Hey Paul. Small sidenote: There is an X thermostat that directly connects to the boiler without the Bridge using the wires of the original thermostat (like the Honeywell shown in the video). I have this system in my house. (Yes, the X is available where I live and I can send pictures if you want.) I don't know if this will be available in the UK as I'm from Belgium ;-) PS: Nice video as always! ;-)

The Tado design looks similar to the Aqara E1 (I have 20 E1s) in that they (E1s) have a fundamental design flaw. When the radiator gets really hot it bakes the white plastic splines that attach to the valve and go brittle and break off. Consequently As the E1 actuator controls the valve it ends up lifting the E1 till it tilts at 30+ degrees and effectively no longer works. I have had 3-4 units do this. To be fair Aqara have replaced them at no charge but refuse to acknowledge this is a problem that needs a redesign.

All I can say is I love my tado product, and my partner was always going on about the cost of heating, so the boiler broke last December, so I looked into all of the products on the market and tado always seem to have good reviews so we invested in it with in 3 months our energy company revised our bills and the gas came down which really does mean the system as a whole works so having the thermostat and rad controllers do save you money of course she is happy

Great video! Tado saved 1/6 on the bill and kept the kid's room separately heated during the winter nights. My only 2 major gripes about Tado are: first the lack of support for opentherm error codes, before I installed Tado I could see my errors on the home thermostat display when an error occurred. Now I have to keep an eye on the blinking light on the heater if any error occurs. The second is being unable to easily turn on all heaters in every room on full power regardless of the temperature. Mainly for when the maintenance guy needs to test the heating system, which can be tricky during summer. If the rooms are near 25 degrees (the max of to) the heater doesn't want to go on full power to heat the rooms. The only workaround is to adjust the temperature offset setting of the thermostats to let the system think it is below 25 degrees. Basically luxury problems I didn't know I missed from my old thermostat.

I think I'd use automations in Home Assistant, or whatever hub you may want to use, instead of paying. Sure, it takes a slight faff to write an automation, but it would save the money. That's the advantage of Matter connected devices that truly follow the protocol. Not like nest thermostats that seem to claim to be matter but only work properly with the g's ecosystem..... Great when members of the alliance abuse the protocol and create the issues it was designed to solve.

It's what I did. Bought the sonoff ZigBee valves at £22/each, replaced my 2 zone wall thermostats with sonoff nspanels & hooked the relays to the boiler. I have local control if WiFi home assistant etc fails as I can just press the manual buttons with fallback to relay. I also use one as a 30 minute boost with a max temp override so non techies in the house can still boost it (e.g. older house sitters.)

We're on gas/forced air over here, so no radiators. This looks like a great product for anyone who's got radiators (which I think is most of the UK) and having Matter over Thread makes it even better. Tado has really done this one up properly with a Matter boarder router built right into the boiler controller and actually advertising all of the capabilities to Matter. I do wish other OEMs would do that. Making it OpenTherm compatible is brilliant as well. I'm also glad to see that installation and, equally important, recognition by Matter (which seems to be a bugaboo in some other Matter devices.) Thanks, as usual, for mentioning the caveats. I have had a full EVO Home setup from Honeywell for many years and I found that it also helped to keep the house warmer as each room now reached it’s proper temperature rather than that of the hallway, where some rooms were warm and others cold. It worked very well with my boiler and saved around a third off the yearly use. I now have an Air Source Heat Pump and the science behind this seems to be heating the whole home to an equal temperature, so I now have them set more generally but it does mean the rooms heat up to the desired temperatures. One important point regarding the boiler connection. If you install it with opentherm or EMS it will modulate the power output of the boiler to what it thinks is required. Condensing boilers are more efficient that way. And you prevent scrnarios where the boiler kicks in but all thermostats are shut.

