The advice sure is the right way to go thank you. I managed to get as far as installing Davinci, but it chokes. Its for reasons, not to do with your advice. It is QT and Python again at work here. If I can get Davinci to start up, this will be great. Your advice at least helped me to get this far. However, using the exact steps you did with the exact Fedora etc, Davinci wont run because of the following error. " This application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt platform plugin "xcb". Available platform plugins are: linuxfb, minimal, offscreen, xcb. " Strange that I got to this unresolvable Python/QT nonsense following the same advice. Wherever Python and or QT goes, goes trouble - guaranteed. They are half baked languages.

Awesome, thank you for the detailed and good explanation. You or someone else could also setup the container and put it on a container registry, that way it would make it even easier for everyone else and future you to get it running. Maybe leave away the program itself... Or put together a docker file so that it is easier for everyone, too.

Of course, this is not a generalization, but the big channels focus on seeing things working and not making them work. I hope the audio track for the videos also dubbed into Brazilian Portuguese comes soon. Big hug and success.

The key point is to use proprietary graphics drivers, I am on Nvidia and as long as I launch davinci resolve using Nvidia graphics mode it simply works. This does seem promising. But as a Linux Noob. Resolve compability has been the thing that is keeping me on Windows. Because... Just looking at the hoops required for linux users to do most things. I am more than a little intimidated. So many things make me ask... Why is this the users task to solve? If Linux truly wants to be the ruling OS of the masses. There really needs to be an overhaul of basics. Reinstalling the same app over and over to weed out the dependencies (whatever that means)??? Should there not be an option in the myriad of terminal commands to install the necessary bits and bobs automagically. And should that not be the default option in the first place? A "this will run the app on most systems and you can opt to do things manually if you want or if the defaults don't work as expected"? Sorry it became an unintelligible rant. But still. I am very much confused about why this is the end users problem.

The post by @Afif87123, farther up in the comments section, ended up being the fix for me: Make sure you have xhost installed on the host system. Then in a terminal, on the host system, enter the following two commands: xhost +si:localuser:$USER xhost +si:localuser:root Try installing DaVinci Resolve in the container, again. It *should* work, now. Seems as though it was a permissions issue that was preventing the container system from being able to access the display server on the host system.
@DHotdog852 ай бұрын
@@callmetatan xhost **should** be installed, by default. You can check by opening up a terminal and typing 'xhost', without any additional parameters/arguments, and seeing what the response is. Assuming it **is** installed, you should see something like: "access control enabled, only authorized clients can connect SI:localuser:(your username)" If it's **not** already installed, for some reason, then install the package 'x11-xserver-utils'. xhost is part of that package. You can do that either from the Software Manager program or from the terminal window with the command: "sudo apt install x11-xserver-utils" My system uses X11. But, it **looks** like this method should work on Wayland, as well, based on what I've just looked up.
@DHotdog852 ай бұрын
@@callmetatan I posted a reply, yesterday. But, it didn't stick, for some reason. So, let's try this, again...: xhost is likely already installed, if your system uses X11 as its display server. But, if it's not, you can get it by installing the package 'x11-xserver-utils'. xhost is a part of that. You can check if it's installed or not by opening up a terminal and entering the command 'xhost' without any additional arguments/options. That should return something along the lines of "access control enabled, only authorized clients can connect". From there, just enter the commands from the previous comment. I use XFCE on my system. Which, uses X11 as its display server. Which, it appears as though Mint is still using X11 for its Cinnamon Edition. At least that seemed to be the case when I recently ran it as a Live USB session, to poke around. But, based on what I looked up, this should still work even if the host system is using Wayland instead of X11.

I got the same error Fedora 39 because of the glib2 and pango version incompatibilities: "./resolve: symbol lookup error: /lib64/libpango-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_string_free_and_steal". Got solved with "sudo cp /usr/lib64/libglib-2.0.so.0 /opt/resolve/libs/ ". But then got "./resolve: symbol lookup error: /lib64/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_task_set_static_name". Here removing the conflicting library files from /opt/resolve/libs with "sudo rm -f libglib-2.0.so* libgio-2.0.so* libgmodule-2.0.so* libgobject-2.0.so*" seemed to do the trick. Questions- if I want to move from Windows 10 to Linux and having all the third party software run on Linux. Some of those are portable software which don't need installation on windows. Will the work? Also, I would like to keep the look and feel as in Windows 10 with a "start" menu as it was in windows 7. which version of Linux will do the job without any hassle?
@MichaelNROH Жыл бұрын
It would depend what that third party software does. If they include drivers, then they won't run the same as on Windows. The rest just might. You can take a looks at compatibility on the WINEHQ website. Generally speaking, if you want the classic Windows experience, then you should go for the KDE Plasma Desktop environment. If you still want to tweak it a bit, then you can do so. They advertise popular distros on their website as well, so you can just choose one. They are all similar

how well does this work when you start mixing distros.. like debian and fedora.. does it download a full kernel, etc because they're different?

What it does is to basically download each Distro without graphical dependencies or applications. I run Fedora 40 currently. The reason on why I find the container approach much better than a native install is, because if a dependency gets updated, it will break the installation unless you manually fix it again. On Fedora 38, some of them got updated quite frequently, which meant manual fixing like every other week. There is also another advantage to Distrobox, as you can use the Linux version that Resolve itself wants to use (Rocky OS). Their version is very outdated though, which is why I went for Fedora instead

Distrobox aside have you had any issues getting Resolve to work in Linux with a Radeon card? I have 6950xt moving over from a 2080S. None of my media will import into Resolve. If it does import the clips are blank and only load an audio track on the timeline. I am using the free version and I've discovered the codecs are very limited. Unfortunately it doesn't matter how many times I try to convert it to a listed supported codec it does this exact same thing when I import the video files into the software. The specifications on gaining all the codecs on Linux state you need the Studio version and an nVidia card so I just want to verify if you'd had any issues before I drop $300.00 on the Studio version only to find out it still doesnt work with my Radeon card.
@MichaelNROH2 ай бұрын
The problem with Resolve, especially on Linux is it's focus on professionals like editors in movie studios, etc. Industy standards for web formats like the H.264 video codec or AAC for audio just won't work with the free version (the latter one not at all), so you got to treat it more professionally. I myself use the Studio Edition with a Fedora 39 distrobox container for a dependecy consistency and record my videos with H.264 (mkv) and PCM as the codec
@AlexeyRiched7 ай бұрын
how to get rid of the need to re-encode mp4 files for video to work in the Linux version of Davinci Resolve?

Don't record with AAC but with the PCM audio codec and buy the Studio edition. That's the most reliable but also expensive way to do it. There are plugins, however they also often cost money.

I've had two things happen in the past. 1. The link did not reference distrobox whatsoever (check exec=... in the resolve link in ~/.local/applications/) and I needed to export it again. 2. For some reason, the link expects the /opt/resolve directory on the host, so just create it with sudo and leave it empty. Usually this happens automatically, but not always

I was wondering if you could answer a quick question. This setup works great, but Davinci can't seem to open my lut folder. I'm wondering if it works on yours? Do you know the path to where luts are stored inside the container? I can't seem to find the path
@rjlarussa41369 ай бұрын
I managed to find it in the standard resolve path, just the hidden ".LUT" folder was missing. I created it and dropped my luts in. It seems to somehow create the default resolve luts on startup so mine are duplicated, as I have all my standard resolve luts in a subfolder. Weird behavior but it seems to work!
