Top job J , and a great addition to ATS people should never under estimate how hard and difficult it can be to hand haul your hook up with 50 or more meters of chain on it especially if it’s blowing a hoolie. I look forward to seeing each back next time . Stay safe from the salty old Pom.

The brain and mind is willing but the body is hesitant, I’ve been sailing for more years than I care to mention both professionally and for pleasure, it’s great to see a young couple enjoying sailing and getting stuck into the mundane day to day tasks that arise. I think I mentioned before that there are hundreds of sailing vloggers on KZbin but most of them are about tits , ass and look how wonderful I am and not about the sailing and sailing life. That’s why I like your vlogs your down to earth normal……….ish people. Another vlog I follow is ran sailing they’re a great couple with a young child and johan sure knows his onions , check them out. Anyway I’m waffling , keep up the good work because you bring me and I’m sure many many others very happy memories of the sailing life stay safe. Stewart.

good cabling work, you definitely want the breaker as close to the source as you say so you can isolate and protect the cable run itself, but also because the amperage draw on that circuit will be higher as the source than at the winch.

How has it gone over the last year? I wonder if you need a dedicated windlass battery closer the bow to reduce voltage loss - this will result in intermittent loss of power. Did you seal the inside walls of the four holes by over size drilling, filling and drilling the correct size- you didn’t mention that. Also I wonder if the size windlass is big enough for your size of boat, it looks small/ not very powerful, which would strain and heat it up, burning the oil inside the unit. I’m doing the same job this week, on the same size boat as yours, but replacing a unit similar to yours or bigger with one double the size with the addition of a rope winch drop on top . Anyway, nice job.

Hi Andrew. Thanks for subscribing and your comment. We knew that the 850 was at the upper end of its spec, but the Cavs 37 weight about 7.5 tonne and Muir said we should be fine, so long as we didnt overload the motor (i.e winch the boat up on the chain). We also ran very heavy duty cable (50mm square) to the winch via the reversing solinoid. wanted an isolator close to the battery to reduce dead draw. So far the system has been running well, I will be putting up an episode soon about refurbing the paint on the winch recently, and why/how. Stay tuned, and thanks for your tips. Keep them coming!

Great job, its amazing how heavy the chain is when you just lay it out. How have you found the Giantz battery ,and if I can ask what size house battery's did you install, cheers

Hi Paul, yes it’s heavy stuff. So we have two 300ah AGMs making total 600ah. We’ve never had to use shore power or a genie. All thanks to Cal and Di who installed them 😃

What did you do with the old holes?

Gday Philip, as the old holes were sealed, I filled them with non hardening marine sealant, and only one is visible outside the new winch footprint. Ideally I’ll remake another stainless plate to cover this one too, when I have access to my workshop again.