I'd moved out of my parents house who have always had nest. I can safely say i will NEVER switch to nest! tado does so many neat things. Like for example it somehow KNOWS there is a window open; it uses geomapping to tell when you're close to your house or leaving, The one gripe many people had is that its not possible to set it over 25 but people fail to realise that you shouldn't even need to be putting it higher than that. If you're having to wack your heat up that high your thermostats aren't in the right places and the ONE place you do have one is too cold for it to get an average temp of the home...rather that the temp of that ONE room

The trouble with all these are that unless you have some idea what you are doing, you are likely going to send your boiler into an anti cycling loop. I use wiser (cheaper and functionally the same). Paul with the hike in fuel prices last year I looked to see how I could use Homeassistant to save me money on my heating. I have a Hive Heating controller a modern boiler but without weather compensation, and Aqara thermostatic valves on my radiators. My research led me to undertand that the boiler efficiency was determined by the return water flow temperature to the boiler and that needed to be below 54 deg C before you start getting any efficiency gains from the condensing part of the boiler. Without condensing the efficiency is 88% and the lower the return temperature the higher the efficiency. My radiators only reduced the flow temperature by 10 deg so when I was running the system at 65 deg (the temperature recommended by the installer) I was getting poor efficiency from my new boiler. Long story short I was able to use Homeassistant to measure the flow and return temperatures and calculate the boiler efficency at different temperature settings. This enabled me to increase the efficency by 5% giving me a 5% reduction in my gas heating billl about £40 a year. A dissapointing about of work to save less than the cost of one smart radiator valve.
@davideyres955
@davideyres955 Ай бұрын
If you have a combi boiler then you can do the temperature lower provided you get the house to the temperature you want. But if you are heating up a water tank you need to meet the water temp in the boiler higher to ensure legionella is destroyed. Under 65 deg it takes longer to kill the bacteria so you need the water heating on more often/longer.
@MAMDAVEM
@MAMDAVEM Ай бұрын
This is correct, so to deal with this I installed a T-smart immersion heater and programmed it once a week to do a legionella run taking the stored water up from 50 degrees to 65 for an hour.

Couple of things to consider when looking at TRVs. If you turn off a rad (which is what these do) then the room in question well get cold. If you don’t close the door then you’ll get a draft and you’ll feel colder. If you cut down the number of radiators exchanging heat then your boiler will cycle more. Lots of cycling (switching on and off) doesn’t do boilers much good so you could be making the gas engineers come sooner. I’m not sure how smart these things are n it comes to non combi boilers. When you have a hot water tank you need the boiler temperature set to 65. Your boiler is then not condensing. Your boiler temperature for heating is dependent on the load and you want the return temperature to be below 55 to get condensing. The lower the return temperature the more efficient it is. So if it’s really smart it will turn the boiler down when heat only is needed but if the hot water tank calls for heat then ramp it up. You would then probably want as many radiators on as possible to reduce the return temperature. Assuming you tank is before your radiator circuit.
@Felix-st2ue
@Felix-st2ue Ай бұрын
So what they do on opentherm is to request a certain percentage of power output from the boiler. As to the 60° requirement, that's depending on your plumbing. If the hot water and the heating circuit are split by a valve that is controlled by the boiler you can run them at different temperatures.
@john_hind
@john_hind Ай бұрын
That is another good reason to have the boiler control box as well as the radiator valves. Even if it only switches the boiler on and off using the thermostat input and does not have opentherm, a smart controller can optimize boiler cycling. This is the big potential benefit of smart valves over dumb TRVs which inevitably obstruct any attempt to balance the radiators. How well various makes do this is an open question though and I've seen very little testing of this.

This is the comment I was looking for 👍🏻 we have a tank/boiler system, is what your saying is don’t get these if you have tank/boiler system??
@john_hind
@john_hind Ай бұрын
@@kevinkvs9746 I do not think this is right. If your boiler does not have Opentherm, the boiler controller replaces the switch in the heating thermostat. If the boiler still supplies hot water when you turn the thermostat right down so the heating never comes on, or during summer when the temperature outside is higher than the set temperature, then you should still be good. The comment in the OP relates equally to mechanical TRVs and to 'smart' radiator valves without a boiler controller. These could shut off all the radiators and the boiler would still be trying to heat the water in the radiator loop. With a boiler controller, the smart system can turn the boiler CH function off when all the radiators are off. With a TRV system, or a 'smart' system without boiler control you generally have to bodge it by having the radiators in the room containing the thermostat permanently on which obviously wastes fuel and means the system will be unable to heat any other room if the room controlled by the thermostat is already up to heat.

I've got the original Tado system and well, it's ok but not great. The temperature sensors are too close to the radiators so getting the room to the temperature you want can be a bit of a battle. It would be so much better if the thermostats talked to a paired remote sensor that could be placed where you actually sit in each room. And that battery replacement process...! This X version seems interesting. It's a pity that it's not compatible with my system though. I can't see myself shelling out another £1000 or so to replace everything.

