The advice sure is the right way to go thank you. I managed to get as far as installing Davinci, but it chokes. Its for reasons, not to do with your advice. It is QT and Python again at work here. If I can get Davinci to start up, this will be great. Your advice at least helped me to get this far. However, using the exact steps you did with the exact Fedora etc, Davinci wont run because of the following error. " This application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt platform plugin "xcb". Available platform plugins are: linuxfb, minimal, offscreen, xcb. " Strange that I got to this unresolvable Python/QT nonsense following the same advice. Wherever Python and or QT goes, goes trouble - guaranteed. They are half baked languages.

You or someone else could also setup the container and put it on a container registry, that way it would make it even easier for everyone else and future you to get it running. Maybe leave away the program itself... Or put together a docker file so that it is easier for everyone, too.

:3 Awesome! I've wanted to use DaVinci since I've wanted to get into editing videos for personal and to make money, and I'm part Italian/Greek (also, Da Vinci was vegetarian, and I'm vegan, so that's cool), but I've heard it barely works. This video was in my feed. DaVinci looks so much better than Shotcut, and Kdenlive, though I've used them a bit with not much complaint (picking what to edit isn't so easy, and effects aren't so easy to figure out).

Distrobox aside have you had any issues getting Resolve to work in Linux with a Radeon card? I have 6950xt moving over from a 2080S. None of my media will import into Resolve. If it does import the clips are blank and only load an audio track on the timeline. I am using the free version and I've discovered the codecs are very limited. Unfortunately it doesn't matter how many times I try to convert it to a listed supported codec it does this exact same thing when I import the video files into the software. The specifications on gaining all the codecs on Linux state you need the Studio version and an nVidia card so I just want to verify if you'd had any issues before I drop $300.00 on the Studio version only to find out it still doesnt work with my Radeon card.

The problem with Resolve, especially on Linux is it's focus on professionals like editors in movie studios, etc. Industy standards for web formats like the H.264 video codec or AAC for audio just won't work with the free version (the latter one not at all), so you got to treat it more professionally. I myself use the Studio Edition with a Fedora 39 distrobox container for a dependecy consistency and record my videos with H.264 (mkv) and PCM as the codec

Good day Michael, what system are you running on your pc? If you run fedora directly is the container needed? I am a windows user with grave concernes about coming developments and privacy when it comes to windows. I do not know the first or last thing about linux and there major inconsistencies when you use the term Linux and DaVinci Resolve together... Sorry for the late reply, your video is more than a year old but I am now being forced to look into this option as it seems windows is set to infringe on it's users privacy in a few months time. Thank you.

I run Fedora 40 currently. The reason on why I find the container approach much better than a native install is, because if a dependency gets updated, it will break the installation unless you manually fix it again. On Fedora 38, some of them got updated quite frequently, which meant manual fixing like every other week. There is also another advantage to Distrobox, as you can use the Linux version that Resolve itself wants to use (Rocky OS). Their version is very outdated though, which is why I went for Fedora instead

@@MichaelNROH Good day, Thank you kindly for the reply, this does make sense, I was just wondering what version/ flavour you were running and then obviously we know what container you were using. Does the container require updates? And, could they potentially "break" an install? I am a total noob to linux so please do forgive my possibly idiotic question.... Thank you.

MP4 as in the format is not the problem. The free version of DaVinci Resolve on Linux does not support H.264 (AVC) or H.265 (HEVC). That only works in the Studio Edition due to licensing costs, which are usually covered by the Operating Systems. The newer AV1 codec works flawless, and if that is not an option, I would recommend recording with a different video codec

Resolve's individual "programs" are being built differently. The Editing mode usually reads both user and system fonts, while Fusion only reads system fonts by default. I talked about this at the end of this video: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/j37Xm4WeZtuYlaM

The post by @Afif87123, farther up in the comments section, ended up being the fix for me: Make sure you have xhost installed on the host system. Then in a terminal, on the host system, enter the following two commands: xhost +si:localuser:$USER xhost +si:localuser:root Try installing DaVinci Resolve in the container, again. It *should* work, now. Seems as though it was a permissions issue that was preventing the container system from being able to access the display server on the host system.

This does seem promising. But as a Linux Noob. Resolve compability has been the thing that is keeping me on Windows. Because... Just looking at the hoops required for linux users to do most things. I am more than a little intimidated. So many things make me ask... Why is this the users task to solve? If Linux truly wants to be the ruling OS of the masses. There really needs to be an overhaul of basics. Reinstalling the same app over and over to weed out the dependencies (whatever that means)??? Should there not be an option in the myriad of terminal commands to install the necessary bits and bobs automagically. And should that not be the default option in the first place? A "this will run the app on most systems and you can opt to do things manually if you want or if the defaults don't work as expected"? Sorry it became an unintelligible rant. But still. I am very much confused about why this is the end users problem.

DaVinci Resolve has the unintended disadvantage that it was never meant for regular Desktop users but only for professional use cases like movie production. The Windows version is the only one which can be used quite effortlessly. The free version on both MacOS and Linux are not as functional and are meant to be only deployed on tested operating System (CentOS, RockyOS, Rhel)

@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH 10 ай бұрын
It would depend what that third party software does. If they include drivers, then they won't run the same as on Windows. The rest just might. You can take a looks at compatibility on the WINEHQ website. Generally speaking, if you want the classic Windows experience, then you should go for the KDE Plasma Desktop environment. If you still want to tweak it a bit, then you can do so. They advertise popular distros on their website as well, so you can just choose one. They are all similar

@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH 11 ай бұрын
On Linux you need to buy the Studio version for H.264 and H.265 support (also the x-variants) because their licenses are not included in the OS. The audio tracks not showing up can be explained by the AAC audio codec, which isn't supported in any version on Linux unfortunately. I work around that, by setting my codec to PCM in OBS instead.

@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH 4 ай бұрын
@@creatfunandunique Quality always needs to decrease if another compression is being applied. You are compressing the compressed video essentially. It's why movie studios record lossless and only encode it from the source material. If you want smaller file sizes then you either need to record in a much higher quality, so that the second compression has more data to work with, or you need to convert the mp4 file to a bigger size without any or much further compression. It's impossible otherwise as H.264 is a lossy format, meaning that you can't restore the original material from the encoded video
