Here are some more good tips. May be not mentioned in video, you didn't go over it and probably know of these. 1 and 2: What I do to make it like KDE, and both are good desktops I think and you can have them any way you like which this tip is all-out customization/switching, is in Gnome to enable the well known dash to dock extension and there's a dash to panel extension too; its already installed on manjaro. So to make it more like KDE or windows with a bar and not a dock it can be done (and makes it a lot like KDE), I then of course use the top left hot corner to expose all windows; very snappy, next: 3: I use ddterm extention as the drop down terminal, and for me I use the 'tilde' key next to the number 1. Default key is f12. If you activate all those at once its amazing. but can pick and choose if you hide taskbar or not have it, or have a large dock, etc etc etc, or just use one or the other. Play with those and I think not sure but based on your video, you and anyone can have the best of both worlds. I use nvidia so I am only on x11 but gnome 46 runs so fast as does KDE its real good; but KDE wayland gets glitchy slowdowns. So overall I like both but always been Gnome 3, I think KDE is the equal now, but I use gnome 3 with dash to panel and dock, and I switch around - but I also theme the shell and you can remove further the shell from the desktop as needed, gnome 3 is so customizable. The way I see it, when wayland has fully matured soonish the linux desktop may go even higher in the marketshare. If 4% now, maybe 6%, thats a 25-50% increase I would think, the time is ripe

If your multiple monitors match, then X11 usually works fine. However, if they don't, especially the refresh rate, you will likely run into problems.

This version of HoloISO have been archived, but there's a new version of it and it's great, it's HoloISO immutable which I consider to be even better than ChimeraOS and Bazzite. It would be cool to see your take on it, and maybe let more people know about it I used to use HoloISO up until it was abandoned, then I tried a few SteamOS like distros, like ChimeraOS which I don't like the Gnome desktop, so I tried Bazzite and it was great for games but buggy, it'd never turn off my PC, and freeze on shutting down Steam, requiring a hard shutdown which I hate it. So went back to ChimeraOS but couldn't wait to ditch it, because of the Gnome desktop which to me it's terrible to use. That's when I found out about the new version of HoloISO which I'm using right now. One of the main plus about HoloISO is that out of the three HoloISO, ChimeraOS and Bazzite, HoloISO gives the best performance on my AMD pc, plus it also have a nice desktop which I can actually do everything with only a DS4 controller (like browsing YT and writing this) Now this new HoloISO isn't completely perfect, as it will freeze when shutting down from game mode, just like Bazzite, but I found out that it will shut down properly from desktop mode I gave my other PC to my sister with ChimeraOS installed, but as she saw me using HoloISO, the first thing she said was: Can I have that installed on my PC too? lol. And shes loving it so far, as we both use our PCs hooked to flat screen TVs, her using a 47"Sony Bravia and I use a 50" Samsung smart TV which also have a cool game mode setting, and it's been great for when you just want to use your PC from the couch without having to bother M&K. The best all in one console/PC experience

Do you just leave windows installed on the same drive or do you need to delete it? Do i need to install linux on a different boot drive then what windows is currently on?
@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH 11 сағат бұрын
You can do either. The way that this works is, that commonly used distro installers automatically detect if Windows is installed and asks if you want to keep it or not. If you do, then the installer replaces the Windows Boot Manager with another one called Grub, which can both boot Windows or Linux (It asks you when starting the PC). Without manual setup, there is only one boot loader, mostly on the same drive that Windows uses. The actual data of Linux can be installed either on a dedicated drive or the same one as Windows with the Boot Loader.

I dumped Windows for Linux in early 2005. Don't regret it one bit. Plus, I created my own distro this past winter based on Debian Stable that has a built-in web content filter called F3OS, which is short for the Free Family-Friendly Operating System. When you boot up F3OS live, the username and password are "demo" (without the quotes).

If it is a bad company that deserves going bankrupt, they should run Windows. They should have one password for all users, and it should be the same as the username for all users, both of them being "username". They should do no security updates, they should put the firewall off. They should give all users administrator rights, and they should be allowed to install games.

Why must your spin always be: "When you switch from Windows..."? Leave Windows out of it, please. It never did anything to you. If Linux was that great, it would stand on its own legs and you wouldn't have to denigrate another OS to make it appear better than it already is.

I personally had a horrible time gaming on linux on my gaming pc. It is most likely the fact that i am using a RTX GPU but i was getting so low fps that games were unplayable. In the finals i got 14 fps but on Windows i got over 80. And even the few select games that ran somewhat well were stuttering every 2-3 seconds. I love linux and linux gaming on my steam deck is amazing but unfortunately i am still using windows on my PC. I've tried ubuntu, manjaro and nobara (kde & gnome) and i installed the drivers for my GPU but it was still a real pain. I don't know if there was a mistake on my part or if it just the RTX GPU but until this improves i will keep windows on my PC just so i can play any game at all.

Why can't i download linux directly to the computer? Why do i need a usb drive?
@MichaelNROH
@MichaelNROH Күн бұрын
Because you are booted into Windows. You cannot modify the boot partition of the system you are currently booted into, which is why you need a second drive with a boot partition. That could be another hard drive, CD, or USB Stick.

Sorry for asking, but if possible, can somebody help me with a command related to GPG in Fedora? I've updated Fedora 40 through the terminal and during the update I got curious about the GPG key being imported from the Fedora project, so I checked to make sure it was matching the key provided by them. After the successful update I wanted to know if as a user, I also have a GPG key, so I've read some forum posts and documentation and found out that I could use the command line gpg --list-secret-keys --keyid-format=long to list them. I expected this command to simply list the gpg key or keys via terminal, but instead, it created a folder named .gnugpg at /home/user with items including a public-keys folder and a trustdb.gpg. My questions is: What should I do with this folder? Is it safe to keep that on my /home directory? Should I delete it, or would it cause problems? (I didn't do anything else other than using this command)

Resolve's individual "programs" are being built differently. The Editing mode usually reads both user and system fonts, while Fusion only reads system fonts by default. I talked about this at the end of this video: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/j37Xm4WeZtuYlaM

MP4 as in the format is not the problem. The free version of DaVinci Resolve on Linux does not support H.264 (AVC) or H.265 (HEVC). That only works in the Studio Edition due to licensing costs, which are usually covered by the Operating Systems. The newer AV1 codec works flawless, and if that is not an option, I would recommend recording with a different video codec

Hmm .. Wayland is not exactly for everyone. A couple of days ago, I tried Fedora with KDE. And it was buggy as all heck. As far as the internet rabbit hole took me, I noticed a pattern where Wayland with KDE is very buggy most times regardless of the distro. I have a Nvidia card and at first chucked it up to that- Nvidia drivers being a mess, but it seems that other people using Intel Arc or AMD had the same issue - flickering windows and UI elements. Sooo ... At the moment, I would not recommend KDE with Wayland, simply due to the fact that I had no such issues on GNOME.

Do you have a way of dealing with gtk4 apps like bottles or lutris looking out of place on KDE Plasma or do you just not care? The lack of cohesion between GUI toolkits and proprietary software/drivers are the only things holding me back from using Linux exclusively.

I don't mind it. There are dedicated GTK-Themes which sometimes come in the variant of your QT one, but the headerbar and overall layout is pretty much unchangeable
