Sorry guys I forgot to include how to actually connect the copper wire. Its simple enough just run a bare copper wire through the pipe work and connect it to something that is earthed, you can buy braided copper wire that's not insulated and connect to a conduit or metal trunking the metal on a machine will also be a earthing point.

Thanks for that walk-thru. Regarding the static, what about using some conductive copper tape along the inside of the PVC pipes, folding it over to the outside on the connections so you can ground it with a wire from there? I guess that would work quite well and may be easier to install. Up to now I haven't yet grounded my system, but do notice a lot of static build up on the plumbing, so I'd really like to dissipate that charge before I have an issue (particularly on the CNC).

After watching this video I got an idea. You have your dust collector and you also have your dust extractor like these for small tools as you know large system is not that great for hand tool dust collecting applications. So, I bought a Kirby vacuum cleaner motor head which has an impeller that is separated from the motor, which has a separate assembly to get cooled. The impeller sucks the dust and within few inches exhausts it to a bag via 3 inch pipe. I’ve removed the bag and connected the three inch hose to a 4 inch hose to my large shop three stage dust extractor with cyclonic action. This way I have one place for all the dust from the small and large tools, none of the filter expense of expensive small systems like festool and other, takes very little space and it’s in-line install setup for under 100 bucks. Awesome video as always very informative. Thank you.

I am a retired industrial electrician (55 years in the trade) I am also a wood worker so somewhat like your self. I must say when ever I look at the inside of a shop I also checkout the electrical, yours is some of the best that I have ever seen. Over the years I have wired several shops for friend and I always used a method very similar to what you have done.

Some people have spiral wrapped the outside of PVC pipe with bare stranded copper, and fastened it about every foot with screws long enough to penetrate the inside of the conduit. Like you already mentioned, that's not grounding the entire internal surface of the PVC. Great video and keep up the awesome work!

I came up with a brilliant solution, copper piping! Glad im a plumber! =) Loved it watching an electrician installing 110 mill waste pipes !! Next time, use something like a silicone grease, use Glidex myself and that makes it easy to install and adjust angles with and so forth. Loving the channel !

I wish I had the space to run an extraction system like yours in my garage workshop. the thing I find most frustrating is, the different size fittings, pipe and outlets from machines, and when you look on the internet to get adapters, often they give you one size and dont say if those sizes are outside or inside measurements

Its so good to see someone using a proper dust extractor as opposed to a chip collector which in general tend to leave the fine dust in your workshop unless you have a paper cartridge filter although this reduces the air speed so you are back to square one with a bigger unit.

Hey John. Recently discovered your channel, always great to watch another Irish persons take on things as I usually have access to all the same tools and materials! Funny enough I've only got my dust collection system up and running in the past 2 weeks or so and also used the sewer pipe. The hardest part is getting the fittings together especially when they're high up on the walls, that washing up liquid trick looks like it works wonders! Something I found handy was 100mm manrose fittings. Flex hose fits over those really well (though I don't have the quick couplers). I made my own blast gates with 110mm holes (just made a router template) to accept the sewer pipe / fittings, then on the other side I used "Blauberg Ventilation Round Circular Ducting Wall Mounting Plate with Spigots" (didn't get those exactly but Google those and you'll see what I'm talking about) which have a flat flange plate so you screw them on right over the 110mm holes and then you can connect flex hose up easily! One other thing was I found was (relatively) cheap flex hose. It's not clear but that doesn't bother me. It's €33 quid for 5m of 100mm on Rutlands in the UK. I've been using it and it's pretty solid, though I think its 5m stretched and you probably get closer to 3.5/4m ! Rutlands also do a "stay put" hose which can support its own weight and is really handy for the drill press! All the best!

I use 3” pvc. The normal white schedule 40 stuff The 4” flexible hose fits right on to the pvc fittings perfectly. Then 2.5” hose fits 1.5” pvc fittings which isn’t as perfect as the 3”/4” size convince But I use 3” pvc runs then almost any type of fitting. 45° elbow or a Y or whatever I need then the flex hose and a clamp. What your doing here in the video seems to work well also.

