I have to give you a Great Deal Of Praise for this video. I followed your instructions almost to the "T". I dropped the whole metal plate instead of leaving it hang by one body bushing. My father (God rest his soul) was a great mechanic but I am not as good as he was. My brother did a rack on another car and it wasn't nearly as easy as ours. Once again, Thank You for this video, it was "EXTREMELY" helpful and made the job much easier for those who lack the experience like myself. Thanks Again!!!

These cars have a heavy pivot point on the front. If you are not careful the front might drop and tilt down onto you as it is heavier with the motor, etc. so make sure your pivot point is forward and not backward to the balance of the car body. Be safe or get crushed in the front if it tilts onto you.

Thanks for the video. A couple pointers from the experience: Lower the front suspension frame as far as it can with out dropping it. 2 bolts either side. Remove the back ones leave the high front ones at minimum thread to hold the frame. Remove the aluminum heat shield near the car on filter. 3 little sheet metal screws. Remove the carbon canister. 4 bolts and 3 hoses. Have replacement hose clamps ready. Remove the rack and pinion hydraulic lines. Remove the steering column per video. continued

Grate vid, I do have one suggestion, two days before you want to remove the rack spray penetrating fluid on once or twice a day before you start to work, on the tie rode ends and other nuts you want to remove. This should make removing a lot easier. you should drive it during those days as the vibration will drive the fluid in the parts.

Good quality for a 8 year old video. Just did the p.s. pump yesterday. Drove fine for about 80 miles. Then something popped lost all fluid. Coming from rack. Customer understands thank god but lookes at it today and thought we were screwed. But this video proves its not that bad. Not as bad as the p.s. pump

This may be old news since I didn't feel like reading. The proper way is to loosen the tie rod ends before you you remove the ends from the steering knuckles, and then count how many turns it takes to remove it from the rack. That way you don't have to have the tie ends in your way. Then count the same turns when installing so you can take it for an alignment if needed.

Disconnect steering column Remove 3 bolts holding rack. Slide rack with outer tie rods still on halfway to passenger side. Twist and turn rack so driver side end drops through opening in black metal stiffener panel. Slide rack assembly towards driver side until it is free of car. No need to remove black stamped metal panel. I did final tightening of hydraulic lines from above. Take 2 aspirin 2005 dodge grand 3.8

Thanks for the quick reply. I think i found the tool that i need to remove the inner tie rods: look up the Lisle 46600 - Inner Tie Rod Wrench Universal. It's got set screws to tighten down onto the round ball to get a grip on it. Cheapest listed price I found is $27 and a hell of a lot easier than dropping the rack just to get at those tie rods. The tool I rented from Advanced Autoparts had three different size hex heads but there were no hex flats to grab onto. Thanks again for your help!

Hi:) You can take the rubber boot of and take the large nut off the end of the rack on the other end of inner tie rod there might be a pop rivet or tab locking the nut in place and that nut that is on the end of the outer tie rod is a jam locknut that has to be loosened before you can take the tie rod off.

ok after watching this video we had hardly no issues changing out rack and pinion. but we did not have to remove the circular bolt with the screwdriver and hammer, I guess it is because we have a 1999 maybe?? but after soaking everything In liquid wrench, everything came apart and together simply. Thank you for the how to video.

There is a tool called a pickle fork that is used to remove the ball joints. Saves a lot of work and lot less hammering. There is pickle forks for a air hammer so you don't have to use the hammer as the tool does the work

@905speedgta

John Zollner The only time you use that tool is when your Replacing a tie rod end or a ball joint Completely, and not when your moving it to Service something else.. Using that tool like ***** Said will Destroy the Rubber Boots that hold the Grease in and keep Debris out of the joint. The tool also will put stress on the Joint, When Hammering the Pickle Fork in, a good hard hit might send the tool right into the joint causing pre-mature wear to the joint.. Your supposed to Knock a joint loose like I did, Giving the Boss End of the Knucle a few good slams, thats why theres a flat spot there. Its for that.

