Install and safely retrieve pulley saver from the ground

A demonstration on how to install a pulley saver friction device from the ground, and then how to safely retrieve it in a controlled manner to prevent the hardware impacting the ground.

Most presenter are too eager to demonstrate their techniques on "how to climb a tree" but none actually realise that demonstrating the first stage for setup (as in this video) is the most important beginning for any would-be-starters. Good effort mate, ive finally found a useful video. On the side note, the video steps are too fast, perhaps an extended short video shoot from a low tree branch with step by step sequences will help to demonstrate how the pulley system is secured. Thank you

This seems like a good way to install a pulley remotely to secure a shortwave wire antenna. That's what I'm going to try to use it for anyway.

Hi Dan, Rather than using an extremely long climbing line, would it be, somehow, possible to use a second throw line for the installation and then pull the climbing line through the pulley very last? I'm just learning to climb and I used a pulley for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It makes a huge difference for double rope. Then yesterday, at Tafe, we used a cambium saver and it was crap. It made little difference (to the climb) than using natural crotches (They were silky smooth Blue Gums (Eucalypts Saligna)). I'm sure the tree appreciated the use of the cambium saver through. P.S I learned to foot lock yesterday. I was very happy to finally crack it.

I'm not an aborist but I use a very similar homemade pulley saver, with this DMM "Pinto Rig" pulley in fact. 1 reason for choosing the video. Except mine is 2 layers of webbing stitched together with sewn loops around the top connection holes. It's used as the anchor point for a Manila climbing rope, attach static rope to a shackle on the end splice, pull it through/up and tie it off on a nearby branch. Not able to use a Prusik as seen here unfortunately (or the "snap") so instead need to use a separate length of rope installed above the loop/eye to release the pulley when finished to bring it down. In my case the pulley goes back around the limb, not ideal but I only use throwline to control the descent. Was still interesting to watch this example, thanks.

47 years as an climbing Arborist and video even confuses me! And I been doing this for decades exact system...I trained many Arborists best to show on a symplified rig point or small tree to convey concept.... can be done without climbing line in pully...throw line instead...no need to have 4 lengths of climbing line just 2!.....

This can be done with a throwline. It installs the pully and then the rope can be pulled up. That way you dont need 4 times the length of rope. A pilot line can be used for retrival if disired. It is better for installing rigging lines in a secondary tree that you dont want to climb. Then it saves time, if you are good with a throw line.

@@robthompson1399 I made a special weight with a nut and bolt. It does not pass through the pully but stays flat against it. It needs to be compact and heavy. You attach it to the throwline. First install your throwline over a single branch then one end goes through the pully and your bolt is attached. Then the other end feeds through the loop side of the pully saver. Second fase. The pully should begin to ascend as you pull the throwline and the loop end will also ascend, the throwline should still be inside the loop. Once the pully goes over the branch it will go inside the loop. Once that is done let the bolt come down. Take the bolt off and attach your rope. Pull the rope through the pully and ascend. Once up attach the part for retrival. I use this very rarely as I usually ascend in srt but it is useful when you need it.

@@robthompson1399 if you want the pully saver to come down without using the little ball retrival, attach a throwline to the retrival part and when you pull your rope down retrive the pully saver with the throwline.

I'm trying to get my head around it, to visualise the process. I'm guessing that maybe the floppy throwbag hinders entry to the stiff eye ?

Wow this is why I like the Single rope best. No friction saver is needed but you gotta have a 400 dollar climbing device after you've bought literally hundreds of dollars worth of rope, gear and climbing saddle. Why couldn't you just use a 2nd rope to drag the pulley up with your climbing line in the pulley? Ropes going over the branch right? Stop the pulley just short of the branch and tye that rope off ?

So, for this technique to work, you need to climb to the anchor, disconnect your line from your harness, and thread your splice through the retrieval ring. This is what you are talking about at about the 3:30 mark?

Don't think so, I was under the impression that he means to just thread your tail through the thimble. It does warrent a visit to the anchor point though...

Not an arborist, but a challenge course trainer and installer. This system looks unnecessarily complicated, but has some useful tips in it. What is really throwing me off is the retrieval ball. It didn't seem to serve a purpose - It looks as though it could have slipped right through that metal ring. Can someone shed some light on that?

I use this pulley saver almost daily; I'm yet to get it snagged. No doubt it could happen, but actual experience says snagging is not the *likely* scenario, merely a possible one.

Absolute waste of time on the install. The retrieval is no more simple than hoping over a lower limb when descending to the ground , which will prevent the friction saver from hitting the ground. We are tree WORKERS and we are there to produce NOT play around.
