Installing a Maxx Fan Deluxe in our Skoolie Bedroom!

This week we installed a new Maxx Fan Deluxe on the roof of our Skoolie! We had to cut another hole through the bus, for at least the 10th time! You'll see how we traced a square onto our bedroom ceiling and cut that out first, then drilled four holes from the inside to mark the corners of where to cut on the roof. This way both of the holes we cut lined up correctly, and the Maxx Fan fit in perfectly! We used Butyl tape to waterproof around the whole unit, and used the screws provided to mount it. Inside the bus, Mike had to tap into a 12 volt electrical wire, since we weren't sure at first what we'd be using to cool the bedroom, or where it would go. Finally, we put the shroud in place with the last 4 screws, and turned on our new fan! We chose the model WITHOUT a remote control, which can still be opened and closed for some air ventilation in the event of a power loss. We also love that the Maxx Fan can still be used while it's raining. This model will reverse it's flow to blow air into or out of the bus (intake and exhaust), and has 10 fan speed settings! We hope this will be enough to keep us cool by moving the night air across our bed while we're sleeping.

About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, throughout the Skoolie Build, and to Infinite Adventures Beyond!
Mike & Kerry

One of the things I noticed the most about your channel is the way you work and have fun together. It has the making of a channel on how a couples should be. I love the sass, the funny comments, and the ridiculously funny, at least to me, add-ons to enhance your own comments. Mistakes are taken with a grain of salt, in this case a grain of sugar. Ahhhh, the wonder of true Love. Thank you for teaching me about building the different aspects of building our own camper which is in the making, and more importantly, making us laugh! You Guys ROCK!!!

Normally with butyl tape you need to do more than one layer. I watched a guy do 2-4 layers and then his fan stopped leaking. It was a Maxx Air fan too. It helps but one layer doesn't do the job, especially on a top surface. So, just be careful. This is the coolest Skoolie on KZbin without a doubt. Very fun to watch you two do this build.

we have 3 of these in our 5R, had to older ones but just got these. Our ac is in basement, and to run both compressors we need 50a. I really like these as they circulate air nicely. We have one over bed, one in toilet room and one in rear of living room. The low profile when closed also helps our solar. Thanks for the video , it helped my husband to install ours.

Hey Mike, you know i am a fan but i really don't like scotch locks. You may be better off putting your feed wires into a connector block (suitably rated for the amperage) and fusing the fan there. It's a long run through the insulation if you get a short, plus you shouldn't loose the tapped into circuit if the fuse pops. Cracking install though, loved the pull through.

Liked the vid but you might want to remove some of the insulation and spray closed cell foam in and around the fan housing ,by doing this it will cut vibration /noise down and help keep the heat out side . Because when the out side roof heats or cools it will transfer from the top through the insulation to the inner roof.

Excellent Job on the vent. You will find out when the sun is barring down on the roof, the heat will radiate through the plastic vent. On mine, I installed bubble wrap inside the outside cover with 3M spray glue and it make a significant damper of heat coming through. On the skylight in my shower, I did the same, because it was an oven in the summer time in the bathroom. Something to keep in mind with the heat. Good Luck............... O', one last thing, I expected the insulation to be black from sweat and mildew, but it was clean as the day it was installed. If that is an example of the rest of the insulation in your bus, that is great, which it shouldn't give y'all any sinus problems later on.

I don't know how far you are along, have you considered tinting the windows with mirror tint? I'm doing my little house with it, the door and windows. It still let's light In. . as long as it's darker inside, ppl outside can only see their reflection, it's like a two way mirror, it would be very cool on a schoolie! Help keek cool, if you get like 35%-50% you can see out fine, 20% is a bit darker, it also comes in colours, but the mirror, or smoked mirror would be a awesome upgrade, especially if you keep alot of Windows! And you can do it your self, flat Windows are easy to tint!

Kerry, so sorry about the c-PSTD. The bus really is looking great you two. Mike, since you are such the fabricator, Why couldn't you fab a fishin' reel crank handle for the fan to replace the little knob? They make them with wobble joints now, so it wouldn't hang down except when in use. Just a thought.