the key to getting the lines off is to do it threw the floorboard hole after breaking them loose then unbolt the rack so you can move it around to get the wrench on and off. when inserting new rack install the lines first using the hole and with fingers!!! do not crosthread these lines they have tons of pressure and will leak you should be able to screwm the 90 percent in with your fingers before torqueing them.905 is number one in my book

William, The video should give you enough information to help you. This job was a long time ago, I think what I did for the nuts ontop was I used a vise grip and turned them out from the bottom. The black metal reinforcement was a pain in the ass. thats why i took it down. Dont give up yet, im sure if you have got this far you can finish the job. let me know how it works out. by the way.use a vise grip that doesnt have flat teeth. they sell ones that when you close theres a arch in the middle.

Removed rack by slipping it through center hole of support plate. Didn't take any bolts off plate. Remove 3 nut/bolts, fluid lines from rack then slide it to passenger side until drivers side tie rod end can be dropped into center hole and turn rack so it can be pulled out towards drivers side. I took out battery, cruise control unit and filters(2) under drivers seat for access to fluid lines. There are lines in the way that need to be moved a little but you'll see that. Not sure why people remove plate

To lock the steering wheel in place if you're having problems pool the driver side seat belt all the way out slowly until it's fully extended wrap it around the steering wheel and clip it into the seat belt buckle pull the seat is far away from the steering wheel as you can get it and it will hold the steering wheel from spinning while you're playing with everything else again pull slowly and make sure before you disconnect anything your steering wheel is centered and the wheels are as well

Overall, I found this to be an informative video. I would, however, offer a couple suggestions to possibly make the job a little easier. First, tape the steering wheel to the steering column to keep it from moving. Before removing the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles, I would pre-loosen the nuts holding the tie rod ends to the rack and then remove both tie rod ends before removing rack. I would also pre-loosen the hoses where they attach to the rack.

Thanks for making the video! I just had to do the one on our 2005. It went well but it was very hard getting the hoses loose and I had to get them loose before I could get a wrench on the large nut above the rack near the steering connection. Not sure what wrench would have worked better but at least it didn't cost me $800 at the repair shop! Also I loosened the nuts on the tie rods first. After that they came off easily.

funny you call that old, it's one of my newest cars. Yea I think you are right, I will just do the inners. Mine has been a good grocery getter, bought it as a lien sale from a transmission shop. Paid $1200 for the transmission and owned the whole van. Put ~50k miles on it so far, probably around $2k total cost, mostly tires because of the alignment issue.

just did 2005 dodge caravan rack and pinion it took me 7 .hours total.i suggest having a freind help.after taking the tires and tyrods off take of the small pollution i recomend going for the structural reinforocemet plate .i just took mine all the way off it was about fifteen bolts total i had an impact for the big bolts and wrench on the top that took only fifteen minutes then though the hole in the florboard loosen the top line.i then debolted the charcoal box it was very easy to take off with that 3ft by 2ft plate brace removed after that unbolt the rack its easy to get too with that plat all the way off. then you can drop the rack and twist it while someone on top takes the bottom power steering line off through the hole in the floor board.its very time consuming getting those lines off and i had to call a freind to help wrench it offf and on threw that 4 inch hole in the floor board.that was the key for us doing it.wrenches and sockets used were 8mm 10 mm 11 mm 12mm 13mm 14mm 18mm 21mm 22mm wrenches and sockets for all sizes also a 2lb hammer a punchdriver for the roll pin worked great for me and a pickle fork for the tyrod ends i just beat them off on the knuckle .this video and maker are awesome and i thank you for the video and im sorry to here someone stole your van.also i broke the tyrod nuts that keep them from turning first and used penatrating oil before doing so.count the turns on both sides when removing. so in summary have a helper drop and remove the plate he has dangleing it seems like a lot of work but its doable.and the lines are easiest to remove through the hole just break them loose before unbolting the rack then have one guy on top doing the lines and a guy on the bottom twisting back and forth so the guy on top can get the wrench on the flat of the bolt.the key for me was removing the plate asap then the charcoal box brake the lines loose threw the hole in the floorboard then unbolt the rack completly have a friend manover it around .when installing the new one have a buddy underneath put the obootom line on threw the hole and tighten then the top line threw the whole and tighten. then bolt the new rack on whole guy on top puts the ujoint collar bacl on and install roll pin then put the charcoal canister back in then the plate then the little pollution device hook up hoses. count turns for tyrods rebolt and fill with about a quart and a half of fluid.mine turned out good i bought my rack off ebeay for 87 bucks delivered took three days for shipping.feel free to contact me threw you tube if you get in a bind or want advise.once againg thanks and praise to the videomaker on this one

