of these sinks out on the front porch so they can wash their hands before entering the house as a preventative measure against COVID, Flu, and other illnesses. As this is not heated, it will not work outside in freezing temperatures.
The shop area with the tools, CNC machines, and work areas where we are most likely to get our hands dirty and need to rinse parts is in the back of our building. There's no plumbing or drains back there, so we spend a lot of time walking back and forth to the sinks in the front office of the building.
I was thinking about hacking together a portable sink using the following parts, but when I came across this premade portable sink, it seemed like a lot easier solution. Here are the parts that I planned to use for the DIY sink:
- Utility Sink - amzn.to/2I0CyTq
- Foot Pump - amzn.to/3622BCS
- 1/2in Flexible Tubing - amzn.to/377WwE7
- 5 Gallon Bucket (one for fresh and one for greywater) - amzn.to/33hzMke
- OPTIONAL 7 Gallon Bucket for larger capacity - amzn.to/2JdPUvC
- OPTIONAL 7 Gallon Water Cube - amzn.to/363Cnjd
If you need heated water, you could use a 5-gallon bucket heater blanket, put a lid on the bucket with an insulation blanket to cover it.
- 5 Gallon Bucket Heater Blanket - amzn.to/2HABiGi
CONCLUSION:
We've been using it for a while now, and the convenience and time savings far outweigh filling it and emptying which is easy. We've only had to empty and fill about once a week.

This was the best assembly video I found so thanks. We spent about 45 trying to get this thing on. Other videos showed an unrealistic assembly where it just popped right on. Finally found this video and had to lay on it to get it on. Thanks

Glad it worked for you. I've heard that lubricating it with something like cooking oil, or hand sanitizer gel makes it pop together easier.

To get the basin onto the 2 columns, I put cooking oil on the tops of each column and aligned the basin. Then I literally did what you did in the video: I put my entire weight (feet lifted off the ground) on the one side and then sat on the other side. I heard the clicks. It won't ever come off now--I can guarantee you. Thanks for the help.

Nice, cooking oil is a good idea. It is a challenge to snap on. I might try alcohol or hand sanitizer next time as this also provides lubrication and evaporates after.

Very helpful! Mine is intended for a similar purpose (wet sanding & washing parts contaminated with metal/polyester/leaded glass dust that shouldn't go into sewer or septic) and I wasn't sure if the bottom reservoir was divided. Since it's continuous, a bucket is necessary if I ever want to use it for shop or family hand washing.
@engineerable
@engineerable 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good use for containment. The bottom is indeed not divided, and therefore I don't really understand the intended use case that the manufacture had where the drainpipe would be connected to one of the openings, and the water would be recirculated. Yes, the water will need to drain into a bucket. I have a vibratory tumbler from which I drain the wastewater into a bucket and allow it to evaporate, and then can scrape out the solidified waste.

Some folks are complaining one of the posts is hard to get turned into the groove. I used cooking spray on the treads and was able to turn it into the correct position without damaging the post from too much pressure turning.

That's a good idea! I didn't think of using a light oil. You may have seen how I had to sit on it to get it to snap in. Sometimes I use rubbing alcohol, or gel hand sanitizer as a lubricant that needs to evaporate later.

Try to lubricate with alcohol (hand sanitizer gel) or olive oil.

I have watched a number of videos assembling this unit and also the one that comes with the holding tank for the dirty water. They all seem to assemble it a little differently. And they don't show what to do with some extra parts that come in with the unit. Also similarly to you I put my entire weight on top of the basin in order to make it click in and I still couldn't get it to click in and I weigh like 145.

Try to use some lubricant on the connection, like olive oil or hand sanitizer (will evaporate once assembled).

😂 yeah, it sucks. Someone recommended lubing it with cooking oil. I've also found that alcohol or hand sanitizer (gel alcohol) works well as a lube that evaporates.

Hello. Thank you for your video but do have a question for you if I may. I do own this sink but have not used for a while now but want to start using again. Only thing is there has been old tap water sitting in it. I have drained the fresh water tank and left caps off to dry out. Now I would like to clean up the fresh water tank before reusing again. Thinking about using some disinfected bleach/hot water mix to clean the tank. So I am wondering if you have cleaned your sinks fresh water tank and what your recommendations in this situation. I looked at the manual and called the company with no help. So again appreciate your feedback! Jessica 😊
@engineerable
@engineerable 4 ай бұрын
I have not needed to disinfect it as we are always adding clean tap water to it (tap water is chlorinated) I don't know if bleach will do any damage, but since tap water is chlorinated, it's equivalent when diluted to the same level. Only use a very small amount in water. Don't need much. Hydrogen peroxide diluted will also disinfect it.

@@engineerable Thank you for your feedback. I only ask because of not using it for a long period of time. Bought this sink for my husband during a medical situation to make it easier for him to clean up. That way he didn't have strain/travel to far in his recovery. Again I appreciate the help. Have a great day! Jess

Great video man I'm thinking of buying one to use as a sink to wash dishes in. How is the drain? I'm drinking of removing the screen but not sure how easy it would be to do.
@engineerable
@engineerable 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Drains well. I removed the screen, which pops into place and is difficult to clean. Replaced it with one of those small drop in sink strainers. Perfect fit. I keep the hose short so the end is not in the water in the the drain bucket. That way it drains faster.

I can see it solves a problem for your circumstances but it's going to be cold and inconvenient to fill/empty. Would be interesting to know how it goes but I think I'd rather walk :)
@engineerable
@engineerable 3 жыл бұрын
Your concerns are valid. In our case, the shop is relatively climate controlled, so it won't get that cold, and we don't have hot water at the bathroom sink anyways :) We've been using it for a while now, and the convenience and time savings far outweigh filling it and emptying which is easy. We've only had to empty and fill about once a week.
@engineerable
@engineerable 3 жыл бұрын
It would be nice if there was a cold weather option with an insulation blanket that goes around the tank, and a heater pad underneath. Since we're in Georgia, it doesn't really get cold enough for this to be an issue, but I can see how it would be if you live/work further north. Next project heated shop sink! I think in that case I might buy a 5 gallon bucket heater blanket amzn.to/2HABiGi, and a foot pump amzn.to/3622BCS and DIY my own sink.