I had great doubts about the suction of that canister vac vs those long 4 inch pipes; i was impressed by the result. I'm guessing the thing is pulling something like 650 CFMs. You'd probably benefit from a separator like a cyclone unit pre your vac.

The flexible pipe really is super expensive. I did a lot of research checking searching looking finding well not a lot of finding lol but a little finding of the flexible Hose. One thing I found is that the RV sewer pipe is really similar some of it is a lot cheaper but it is noticeably less your quality. Some of it’s more expensive and better quality but in that range the prices as much or in some cases even more than flexible dust collection house. Some people use dryer hose I’ve never tried it. The biggest reason is because I found some, actually quite a bit, flexible hose for extremely cheap. I’m talking about 4 inch diameter 20 foot hose for like 12 bucks the clear stuff. I got 2 1/2“ x 10‘ clear three different times for six or eight dollars. And then I got black it’s from grizzly that’s not where I got it but that’s where it originally comes from. I want to say it’s Woodstock but it is black flexible hose I think they call it stay put hose it is expandable and collapsible I got 3 inch diameter by 20 foot two separate times for $6.40 or very close to that. And then I got 4 inch diameter by 10 foot 2 times Woodstock and it was somewhere in the $10 neighborhood remember Exactly. This kind is expandable and collapsible but it doesn’t want to stay expanded on its own and it can be quite a pain in the rear to work with. The clear types I got I believe were and I’m thinking they were all power tech and they’re very nice. I would share the source if you don’t already have a clue from the brands and what single source they may all be sold from but there’s not much of a point because of the last couple of months I’ve not seen it be this cheap anymore I think more people are aware of it and snatching it up before the price gets down this cheap. What would happen is it will start at more expensive and then slowly over time it would drop in price until someone purchased it. I think now people are purchasing it when it’s in the mid and upper teen range and the normal price is low 20s mid 20s for the 2 1/2 inch diameter 10 foot. But if you’re a person that could install a permanent solution like PVC should be able to run that hard line super close if not all the way to your machine and get away with none or very very little flexible house the less that stuff the better anyway as the inside of it cuts down airflow

Greetings from Australia. Try bike inner tubes especially "Fat Tyre" inner tubes. A 150mm sleeve will fit over a joint is air tight and relatively easy to put on and take off. Best of all if you live near a bike shop they will be able to give you a broken one for free.

After a little exploring I've found that if youre happy ha ing all the pipe poo brown you can get it even cheaper than the black or grey soil pipe if you just use underground pipe. £18 for 6m of brown vs £24 for black or grey from toolstation in the UK. I'm OK with poo brown! Haha Great video.

On the subject of DX, I did see a chap that had taken the electronics out of those remote switches and put them into his Dx4000 so that he could turn on each motor independently. Less handy for you given your new dx system but handy for those of us who sometimes only need one on for use with a smaller tool like a sander or tracksaw for example.

Great video, I'm interested to see how the cable ties hold up. From experience in a factory there can be a lot of vibration through the pipe which would wear the cable ties against the metal frame on the roof.

they are heavy duty I have ran some pretty big cables in factories that would weigh a 1000 times what this pipe does and I have never had a cable come down in 20 years of doing it. So in my home work shop it won't be an issue

nice set up. you could have heated up the pipe and used a hose clamp to tighten it down onto a turned piece of wood. i think you will need a seperater in there soon. those dx4000 s are great but too small for planers . i have built a few thien baffle seperaters in my time and find them great. phil thien has a forum for people to discuss them if you are interested . im a regular there. i would add a 50mm or 63mm flex hose to the chopsaw, it would work a lot better than that shop vac hose, its probably 38mm and restricing ariflow for no benifit

Wrap tape around the smaller diameter pipe until it comes out to the inside diameter of the larger pipe to make a snug slip on fit.

