Very helpful video! I had to install a fiber optic rear on my customer sight & realized the factory Glock rear sight tool will NOT install these since they are so long... so I took a vise, some wood blocks, paper tape, & a wooden dowel & basically did what you did in the vid. The tape trick is awesome...I put it on the blocks to hold in place, & protect the finish & on the tip of the wooden dowel. I used a brass hammer to tap the rear, filed it with a flat metal file & voila! Great vid thanks!

I actually called Trijicon about this once, and like Dave, they said it's fine to use a punch as long as you keep the punch down on the dovetail, where it's supposed to be, rather than higher up on the sight, where you'll also have a harder time because the force isn't parallel to the slot. The vials themselves are fixed with a small silicone jacket which gives them a bit of high-frequency shock isolation anyway. They are quite durable. Hope it helps!

Fantastic video, I really appreciate that. Can you explain why you DON'T use a sight pusher tool and instead go with the hammer and punch? I was thinking of getting a sight pusher because that would allow me to sight the weapon in at the range for windage instead of shooting groups at the range, going back home and adjusting, back to the range, etc. etc. Thanks.

Dave, I keep a can of Oven Cleaner with my smithing chemicals. It eats aluminum quickly but doesn't harm steel, melonite or parkerizing. If you leave an aluminum mar just spray it and rinse it of a few seconds later and the aluminum will be gone. Also, if using a brass punch you can use copper remover (KG is the best) and it will remove it the same way as oven cleaner removes aluminum.

this is great way for tight sights like springfield but...i changed my glock sights with a piece of wood, a hammer and my feet (to sit on the piece of wood)...the glock sights usually, they come out easy...use care, lube the sites to be removed and maks your gun with duct take and just be careful! I did not need a vise for a glock. IF you hit strong resistance, STOP and try his method because its foolproof, but sometimes, superfluous. I had no trouble at all removing replacming mine.

wow, I now feel conflicted. Dave is a god in the sights community, but the install flys in the face of everything I was taught. I was always taught that 1. NEVER tap in sights. Always use a pusher 2. If you need to "fit" the sight with a file it's either out of spec, or you're just not using enough force on the pusher as dovetails use a "crush" fit (installed over 300 glock sights and have NEVER needed to fit, just crank a little harder on the MGW sight tool to get them in) 3. Red loctite is only used when you are willing to use 350-500 degrees of heat to soften it to release it, otherwise you risk shearing the end off of the set screw
@psychodadandjfit39745 жыл бұрын
I get the feeling it’s a little like my M&P Carver mag well. They make them small and that works for most M&P’s. Some tight. Mine, it was too small given the spec of my frame. So I had to take material off mike. Annoying but I see why they do it. So translating that over to these, if Dawson made these a tad smaller they’d be fine for most Glocks but some they’d slide right through and have the reputation of being junk. Just my somewhat educated guess.
@rifleshooterchannel2084 жыл бұрын
If it’s a hollow bottom sight then yes you want a “crush” fit, but a solid dovetail that is deliberately oversized will need to be fit individually.

You should do a video for the Sigs (P320). This video was very helpful, but installing the rear sight on the P320 involved removing much more material than the Glock. The install on the Glock looks so simple, I was sure I was doing something wrong on my P320. However, it did eventually work.

I know this is an old video so I hope someone sees this question. Im about to change the sights on my Sig P226. I like my sights where my hit point is just above the front sight. The problem with my P226 is that the front sight covers up the hit point. So essential what ever Im shooting at I need to cover it up with the front sight. I hate that. Is there a way to replace the sights to bring the hit point right above the front sight the way I like it? I understand an adjustable rear sight will do the trick, but can I make it happen with a fixed rear sight?

Great video. Ordered the dovetail punch and Glock front sight tool just now from your web site. Wish I'd seen your video before going to the gunsmith. After two trips the new rear sight is still not centered. Front looks okay.
@TheOpenSight11 жыл бұрын
Your glock should function fine. The reason they don't "fit" is because the 21 is fatter (wider) in the slide than the 17/19/22/23 etc, so the sights probably fit a bit narrow on the 21 (or 20/ 30 etc). SO there is likely a bit of extra room on each side of the sight on your 21

Watched your video a few times and bought your rear sight punch and the Loctite from you, I must be doing something wrong. I've got a Glock G20 Gen4, Trijicon HD I'm putting in. Your files don't look to be aggressive at all, yet, no files I have, plus the new ones from Menards, Lowes, or Sears, will touch taking off material like what you show in this video. Exactly how do you get material off the sight to get it to pound into the slide? I've fit so many times, the punch is broke.

"Fixed" means point of impact isn't adjustable without a hammer and punch. All Glock sights can be driven out of their dovetail. There are very few pistols that have sights milled into the slide (the Beretta M9 front sight comes to mind).

Fixed sights mean they don't have any real way of adjustment. They can still be adjusted and replaced by tapping them with a hammer and punch just like shown in the video. Adjustable sights are really only useful if the handguns only purpose is to be used to shoot little groups in the center of a target with different kinds of ammo.

Well… I’m certainly not surprised that Dawson precision had to make a video like this. I’ve been a Gunsmith for 26 years and every time a Customer comes in with a set of Dawson sites to be installed I roll my eyes because they are the least precise sites on the market. They are always oversize and always need to be file fit. They’re a pain in the ass. Almost every other manufacturer… Particularly true Glo has a much more precise fit. Meaning they don’t have to be filed. They are tapped in with no problems on the first attempt. Honestly… Dawson sites are a pain in the ass to install. They are always oversize.
