very interesting. I am a builder in New Zealand, and I love watching different building styles and methods from around the world, just to see how different we build. This is the first time I have ever seen anyone do a floor like this, and it really has me interested in finding out more. Practical, beautiful, sustainable, and cheap! Thank you very much for showing it. I have just subscribed.

Awesome work! I'm planning to do an earthen floor with about 40-50% biochar mixed in for humidity regulation. Do you guys have a good solution for a final finish for such a floor? The linseed oil would inhibit the breathability too much I reckon.

Why aren't you using 1/10 cement? On all the information I have read it increases the durability and helps keep the moisture from building up after you skim the outside and inside?

I think your family and your videos are so awesome! I look forward to your weekly peek. Please do a more detail specific cob mixing video. I live in the high desert like you, how much sifting do I really need to do with this gravely sand? What is this clay you mix in? Did I miss an earlier video? How fine must it be? Forgive me for so many questions! Love ya!

According to Earthbag Building by Kaki Hunter and Donald Kiffmeyer: "Among a plethora of guidelines, rules, laws, ordinances and amendments, no specific standards exist for the use or application of alternative materials and methods. Wood framing, concrete, and steel are comprehensively covered in agonizing detail, yet there is no mention of [...] forms of building, like earthen arches, domes, vaults, or even common post and beam construction." They go on to site Section 104.2.8, which basically says that in this situation a building official may come in and approve the building at his/her discretion, as there is no straight up rules to follow. Given that, I'm with Kari on this. Don't ask, don't tell lol.

OK , question on the linseed oil. I've seen some earthen floor installs that used Thompsons water seal. Was your use of the linseed oil vs Thompsons water seal based on price or chemical concerns or....? They both provide the same hardening factors to the earthen floors with the exception that Thompsons doesn't need to have the wax layer added. Any insight would be appreciated
@mylittlehomestead

+Twomidgetsonahorse hmmmm, that is interesting that Thompsons Water Seal hardens the floor. We have only ever used linseed oil. We may have to try that one out. Thanks for your comments :)

Hello! I have applied first coat of linseed oil on my clay/sand floor. It has been 3 weeks now and the floor still doesn't look like it is completely dry. Some parts are lighter than others. How would I know that it is time for the next layer? When I touch it it is dry and not sticky. Is it enough or should I wait when it becomes entirely lighter color? Please give me an advise. Thanks a lot!!!
@mylittlehomestead
@mylittlehomestead 7 жыл бұрын
Our application uses Linseed oil with several coats; as many as 3-5. We don't wait for the coats to dry completely before reapplication. The coats should begin to blend. Your moisture and humidity will affect dry times. I hope that helps.
