@@JonGoodCyber So, I'm confused... to someone with no prior knowledge of the IT world. You would still recommend they learn N+ before A+? I want to hear more feedback on this as I want to get back into the field. I started on my CCNA but the information I have is severely outdated now and I have to start over somewhere so I'm thinking N+ really might be a good start or go back to CCNA.
@JonGoodCyber

There are many reasons why the A+, at least from a certification standpoint, isn't necessary in the tech world today, but the full discussion isn't best suited for the comment section. The short-ish summary is that the majority of professionals don't need the hardware information, and any of the valuable information is just reintroduced in other certifications, or it can be learned as someone grows in their career. From what I've noticed, the people who continue to push the A+ today either do it because they did it and insist on people following the same dated path (gatekeepers), or they have been potentially brainwashed by the CompTIA marketing efforts (kudos to CompTIA) that are persistent that's the only way you will "learn the fundamentals," which is certainly not correct. It's not necessarily that the information will somehow reduce your maximum career potential, but my students and the people who ask questions want to follow the most effective and efficient path. I've never had somebody ask how to go slow, but if I did, I would say get the A+. My free eBook ( jongood.com/getstarted/ ) provides the full roadmap of skills and certifications that I recommend if you are interested.

If you’re getting the course for free like myself which was through a program in my city from a college’s business development program then it’s worth taking the time to complete especially if you have no prior knowledge and want a basic understanding of cybersecurity in the role of an analyst. More than that if you have the time to commit & complete it’s good for mental morale that you set a goal and see it through. I do believe this course serves a purpose to give you exposure to discovering how much more you need to learn to pass your exam and to gain an understanding of what you need to be able to apply. I’m in course 5 with three more to go and will see it through to completion. I’m also not banking on the google course alone to aid me in passing and getting an entry level job in cybersecurity.

At the end of the day, people have to make the decision as it impacts their career, but at least they have a better understanding of the pros/cons and what to expect. As described in this video, the program has a lot left to be desired, but it's a lower risk opportunity to see if people can make it through a very introductory course as things only get more difficult from here. That said, I don't remember the last time somebody contacted me to get into the career field and being ok with slowing things down.

I wonder if the push to "just do updates" is related to meager IT budgets and staffing. "We don't have the time to do a careful managed rollout. Part of the issue is definitely related to their business area. This will definitely be an expensive situation and I'll be curious to hear about how the contracts were structured to see who has to cover the bill.

question no schools teach splunk? you have to find/take online courses!! so in the real world, wouldn't the employer teach you how to really use it for their purpose? and do they understand that no REAL SCHOOLS/UNIVERSITIES TEACH THIS?
@JonGoodCyber
@JonGoodCyber 4 күн бұрын
Regardless of the training option, they all have limited time, and even the quality options aren't going to be able to teach you everything you'll ever need. Cyber Security is very much a career field where you need to get good at not only learning from training programs, but also from self learning if you want to be successful. I'm not sure what you mean by a "real" school/university, but just because something isn't taught in a program, doesn't mean you can avoid learning it if it's a requirement of a job. The people that are highly successful in this career field take ownership of their journey and find a way to learn what they need. As shown in this video, there's trial versions of many common commercial products that you can experiment with as well as comparable open source options, like Wazuh in this case, that will at least teach you how the category/type of tool works.

If it's not experience as in a job, you can't label it as such because it's not the same. Doing so will not look great when an employer starts looking into it or asking you about it during an interview, and it's likely to irritate them as an attempt to bypass what's listed in the job posting. I discuss projects in this video, so you'll definitely want to go back through that section to see how to list them, but essentially, if you haven't had a job before, you just won't include the "experience" section.

I’m currently homeless and have a question. I’m staying at a shelter that is providing the funds for me to take a COMPTIA A+ course (10 weeks), I’m currently enrolled in it and I am not so interested in hardware/software (know the insides of a computer) etc.. I’m much more interested in cyber security. I really want to finish because I have only a few weeks left and it’s not costing me anything and I also have a good grade but that’s because I find a lot of answers online which our profesor says is ok. I just don’t feel super fascinated about it and I feel like I am wasting time but I am also gaining knowledge just I just don’t feel interested. Should I take some courses at a college? I feel very unsure
@JonGoodCyber
@JonGoodCyber 5 күн бұрын
I'm sorry for your unfortunate situation and I'm sure that is difficult. Given that you're homeless, you should be putting all your effort into trying to get a job so that you can start to build a way to support yourself. Certainly, if you can find a job in tech, that would be great, but even a "temporary" situation would be extremely beneficial, and then you could pivot into tech as you build your knowledge/skills on the side. For learning tech at this point, you should be utilizing any free resources that you can and you should absolutely not be pursuing paid college courses that are either expensive or putting you into debt. Paid resources have their place in a career progression, but you should be able to afford basic life necessities (i.e., food, shelter, etc.) before even considering putting a bunch of money into training. Does that mean you might have to go slower? Possibly, especially at first, but you don't want to unnecessarily keep digging a deeper hole to climb out of.

My daughter got a C in her Computing class in college, she thought the Internet was all on her iPad. Sigh, I failed as a parent. I myself am a 58yo, unemployed, due to a merger. I have 26years of experience in It, everything from Infrastructure to Devops in AWS. I dont want to do Devops anymore, so I recently attained my CISSP, it wasn't easy, but I did it. Now, I'm literally wallpapering the internet looking for a cybersecurity gig. Nothing yet, but plenty of offers to work in AWS as a cloud engineer, which I DONT WANT. I have built entire networks, always with security built-in, hence my networks never got broken-into. What Im now looking for is a work from home gig, monitoring networks, with an app such as SentinelOne. I think I can provide a potential employer the comfort level they they can take it to the bank, sleep well at night, etc. Any suggestions to pivot into this field ? So far Im encountering resistance because Ive never worked in "Cyber". No I haven't, Ive always built in security into everything I have done, so Ive never had the luxury of sitting back and just monitoring. Now, I want a role such as this because being 58 you do tend to slow down a bit. Anyway, any suggestions would be appreciated, cheers!

What’s the difference between IT and cybersecurity?
@JonGoodCyber
@JonGoodCyber 6 күн бұрын
Although there's a lot to describing the differences, Google does a pretty good of comparing the two at a high-level: -IT is a broad field that focuses on an organization's technology infrastructure, including its development, management, and evolution. IT professionals use computers and networks, develop software, and design solutions to support business operations. -Cybersecurity is a specialized field that focuses on protecting systems and networks from cyber attacks and data breaches. Cybersecurity professionals use proactive strategies to identify and mitigate security vulnerabilities, such as managing passwords, using firewalls and anti-virus protection, and verifying software updates. They may also use two-factor authentication to access devices, software, or network information. If you want an even simpler way of describing it, IT builds the house, and Cybersecurity defends it.

You are certainly welcome to your opinion, but you are also making assumptions about situations/comparisons that weren't discussed in this video and are not relevant to the initial question prompting this video. Additionally, I encourage people who've seen success, myself included, to be cautious about pushing paths that worked previously because "that's how things have been done in the past," as things have changed quite a bit, even in the last 5 years.

At the end of the day, the true value of certifications is based on employer demand because the ultimate objective of them is to help you get a job. After that determination, we can certainly further assess if certifications live up to their promises, deliver quality content, etc. like I have done in this video, but those are still secondary to employer demand.