I took it into my friends shop because we had to Torch ( heat up) the nut that holds the outter tie rod end on.. When taking tie rod ends off A heat gun or better a torch is your best friend..heat it up for 15 20 seconds and crack it loose. tie rod ends is easy, crack that nut loose I think it was counter clockwise, then turn the tie rod end counter clockwise till it is fully removed. count the turns, cause you will need to know how many turns to put the new one on. I used no manual. did it solo

You might have to drop the cradle alittle bit, the shop manual I left really didnt help much. good luck with the two lines running to the rack they are hard to get to without lowering the rack alittle bit. remember those lines are 18mm, dont use a line wrench you will be there forever. btw I think I used a socket and breaker bar on that nut on top. I really didnt have any probs with them. let me know how it turns out.

Question? Is it possible to loosen an emission hose while doing this and if so will it cause a 457 code? I had mine repaired recently and my engine, gas cap light, and airbag light has been on ever since. I don't think the airbag light is connected to it though and I'm confident that it's not the gas cap because normally when I tighten it the light goes off. It's been (7) days now.
@905speedgta
@905speedgta 10 жыл бұрын
Sister Mattie Yes, Theres a hose that often gets loosened during this process. its right under the rack and pinion. Also, Yes. Your airbag light is connected to this aswell. If the shop accidently spun the steering wheel while the rack was disconnected from the vehicle, say goodbye to your clock spring inside the steering column that delivers signal to the air bag and other things.. get the SRS codes for the airbag light, Ill bet its for a faulty clockspring or some loose wiring along the way by the steering column.. You have to be carful with who services your car. let me know what you find out

you can hit the bottom of those bolts with a hammer using a block of wood to keep from damaging them, they pop out fairly easy, also you have to have a 18 mm claw wrench with a long extension bar or forget it, I took that whole brace off it was a pain in the butt but it did make removal and putting the new one on much easier. my problem now is the new rack and pinion steering pin does not line up with the knuckle it was removed from and I am trying to find out which I should turn to make it line up, the knuckle that comes down from the steering wheel? or the new rack, I'm guessing the new rack as the other might mess up the clock spring over all good information would have preferred an entire replacement video that might have answered this question having had an opportunity to do this again I would have parked it in a bad neighborhood and left the keys in it

The directions with the rack and pinion tell you that the rack is centered and ready to install but my rack did not come centered. I called the support line and one of the guys told me to turn the rack all the way to the right and then all the way to the left and count the number of turns, it was 3.2 turns so I turn it back to the right 1.6 turns and it was at twelve oclock the same as my rack. I did this with both racks to make sure they sent me the correct one. i did not remove the brace off the bottom and was able to get the rack out but it did take some finagling. I also replaced the high pressure hose not because it was leaking but because I have over 210,000 miles on the car and it was a piece of cake without the rack in the way. Hope this helps

This job believe it or not is actually Foggy to me id have to look at my pictures and avideo and review it again. The cradle holds the rack and a few other things, but not the engine. the engine is actually suspended on the unibody.

Thanx for the video, it is much more helpful than any manual. my leak turns out to be the 2 small lines that stay on the steering rack, aka "gear fluid lines" all else is all nice. a $30 repair but the work is almost what you needed to do. the rack needs to drop far enough to reach on top of it to change these lines. ?? How did you say u removed the 2 big steering lines from the rack ?? i cant find a way to reach them well enough. be well and mechanically sound my friend.

I have a '92 with 220k miles on it. the R&P works like a champ but the tie rods are worn making my alignment bad. What do you think should I just replace the tie rods or the whole thing? I'm worried I'll spend my saturday doing the tie rods and then 6mo from now it will be leaking ..

