so doing this on a home network, would the DHCP server assign them an address? No matter what I do i see them having the same address after all of this.

DHCP servers assign IP addresses to systems on the network as long as everything is configured correctly.

At first glance, that seems like a much more IT-centric topic than it does being related to Cybersecurity. That said, if I get enough interest in a particular topic, I will certainly take a look to see if it makes sense.

hi, how do you make it so that you can go online even if windows server's dhcp server is running live, when i state dhcp i can't get online

You need to have a default gateway set so that all other traffic not in your network is sent to that system. I also recommend researching how DNS works because you need the traffic to go to a server that knows about other destinations.

I have an EDGERouter with dhcp and a windows server with add adhcp, when I turn dhcp on I can't get online, should I not turn off the router dhcp server@@JonGoodCyber

You don't have your default gateway correctly configured on the server if that's the case. You also shouldn't be running multiple DHCP servers on the same network as that can cause issues.

@@JonGoodCyber thanks for the nice answer it's like this ar the router is turned on all the time and it's not the server at night so I have a UDM router you can make it so that the router itself turns off when the windows server dhcp is live also the router dhcp is turned on when the windows server dhcp is off

probly a stupid question but how do devices on the network know to go to my DHCP server to get an IP? Would they not just request one from the router first? I can turn DHCP off in my router, so the request then goes where? Or what tells the clients where to go?

Most consumer (i.e., home) routers come with DHCP enabled out of the box, however in an enterprise, you'll have a dedicated server or system working as a DHCP server. Clients (i.e., desktops, laptops, etc.) by default are configured to look on the network for a DHCP server but if they can't find one, you either have to manually assign a static IP address and other information....OR you just won't have an IP address that lets you use a network. I highly recommend researching about DHCP as it's an important networking concept.

I'll be taking the google cybersecutity certificate from coursera to get a feel for it. What do you recommend for someone who is new to this field? I kno I will have to try projects on my own and things like that . Just looking for guidance
