Changing out a water heater is a very easy process. Draining the tank takes a bit of time, but other than that, there are two fittings atop the tank and three wires to disconnect and reconnect. In this video I show, step-by-step, how to install an electric water heater. From draining the old heater tank to filling the new one.
Start with turning off the breaker at the electric panel. Then turn off the water main. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve of the tank and run the hose to a floor drain, bucket, or to the outside. While the tank is draining, disconnect the 3/4" connectors from atop the tank. Disconnect the electrical wires. Once the tank is drained, hall it out. and replace it with the new tank.
When the new tank is installed and all plumbing is reconnected, turn the water main back on. Reattach the electrical wires. Open the hot water faucets and allow air to purge from the tank. When the water has run for three minutes, shut off the hot water faucets. Check and set the thermostats as needed. Finally, turn the hot water breaker back on at the junction switch.
