Install/Review: 22+ GR86 BRZ | AlphaRex LED Trunk Lightbar LUXX-Series

2/17/24 UPDATE: TRUNK BUTTON FIXED! Video below of what I did (CHECK THIS BEFORE INSTALLING LIGHTBAR on your car) kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2i9mKaNf7uVbNU Root Cause of Trunk button issue? The AlphaRex trunk button is physically pushing up against the OEM trunk button. This may be due to how you trim the plastic support 3/19/24 Update: (AFTER fixing trunk button issue, I ran into issue where the trunk button got stuck. Would not budge at all) Im guessing debris can get into the button and cause the button to get stuck? Lubricate Trunk button piece/opening: While you have the Lightbar apart, I recommend, removing the trunk button, and lubricate it with some sort of grease (white lithium grease) or (di-electric grease) which is what I used. But I have white lithium grease in case it gets stuck again, but so far the di-electric grease is holding up well 2/17/24 UPDATE from AlphaRex "We already rework all the current stock we had in house , and we will be updating the next batch" 2/7/24 UPDATE: Response from AlphaRex (Tech Support) regarding Trunk Button "Typically when the trunk button does not engage it is because it is not aligned with the OEM component that the light bar sits on." When I get a chance, I will take the Lightbar apart to take a closer/deeper look and see if I can get it to work, but my advice to you is to test the button and take time to align the trunk button opening before putting back together Total of GR86 owners as of 2/3/24, confirmed LED Lightbar Trunk button no longer works: (4) Total of GR86 owners as of 2/17/24 WITH WORKING LED Lightbar: (1) 1/30/24 UPDATE: GR86/BRZ owners. If you are using this product, please report below if you have the same issue with Trunk button not working. So far, there are 3 owners including me, where the trunk button is NOT working. I will update this pinned comment as updates come

Awesome! Just keep in mind, I still havent gotten the physical trunk button to work along with the other GR86 owners 🥲 Other than that, I do love the way it looks! Good luck 🤘

Hmmm I just put mine on like this - Without stripping the wires from the taillight harness but it won’t light…

Great video! Is there any way to wire it so that it can function as both a parking light and a brake light? That's what's holding me up on buying this, I know the ebay trunk light can do it but this one looks better

@sanda7662 That would be a question for AlphaRex, but from what Ive seen, the lightbar only has 1 power/Ground wire to simply turn the lightbar on/off. Yea, the ebay trunk light didnt seem as bright/vibrant as the AlphaRex one, but I do wish AlphaRex offered a version without the trunk button, or even relocate the trunk button to the bottom

AlphaRex includes instructions online that I followed, however if you are not comfortable you can ask local shops if that is something they are able to do. I would recommend watching Kevin Vo's install video on the lightbar. If it looks too complicated send that video to any local shops to see if they would install for you

Far too much hacking of the OEM fittings for my liking. I mean can it all be put back to stock for when selling the car? After all that effort and to not have the trunk button work - definite no from me.

Yea, if retaining the trunk button is a top priority, I get it. For me, it wasnt a deal breaker since I can still open the trunk with 1) remote and 2) cabin button. But the lightbar itself performs great, so it really depends how much you want the look of the lightbar and what youre willing to sacrifice to have it. AlphaRex (AR) support told me the button wasnt aligned correctly, but I havent been too concerned to take apart and check again. But I still find it odd, that 3 other GR86 owners have also reported, their trunk button no longer functions after installing their AR lightbar as well. As far as going back to stock, the oem trim piece should snap back in and re-use oem screws, its just the support wont be as strong since we modified the oem plastic support
