Thanks for the advice especially since this is the first engine I am rebuilding and it's a 350 sbc.

I built the same pipe section that you did. However instead of using it to directly drive the tube in, I installed a 5/8 split collar around the tube to take the impact. Saves the tube from nicks, and the split collar grabs the tube firmly and won't flatten the little 'bulge' in the pickup tube. The split collar was part # 1L699 from Grainger. $3.00

Spot on using the collars! Great idea, thanks

Well, I got the split collar and I found out that an O2 sensor socket will fit perfectly over the tube and rest squarely on the split collar. I was able to drive the pickup tube easily. Thanks for split collar info.

I used the slip collar from Grainger also

I just wanted to say thank you. I took your advice and made a tool out of copper tubing.

Thanks! This helped a lot, was kinda confused but this really helped!

I'm going to use a copper pipe with a hose clamp to keep copper pipe from expanding at the swell on the screen tube.

Do you account for the oil pan gasket thickness?
@Thundarr9953 жыл бұрын
1/2 in is too much. The Chilton's manual says 1/4 in to 3/8 in off the bottom of the pan. And if you plan on using a performance cam? It's a good idea to tig weld or braze the pickup on. They pickup can vibrate loose and fall off. I use red loctite on the tube and tap it in with the tool. Let it cure 24hrs. Make sure that it's in the correct position. It's not a good idea to move the pickup after you've tapped it into the oil pump.

I'm going to use a copper pipe being a softer metal does less damage pounding screen tube in.

Melling recommends welding these on
@fpsdano74466 жыл бұрын
Myvintageiron7512 you are correct. If your motor will regularly be over 6k rpms they recommend that so the tube doesn’t slip out from all the vibration. On a stock or mild setup sweating them on should be fine but you could spot tig both pcs on to be safe.

Your supposed to have your oil pan gasket on the block
@Mrbest-cw9nn9 ай бұрын
You didn't show how you put the screen onto the oil pump how do you slide it in do you loosen those little four studs their pull the top cover off or how do you put the screen tubing into the pump!!!!
@fpsdano74469 ай бұрын
The screen part is connected to the tube from the factory. You don't open those 4 studs, unless you plan on rebuilding your oil pump. You just connect the two parts.

DOes really brand new oil pump increase oil pressure? 4.3 Vortec has 1\4 of a gauge oil pressure after heat up... any ideas?
@fpsdano74466 жыл бұрын
Nicky Surr could be a number of things... you’re saying your current oil pump seems weak?
@wandalllither24526 жыл бұрын
Cant raise oil pressure, even with Lucas HD, still 1\4 of the gauge,after warm up, i cleaned engine twice, new purolator oil filter, Mobil 1 oil 10w30, but still some of the pushrods is knockin(losing to much oil pressure from there?) Even if i replace the oil pump i need to replace the pushrods as well, GM says it must be done at 210k, mine is 250k miles. Dont know what to do... =\
@fpsdano74466 жыл бұрын
Nicky Surr I think first you should get a real gauge that tells you a PSI number rather than those idiot gauges. What did it read prior? You could also have sludge buildup on your pickup tube screen.

am running a high flow oil pump on my v6
@wandalllither24524 жыл бұрын
@camaroguy 66 valve lifter failed, i replaced em all. It is basically variable valve train at some point, oil pressure raises the valves more on higher rpm, i did an experement- disable cooling fan and let engine warm up up to 220F- oilpressure drops significantly and engine has no power- because lifters cant be filled with oil hence less fuel/air mixture can be sucked in hence less power. Im going to install some external motor oil cooler, Car now has 270k miles :)

Can I put locktight on the pick up tube instead of welding ? I juss have a dead stock 5.7 350 in a 94 k1500
@YTConceptionX3 жыл бұрын
You dont have to weld it, but it is recommended that you do.
@TheGamersRace2 жыл бұрын
You can also braze it.

What? There’s no windage tray in the oil pan. That bolts to #3 and #4 main caps and lays on top of the oil pump where you put the bolt into that holds it down. Strange ...

Clamp a pair of vice grips, gently, onto the the tube just above that bulge and then hit the vice grips. Save ya from making that tool
