HOLY CRAP! I BELIEVE YOU WIRED IT BACKWARDS at the switch. I believe the smooth wire is your HOT wire and needs to be the one under the two screws. The NEUTRAL-rigid textured one -does not need to be cut. It just lays through the switch. Am I right?!

I don't understand why you cut the wire inside the base if you were going to cut the wire completely at the switch. Just remove excess length at that point.

Well thank you Sir, I put a switch on my 24 inch shop light that was supposed to be mounted under a cabinet or on a ceiling and wired into the house wiring. I couldn't find a small one for my seed starting shelf, that would just plug in. I was forced into it, if truth be told, everything was getting very leggy and flopping over, and they hadn't even started their true leaves yet. So thank you very much.

Black tape.....never use it to keep wires together...the glue breaks down. Besides the pulling on the wire will loosen them over time and they will pull out. They should of been left uncut and at best soldered and heat shrinked. I hope you rewired it.

Should the switch be connected to the live wire or is it ok for it to be placed on either of the two wires? I did not see you testing for the live\hot wire in the video.
@DIYHGP
@DIYHGP 7 жыл бұрын
Check the insulation on the cord wires closely and you will find either a textured bead or a thin colored line running along one wire, this is the neutral. The plain wire is the hot. If the cord isn't marked with a bead then the strands of wire will be different colors. In these cases the silver wire is the neutral and the brass colored wire is the hot. The plug on the lamp cord holds another clue to polarity with the wide prong being the neutral and the narrow one the hot.
@UjwalAnurag
@UjwalAnurag 7 жыл бұрын
DIY Home & Garden Projects Appreciate the reply but according to my understanding, the polarity can be changed by simply plugging into the socket the other way and then the switch would actually be on the neutral. Wouldn't it? I am new to this and don't mean to bother you with technicalities of installing a switch.
@DIYHGP
@DIYHGP 7 жыл бұрын
If your plug has prongs the same size, you can flip it over and plug in either way, them the wiring wont matter.
@UjwalAnurag
@UjwalAnurag 7 жыл бұрын
DIY Home & Garden Projects well, yes the prongs are of the same size and hence the confusion. I've seen videos where the switch is connected to live wire to break and release the current. However, when a plug is involved, it simply can be plugged in any other way. The switch could shift from being on the live wire in on position and then the other in another position. This could be an electrical hazard.

I loved the videos, helpful but the switch instructions indicated one side was hot and one side neutral. So which of the wires did you attach as your in wire? The grooved side or the smooth side?

Why did you cut into the wire at the bottom of the lamp? Is there a reason you don't use a wire cutter? As others have stated, using electrical tape vs. soldering is dangerous.

Is there a way of removing a switch from a lamp? I purchased a tall floor lamp and the switch is very bulky and in such an awkward position, I'm unable to tack the wiring to the skirting, would be much easier for me to just use the socket switch..

I am going to replace a wheel toggle that broke off the screw . The hot wire is the only side cut, so I think I can just strip those ends back a little and put them on the screws for this new switch since this switch is bigger I should be able to expose enough wire. Can this be used on a polarized plug?

Omgoodness. 1. You did not need to go into the lamp and cut the cord short in it if you did Step 2 and spliced both lines. Regardless of this you don't use wire nuts on the bottom like that. When you have excess cord you pull it all the way up through the lamp the light socket above and rewire it there. 2. You do not know what your doing. You don't splice the other wire. You only splice one. The electrical tape is a fire hazard. If you have to move the switch then for fire safety you buy a new cord.

I can't find switches that have screws for the wire, just a pin that's supposed to pierce the wire. They are all too small to get the wire in the switch and close it up. This would have been useful if you told exactly how to find the switch you're using. Lowes had nothing like that.