Lookin' good you guys! Mike, you seem to have the logic program that is running through my mind. As I watch you doing all this work, I think of something, this or that, and then start telling my wife, and you do it or you say it. Kerry with the measure comment. Some people just see through all the stuff that gets in the way sometimes and just hands you the answer. Smart yeah, but there is a better word for that, I am just not sure what it is. Insightful or wise comes to mind but they seem to be blunt for what I mean. Idk, sometimes that soulmate just knows what you need. Also, one of the shots shows that long stretch down the middle of Bussy. I'm thinking it's going to be a free for all for kitty wind sprints between 3 and 4:15 am. So fun! Of course, running down there and jumping onto the bed, also very fun. Also, and very weird, sorry, it's become a "thing" to watch your show and when music comes on, it's up and dance! This is the only KZbin channel that we do this sort of thing with and I get that, well ... you know "odd" but it's fun music and such a cool and funny thing to have after 37 years together. So thanks for that. lol Love the bus and you two silly buggers making it so nice for the rest of us. Carry on.

I hope you dont mind me putting my $.02 in but I'm wondering what you're using for a fresh air intake? Hot air rises so if you set the fan to vent the hot air will rise out on its own if you allow a fresh or sometimes called make up air to bleed in, it will also help with cooling the bus.

Thank you and yes since we left all the windows in the bus it gives us a variety of ways to allow fresh air in as well as the Skylight that opens. Duds I have watched almost All of your vids (and dutifully gave a thumbs up) and I have resisted up to this point from telling you guys about Dicor it is the standard by which all other self-leveling sealants are measured but dude you are in for a rude awakening every screw you put in that roof and it's screw head is exposed will leak water (believe it or not) water will follow the threads of a screw down into your bus and ruin your lives so take it from an old time motor homer go slather everything upon the roof in Dicor! Off-Grid A/C at night idea! It's in use at my engineer friend's off-grid fishing cabin. He's a retired wing wiper, so no plans to finally learn about sweat or discomfort during his golden years ;) He used a standard "garage chest freezer" full of water with an automobile radiator mounted inside, running off daily solar overproduction. That heat-exchanger is part of a closed loop containing antifreeze, with an electric pump plumbed to two more automobile radiators and fans to distribute cold air. A thermostat with a couple of simple circuits drives it, everything is DC so no inverter at night. The freezer, cabin, and coolant lines are well insulated. He says it will freeze you out of the bedroom, especially since the freezer runs all week so the thermal mass is 100% frozen when he arrives for the weekend, even when it's cloudy. He suggested I insulate/isolate the bedroom of my BlueBird Wanderlodge BusRV and do something similar. We follow skydiving weather and visit family all around the Gulf of Mexico so the soul-crushing heat/humidity combo makes cooling difficult, especially around that concrete swamp called Houston, TX. We avoid clouds and already have an excess of incoming solar during the day, plus the infrastructure and money for a few more panels. We definitely DON'T have the money for extra panels plus enough extra LiFePO4 to store the needed juice for regular A/C at night. I'm a software dev/electronics nerd so an Arduino controlled system under my bed would be fun, with a short coolant run, one radiator/fan at the head of the bed, and cheap temp sensors and simple UI to log and tune flow rate, fan speed, and room temp. I plan to cannibalize a used fridge/freezer, then build a super-insulated plywood/foamboard/fiberglass freezer to fit under the bed. I'm also prepared to cut out the middle-man, and just sew PEX coolant lines between two bedsheets if Plan A doesn't beat this heat. Just an idea now that your HVAC is complete, with no room under your bed, duh. Blue Skies!

Forgot to mention having a matrix of stainless steel plates, not to keep water from sloshing, but to conduct heat across the container through the ice. Otherwise the ice insulates pockets of melted water from the freezer evaporator coil.

Those used to "T in" to the existing wires? I've never had a problem with them failing later on down the road. In my experience they usually fail when I give them a test wiggle, or right after I put the panel back on. On the other hand, I only have about 2 days experience. Hell, when I didn't have good automotive connectors I'd twist stranded wire together and then fold the twisted part back alongside the *correct* wire so they won't just pull apart, then tape it tight and right, you'll have connection strong enough to swing from.
