Q:What is having a more powerful HO ALT useful for?
A: They're great for big sound systems or any power hungry installation that demands a lot of current! They will keep your batteries topped off much better than a lower amp unit, especially during extreme use where more amps are needed to replenish whatever battery bank you have!!!
FAILED Alternator Symptoms:
Failed amperage bench test (at local shop)
Constant dead batteries or low voltage light
Not keeping batteries charged up (maintained)
Hard time starting engine (caused by dead batts)
No power steering or brake assist
Strange noise or loud noises while spinning

Watch you off and on for years. This video has convinced me to subscribe, nice to see that you understand the purpose of the alternator and batteries any charging perspective. It's funny I work for AutoZone, nothing is more tiring than trying to explain to a customer very bad battery will kill an alternator and a bad alternator will kill a battery. Alternators are not meant to charge your battery they are meant to maintain a full charge.

I wrench for a living, and see this salt stuff more than I like. A few tips Jerms! 1st, you live in salt central, and what your seeing is corrosion. A product called fluid film, and a good pressure washing will remove and prevent it in the future. Needs to be applied annually to continue to protect. When working on salted vehicles, always use penetrant on all exposed threads before turning wrenches, to alleviate the rust stiction, and prevent thread damage. Use channel locks to hold the wire end when drilling, the bit sometimes catches the edge and could rip the connector off or cause injury. Have you clamped the alt at full output yet? I'm curious what a 320a small case is capable of! Idle current seemed decent!

Back in the 90's I roasted a Alt playing jams on a old school equalizer booster. Kept doing it with the car off, crank it with just enough power to start it. Of course cars didn't have a overload switch to prevent burnout back then, After a few times of doing this it roasted both bat and alt. I added water to battery and it just boiled. Eventually fried the electrical system After a second time of this 🙄 I didn't learn anything the first time just thought the parts needed to come out as the car had 200,000 miles. Fried it just a few hundred miles After changing it out. Point is I understand charging the battery with a external source, may need to do this with vehicles in general as most the time the alt is only powering what is on. Short cranking times now make the alt sensors not want to charge battery. Not sure how many vehicles have that. This video reminded me to look into a float charger 👍. Alternator gauge in my vehicle never stays in same place, but it's been tested. Figure it's probably all the things that automatic come on at the first start of car, head lamps and head lights. Anyway excellent video.

Fumes from non sealed batteries increase the amount of galvanic corrosion. Galvanic corrosion is a natural layer that forms on aluminum to protect the metal underneath. It forms when water , air, and aluminum is mixed it creates aluminum oxide. The white powder you see. You can remove it but it will come back unless you polish or paint.

Wish my car as as simple/easy as this one seems to be! I called 4 places about making a custom high-output alternator, Ohio Alternator and all. Everyone declined me saying Sorry - Not possible. Since the alternator is smaller than generic ones. 100A stock. Singer ended up making one for me, which was only possible by CNC machining the stock endbells out, making them a little thinner, and shoved in a larger, hairpin style alternator with 6-phases. End result ended up being just about 200A. The largest he could fit inside that stock case with a larger bell on the rectifier side. Bypassed the external regulator system ( Car would force into 12.8V Eco Mode ) So now its 14.7V solid. Works great! But yeah, 200A is the dead max. Install location is buttom of the engine near the firewall. Lift the car. Go through the tire..sucked.

That depends on your average power consumption. As long as you don't crank it up to a very high volume all the time you won't run down your batteries. For instance: a sub system that consumes 1000w at 130db will only consume 125w at 121db, witch is still a healthy volume. Your batteries store about 2000wh of energy while your alternator spits out about 900w after a certian engine rpm (at idle it will be significantly less). It all depends on the size of your system, how loud you play and for how long at a time.

Just oxidation. If it’s really stuck on you can take a wire wheel to it and shine it up. Lubrication will prevent it from doing that. Wiping surfaces with a light coat of WD-40 (spray on rag then wipe don’t spray directly on surfaces because it’ll get way to oily and pick up grime) will help out with keeping it shiny.

The harbor freight step drills are decent but will burn quite easy on steel. I just drilled out a grade 5 washer with one and it got pretty hot and dulled. Putting a hard load on an alternator will wear it out quicker. A charger monitors the battery as it charges and knows when to quit. A 10 to 15A charger is good to use with a final 2A maintain.

So quick story about alternators and dead batteries. I had a 2005 Ford Five Hundred and purchased a Mechman 240a alternator. I had a group 34 under the hood and a group 31 AGM in the trunk. Ran an Orion XTR 4000.1 @ 1 ohm and an Alpine 50x4 on the doors. Mechman lasted about 4 months then died. I got it pulled out and sent back. They fixed it quick and I got back and installed. Withing 3 months it died again. Again, I got it pulled out and shipped back in. At this point I was bashing Mechman every chance I got. These alternators were pure garbage. Mechman on the phone asked me some questions because he couldn't figure out why the rotor kept burning out of them. They sent it back and I sold it. I bought a CES 250a self exciting alt and it worked great for the 3-4 months I had it in but then I traded the car and pulled everything out of it. Let me preface this with everything hooked up and car off my front battery was reading 12.6v and the rear around the same. Once I pulled the alt and all the gear out including the group 31 I went to start the car and it was stone dead..I mean 0, nothing, nada. Come to find out that from group 34 was stone stone dead. That poor Mechman was running at 100% trying to charge a battery that wouldn't take a charge. The fact that the damn thing lasted as long as it did actually impressed me. I open apologized on Facebook pages that I talked trash about them on. Long story short check your batteries! :-)

I like to use the 3 step bit set. Don't need to have a bunch of drill bits taken up space in the tool box. Also that brand of belt you got is a really good one. 👍😎🤘

Just worked on my car, and I hear ya about the torture of 1/16th of a turn at a time ratcheting... I'm Seriously going to get a power ratchet after seeing a guy use one recently.. Quick, and totally Effortless.. Well worth the expense I think..

How nice to have the alternator on top. I have an 09 maxima. It's on the bottom passenger side front. Can't even see it. I just bought a J's alternator. My voltage would drop to 13.1. I hope Js is good. $516 for 390 amp. No one else makes them for my car. Not the ones you hear about all the time. I tried Iraggi also. No go

Hey buddy, you can use a salt and vinegar solution in a spray bottle to get rid of all those deposits on the engine. Make sure to cover the electronic connectors and any exposed electronics.

its good that they placed the alternator next to the intake manifold. my car has the alternator next to the headers which generates more heat and make my alternator run inefficient

Yes that's bad haha. Its corrosion. Will start pitting soon. Get some cpc type 3 in the green can and spray all that down. Safe for electrical stuff. Used it on aircraft in the Navy

Ok so a couple of tips. First off a wire brush does better with cleaning threads. Also that white crud is actually aluminum corroding from salt and moisture. Second harbor freight has an 18" RATCHETING breaker bar so you can stand straight and save your back. It's done wonders for me. Best $20 ever

That white powder stuff is just standard corrosion on aluminum parts you can wipe it off no problem but it will come back unless the part is painted or powder coated or oiled