Mark, This video was back n the day when I was just starting out, today Im alittle more in detail with my videos. Sorry for not having a assembly video of me putting the rack back in, But its basically done in reverse order. As far as your steering issue goes. you may need to lubricate that part while you put it on. if i remember correctly, theres only on way of putting it on..im gonna have to look at my caravan and see. try not to beat it on something might break

What about positioning the new shaft? Does it come centered out of the box? Another southern guy spends much time on that.

kc scott its allgood KC is right about that. Junkyards want $75 to 100 for them, I think I payed $85 for a rebuilt one from a reputable rebuilder. And forget the dealer man, go on ebay and you can even get Genuine MOPAR parts for a fraction of the cost.. I just bought a spare tire winch assembly for a 2008 jeep cherokee for a customer. auto parts store said DEALER ONLY and dealer wanted close to 400 for it.. ONLINE ONLINE ONLINE is all I can say. Online shopping is killing the mom and pop businesses and the big chains..and ofcourse the tax man.

Those lines are a pain in the butt. I'm doing this job right now and it's taken me over 2hrs. just to get them off. There is no room for a wrench from under neath. What I did was use the whole in the floor on the drivers side where the steering column goes thru and cracked the lines that way. Once I got them loose enough, loosen them by hand from under neath. (Do the reverse when installing them.)

its allgood Tell me about it.. those lines took me forever too. Theres a few ways around it but it involves totally lowering the cradle. This job was soo long ago Im beginning to not recall everything I did.. But I will never forget those lines. how close did you come to saying " FUCK THIS" lol

Hi Guys, I did this job and was not successful. I removed the battery and cruise control and you get to the lines from up above. this worked but I cross threaded the low pressure line and now it's stripped. This job took me so long to do I am really I am at wits end with this job. I'll get another rack, but there has to be a better way to get the lines installed. Are there any better ways to do this? Rick

I just replaced rack and pinion from my 2003 grand caravan, and as most of you already said, its a pain in the ass to remove both lines from the rack, Sadly, after over 10 hrs, I got a bigger fluid leak with new part installed, so my question now is, what if I messed up and put back revesed lines? can somebody tell me which one is the high pressure and wich one is the return line in the rack itself?

II got about 250k on my 2006 Camry don't want to put money into it besides that car good mechanical condition drives smooth any advice? I wanna make this car last without doing unnecessary work $$ save money fyi my mechanic said i got at least 20 more k on it minimum but who really knows

How much for the new R&P? Did you buy new, used, or re-man? So basically an 18mm socket, hammer or mallet, and a phillips head screwdriver? That's all you need?

Hey you have a rack and pinion just like my dodge dakota and i just noticed today that im loseing a lot of power steering fluid in a spot where those plastic covers cover the tie rod bar so i guess that would be the seal,my question being do you have to replace the entire rack and pinion for a seal leak?like you can change a seal?

Just curious cuz the R&P is leaking like a siv on my wifes '02 Grand Caravan...I'm not VERY mechanically inclined, but I might give it a shot instead of bringing it in and paying over a grand to get it fixed.

Mine was a 2003 and they were nearly the same from 2001 to 2007. other then the stow and go feature introduced in 2005. you dont have to remove the steering wheel, But you do have to remove the steering shaft that connects to the rack and pinion. are you sure your reading it correctly?. it may be telling you to remove the steering shaft..

The cradle that you loosened up... Does it actually support anything? I am working on my sway bar bushings and the passenger side was easy but that drivers side is not so accessible... Looks like I might need to loosen mine as well... Just don't want crap falling on me unexpectedly... Any advice? And great job! Very informative!

Bro thanks for the video. A friend needed this done on an 06. Your video helped alot but, you didn't show putting it back together. It's all back together but, I wanted to know if there was anything you could tell me about putting the steering column back on the shaft to the rack. It's not wanting to just slide onto it and before I get to beating on it I figured I'd ask. And also how rough is putting that pin back in? If you can help anymore it'd be really appreciated. Thanks.
