In this video I am installing a new vise in my shop. My wife got this Yost vise with 6 inch jaws for me as a Christmas present. I am installing it so it overhangs the bench, with a metal leg as extra vertical support.

Funny. At first I thought that a ‘vise user’ doesn’t need a video to install it. Now I wonder why my vise doesn’t have a plank to position it better. Thanks for the entertaining and apparently useful video :-)

I would have put another flange on the other end of the pipe in order to spread the load out over a bigger area.

Nice of her to get that for you ... broke my vise recently ... checking things out. Been thinking of putting it out on a plank like that.... Think I'll go with 1/2 inch or 5/8 bolts though ..Thanks.

Hey boss suggest you put bolts through bench instead of flimsy screws. Plus bolt bench to wall properly to stop any movement. Another suggestion clean on face of bench and fasten a length of angle, you may have to rout to the depth of angle iron and fasten with metalthread counter sunk screws . Hope the ideas help. Here in India, we dont have even a good choice of vises to purchase in the shops. Very non-mechanical. I am planning to get a Yost shipped from US.

It has been great! My wife got it for me for a Christmas present and it’s done everything that I’ve wanted it to, as well as being a huge upgrade over my last vise. Thanks

I would have installed the smaller vise, on your center table.

What’s the advantage of this over mounting it straight to the bench?
@TheArtofCraftsmanship
@TheArtofCraftsmanship 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your question. With the vise out over the edge of the table like this I am able to get to all sides of it a bit easier. I can also clamp things into it that then can hang straight down. If it were directly to the table it would be more limiting to what I would be able to hold. Thanks again.

What’s that leg support thing called that you put under the vise? Thanks for the video!
@TheArtofCraftsmanship
@TheArtofCraftsmanship 3 жыл бұрын
The leg support was a 1” piece of black pipe threaded into a flange which was screwed into the board. (I think you were asking about the flange.)
@enice617
@enice617 3 жыл бұрын
The Art of Craftsmanship yup! Do the pipes come threaded? I’m trying to do the same for my bench vise
@TheArtofCraftsmanship
@TheArtofCraftsmanship 3 жыл бұрын
EDWIN617 they do, usually on both ends. I think I got a 3-4 foot piece and cut the floor end to length.

Many thanks for your vice advice. I'm just wondering why so many are mounted on the LEFT side of the bench ??? Are most workshop folks left-handed ? Anything to do with political persuasion ? Surely it's neither of these. Is it more practical in some way on the left ? Mine is lmounted at the RIGHT hand corner of the bench, and has a swivel base like yours, which make it quite veratile..

The force pressure on these vises are soft and brittle not a logic choice.....

No drill press, no proper pipe cutter, bunch of screws instead of bolts. Hold the board to the bench same way you held the vise to the board.
Installing a "basic" vise is pretty difficult.