Very well done!!! Now, next video, moving the dust extractor outside in it's own weather proof box with plumbing through the wall. That noise is horrific! Once that is done, installing smart switches at each machine so you can switch the extractor on and off at each machine location as well as activate the blast gate solenoid for each machine. Is there a device that will detect when the machine is drawing current and activate a relay to turn the extractor on and off when the machine turns on and off? I know, it's a small shop and your not a lazy man but even using a shop vac as a dust extractor in my shop I get slightly irritated turning the vac on and off all the time. Thanks for the ideas. This kind of system is right up my alley. How much more would 100MM metal ducting cost where you are? Here it's a tight race between PVC and metal ducting for cost. I would imagine the metal piping would be slightly noisy though compared to the PVC.

It is possible to do what you are saying. You could set it up so each machine switches the dust extractor on and opens the blast gate. Its a bit of work but not complicated. You can get remote switching sockets you just plug them into an existing socket and plug the extractor into that no wiring required just keep the remote in you pocket.

Idea... probably mentioned before but is there a way of shutting off equipment not needed when you work..... if you're at the drill but the lathe is being vacuumed and not needed.... its a quick way of checking for blockages.... should they occur !! 😀

Regarding static on PVC pipe, might coating the interior of the pipe with conductive paint ground the entire system? Conductive paint is used when electroplating non-conductive materials, as when plastic is chrome plated. That ought to make the entire interior of the pipe conductive. Of course, I don't know if the increased safety for the home shop would be worth the cost in money and effort. It depends on the price of the conductive paint, I suppose.

Easy to say in retrospect, but if you twisted that piece of pipe running down the roof line, you could make it follow the line at the right angle but it would not connect where your down pipe is. It would have to traverse over a bit.

I was thinking the same, for the plainer if you put the fittings in hit water for 10 min it will soften the Pvc making it much more flexible and then should return to it's original shape when cooled.

I have lifted my corrugated hose to a vertical position and debris seems to stay at the bottom half of the tube. I have a high cfm dust collector as well. Any help would be good.

Hi John, I'm doing something similar with my workshop and you've definitely sold me on the record power dx4000 from your other video about it, it's probably going to be the dust extractor im going to buy and it's small as my workshop is only a typical single car garage, however I'm hoping I can get away with using 68mm PVC pipe over 110mm soil stack, rag 'n' bone browns video and he said he used 68mm for his small workshop, I was wondering do you think this will be an acceptable thing to do or would it have to be 110mm pipe for the dx4000?

Great set up but with the planer thicknesser and lathe that extractor will never be up to the job, I would suggest a HVLP type of extractor for your main system and keep the drum for portable tools.

The barrel's small capacity is its only issue but its easy add a cyclone and large barrel. Its a seriously powerful extractor its designed to work in a piped system, it has more the enough power with the twin motors and it filters below 5 micron.

john that video is very good. the record dx 4000. does it give enough suction over to the other side of the workshop? i have the dx 5000 which is the same extraction volume, but i wasnt sure if it was good enough for adding to ducting. its a high pressure low volume extractor and gives about 220 cubic feet/min. this is a bit low for a table saw, which needs about at least twice that volume. anyway. how does it work on the lathe hood by the way?

Good work John, was gonna do something similar with 110mm waste pipe. I see you’ve used a Record power DX 4000, this is out of my price range and was looking to buy maybe the DX1000, in your opinion would this be powerful enough for pipes that will run about 7metres throughout my workshop ?

Hi Cathal, I'm not sure about the DX1000 with pipe work it's a good stand alone vac but might not be strong enough for a piped system.

I got the pipes for free so will test it out just to see what it’s like and sure if it’s no good will resort to a stand alone system, thanks John

Yeah you can, it just won't be good for larger chip extraction and you will need to get a extractor to suit.

@@JohnMcGrathManInShed thanks, I think I will go with 4” pipe work going from the table saw to the extractor and use the 2” pipe and flex going to my smaller tools. Time to get building 👌👍
