In this video I install the top plate on the walls of the workshop. This is done by screwing 2x4's on top of the wall. Next I install the trusses on the H1 and H2.5 clips.

When setting trusses without a birds mouth as you did here, set the overhang and install both end trusses first. Now you can run a mason's string across the ends (facia board) of the two to set the same overhang for the rest of the trusses. Saves a bunch of time AND aggravation form measuring every one.

Love the videos, keep on rolling my friend. BTW very cool to have the drone in hover mode filming some excellent shots. I'm sorry I groaned when you used the H* clips without birdsmouths or wedges to connect the trusses to the top plate. These wind ties are only strong against vertical forces to keep the roof from lifting off in a high wind. They are weak against forces that would bend them outward, like the snow load pushing down on the roof trying to scissor open the trusses. Birdsmouth cutouts also help you make sure your truss is centered, since the top plate fits right into the pre-measured corner. Please cut some blocking to attach to the sides of the trusses and into the top plate so in 10 years your roof won't be mushroomed out with bent H* clips. BTW your trick with the scraps for the end truss is also how you raise a wall and keep the bottom from sliding off the floor. Good luck and god bless.

one point if i may had you let the additional top plate run over you then put a 4x2 in edge and form an over hang for your final truss ,that way get over hang all around and could use your metal fixings,also a little concerned re the amount of screw as you have on those peices of ply ,usually a web is made of ply thinner than what you used {but agree use what you have} and cover and is screwd or nailed to a pattern,also woud not have fixed the spacers at the ridge line ,though you are doing OK ,amazing what a plank and additional timber fixed to the studs do allows you to walk along easly you can nail a 3x2 or 3x1 along as you go to hold the truss ,and a temporary brace to hold it prior to the sheeting you use in the usa
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 4 жыл бұрын
The extra length of 2x4 on the ladder would have been nice. But this worked in the end. So far the trusses have held 16" of snow without issues. That was a lot of snow! The extra section of plywood on the end was annoying. I did not consider that until it was too late. Thanks for the comments!

The rain is going to shed into your home so it might help if you make sure that you have good drainage with gravel so that your house foundation doesn't fail. Teco nails for your hardware and 16d vyinle coated for your framing will hold better and be legal.
@LandtoHouse

With that length of span, using 2X4 trusses, I feel like your roof will have quite a bit of bounce to it. If you are using metal roofing this is probably not too big of a deal but with asphalt shingles, it might be too heavy without some ties from top plate to top plate.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 7 жыл бұрын
+kuhrd my dad and I were both on the roof this past week and it had only a little bounce. I will be using metal for the roof so not quite as heavy. I still might use some ties inside just to hang some stuff on and give more support.

When you want to install that first truss, instead of using a short 2 x (4 to hold it vertical) attached to the top plate, use longer pieces of studs and attach them to existing studs AND to the top plate, to have the truss vertical. And, get a taller ladder. Installing lower sheathing plywood would make all the structure much more secure, before you start upwards to install trusses. Also, scaffolding would make this part of the installation three to five times faster. Use three and a half inch screws to attach upper plates. A big wind would just rip out the ones you installed. Sixteen penny nails would have been faster.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the tips! I especially agree with the scaffolding. The ladder that I was using was just a little too short. We have had a few good winds over the past 2 years and so far no issues with the build.

It is tough working by yourself < I know because that's what I do , but a couple of things noticed . First your clips we be in the way of your siding , second never have I seen trusses mounted without a birds mouth or top plate cut third and foremost why screws , they have no shear strength to them are twice as expensive as nails and very time consuming . hope you did'nt use them for your framing . You need a framing nail gun . I did like your little jig setup though I have used them myself . Hopefully you don't get much snowfall , because those 2x4 trusses will not hold it Good luck on the build and GOD bless

Why didn’t to install the top plate before you stood the wall? I see that you placed a stud at the joint of two short walls. That is to say you’ve wasted a stud. It’s such a short run wall that you could have built it in one length and top plated it then stood it. I’m 75 and assure you that I could have stood that wall by myself.

People say it's because of the sheer strength. Harder to ripout nails.
@graemej2599
@graemej2599 5 жыл бұрын
Pulling out nails is tensile strength. Cutting nails in half, for example, is Shear Stress. Screws are usually made of hardened steel, therefore they have higher tensile strength but are more brittle than common steel. Being 'Brittle' usually indicates a reduced Shear Stress strength. The forces involved in spanning a distance by roof trusses involves 'Shear Stresses' on the fasteners, not so much Tensile Stress. Therefore nails would be preferred instead of screws for a stronger finished job.
@hallhouse5098
@hallhouse5098 5 жыл бұрын
Graeme J2 Yeah man if you can get your hands on a pneumatic nail gun and compressor you got it made in the shade. You can find good deals on used ones but can’t go wrong with new stuff. One thing I would have done differently since the span on those trusses is pretty decent for how they’re constructed for more ceiling clearance is I would have filled the entire lower run part of the truss all the way to the rise pieces like a big plywood triangle. Glued down with a good urethane construction adhesive and nailed down (or screwed) as the glue will be stronger than the fasteners once it dries. The more surface area your plywood gussets cover the stronger your trusses will be for that span. I’m sure some will tell you those trusses are way wrong for that span but with the best reinforcement i’d say they’d be fine although if you run plywood sheeting and shingles that’s gonna be pretty heavy If you use purlin boards 2’ on center and steel sheeting you’ll have much, much less weight to consider. Either way, as mentioned it is refereshjng to see a do it yourself video with a polite host that’s not cussing like a dock worker. Nice job fella.

+Holleran Properties ha ha your comment is full of positivity and uplifting advice. After a year there is no issues in sight with how close the building is to the house. I have a rain catchment system planned that will reduce the spillover of rainwater significantly.... as for my donkey I might overfeed it a little bit but he is ok with repairs. :)

+James LaCombe my goal is to have some gutters that have a lever to fold down in the winter.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. Learning as I go. There will be a gutter system in the future that will take most of the water away from the house and to storage tanks for garden watering.

If anyone sees this, Do not build your trusses like this. You have to remember your children inherit what you leave behind; this will not be safe in the long run....

I see plenty of shed roofs built this way and they last many, many years. If someone wants to come in and criticize, make it constructive instead of spewing this sage advice with little substance. The trusses look good for this purpose.

YOu don't need a ladder to put the truss in place, use a long 2x4 to fit it into place.

I have seen some people do that. I guess I was just more comfortable with the ladder.

When I looked into the H clip it said no cut was required. SO far it has worked well. No issues even in a 16" snow.