You can get additional thermostats that you can place anywhere in the room on batteries which will will achieve what you want, but that is even more expense of course. Other main advantage of the older Tado systems like we have vs the new one is, no monthly subscriptions neccesary.

I hand coded something similar in home assistant (python & includes adjustment for weather) be interesting to ask Tado why you need a thermostat in the hall - why does the boiler control not simply have each rad thermostat tell it if it needs heat? That's what my home brew effectively does and the results where a conservative 40% gas saving (only had comparable stats towards the end of winter / early spring so probably did better over winter...incidentally there is a rad valve on the market that can be configured to explicitly ask for heat - sadly in my experience it wasn't reliable (ie it would ask for heat even though it had shut the radiator down).

If I already have a Google thermostat and boiler connection, then, will I need the hub and thermostat from Tado? Could I just wire them into the devices on the Google system? Orrr, as I’m on a version 1 Google thermostat should I just replace with Tado, or, upgrade to the recently announced version 2 Google thermostat when it is released? Edit: hmm, just realised, it’s a matter thread / whatever thing isn’t it. Hmm. So, it would be a switch thing I guess…unless I can get just as rich an experience using the valves with the V2 Google thermostat maybe? 🤔

I've got the existing Tado setup at the moment and a lot of devices, TRV, wireless thermostats to a combi boiler. Been looking at these and thinking do I switch? I've got WAN failover configured on my firewall for tado, only to a very cheap 4G connection. I've got Alexa and Apple TV 4k, so can have thread/matter. I do need to look at Homekit, just need to spin up a VM on the server for it.

I have the original Tado and TRVs on most radiators. The biggest failing is they don't have a remote temp sensor per TRV. The temp sensors in the valves are rubbish The original TRV did Geo sensing and open window sensing, subscription free. Also the temp sensor in the hall I just set very low, but the TRVs can all still turn the heating on and off I think you'd need a castle to save £340

How are people getting round the age old recommendation to have one radiator in the house that’s just open with no TRV? In our house the radiator with no TRV is a massive one in the hallway. So with a system like this I could never just heat up ‘one room’ without the hallway radiator also having to be heated up. Or am I missing something?

My current Nest thermostat is in a hallway with a radiator - and the heating in the whole house only comes on if that hallway is cold enough. I think if an individual radiator could call for the boiler to turn on, it might actually end up costing me more money!
@Eric76
@Eric76 22 күн бұрын
That's not how it works. You are using less gas from the boiler to heat every single radiator. In any event if you wanted Nest to do the same, they request you buy another Nest thermostat in another room to achieve the same. A far more expensive way of achieving a zoned heating system for multiple radiators within a dwelling.

Great video Paul, I have questions though ... Whilst I get the idea of the tado smart valves I don't see the purpose of the "room stat"?. I currently have Honeywell EvoHome system self installed & it's worked flawlessly for over 5 years. I can heat just 1 room or the entire house if needed. If the tado's can do single room (or zone) operation why the need for the room stat? Does it not use the temp sensor on each room valve to control temps? or am I missing something? Looks a great system & i love the chance to buy new tech but struggling to get my head around this setup. Any info greatly appreciated.

The TadoX radiator valves communicate with the "room stat" and not the wireless receiver. IIRC Evohome radiator valves talk to the Evohome controller which then talks to the wireless boiler controller.

Paul, have I understood this correctly: the Tado X platform uses Matter, and Aqara have now unlocked the M3 Hub to allow all different manufacturers into the Aqara ecosystem via matter... So you could link a Tado X wireless thermostat with Aqara TRVs that could call the Tado to turn the boiler on? This way you could also use temperature sensors that didn't have an unwanted screen and unnecessarily high price tag? 🤔 Trying to figure out if to buy Aqara now or wait for more Matter devices, UK matter boiler thermostat, Black Friday, etc

Out of interest does the hub in the cupboard call for the heat and overrides main thermostat? I have a nest gen3 and like it, but could I buy the stats and run them in conjunction with the Nest or will I have to replace the whole system if I want the stats to call for heat. So in theory have the nest hub connected though the tado hub then to the boiler?
