The mid length terminal is also often used as a "switch" to activate a pre-amp circuit (or active pickups). When the jack is plugged in it completes the battery connection and provides power to the pre-amp, herefore when unplugged the pre-amp isn't drawing battery power.

Had to watch again to find the name of the tool you used. Spanner wrench. I have a very narrow space around the nut and might still have to use a router to widen the area. Don't buy cheap as I did and reason to replace the jack.

I have a Kramer (1984 style) and have interference when cable jacks at certain angles.- I’d like to replace/work on my own gear, but first what soldering kit req’s must I have for guitar 🎸 work and soldering wire gauge? Thanks

I recommend a 40 watt soldering iron like the Weller WLC100. For soldering, I use Kester 44 rosin core .031" (.8mm) diameter wire.

I have a guitar with this style of jack, but the side wall of the guitar is as thick as the length of the barrel, and the nut is down inside a cylindrical recess. The only way I can think of to tighten this is to disconnect the wires, and go at it with a deep socket, then re-solder the wiring. Any other ideas?

My Ibanez sr300eb has a eq circuit. How would i wire that up to where when the cable plug is pushed in it turns on the preamp circuit? Thanks

Could you do a video on how to drill for a barrel jack? Much appreciated Chris!

@@edwindenhertog7849 I put the guitar body in a large secure vice w/the guitar body wrapped in a towel folded over 4 times/thick, once secured i mark w green tape the x marks spot drill point and a straight directional line to eye my drill bit along w/into the cavity (for sight) I keep the tape on w the ‘x’ to reduce chipping - then drill out very slowly with power hand drill and 1/2” pointed bit. Esp go slow when you reach the interior cavity you’ll feel when you are about to break through - do not apply much pressure /push the drill while drilling through the entire process, just slight pressure enough to see even amount of sawdust falling - slow and steady wins the race! Good luck.

Hi nice video really helped me when I changed my bass pickups but I only get really low output ( 600 watts and can barely be heard over the drums) and the jack itself is amplifying outside noise like if I tap on the cable I can hear it through the amp and I can hear the cord rubbing on my leg while I play . Could it be a faulty jack? I really don't know what to do anymore it's okay for rehearsal but I can't play shows like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I mostly use this kind of jacks, or the Tele jacks (the version with screws, not the lock-on version)

Hello, what is the diameter of this jack ? I need to drill a new hole in my bass and I have no idea the number of the drill.

Maybe is a matter of quality, but im your opinion what is better? Barrel jack or the standard jack? I found that they fail more often that the regular ones, the common problem is that they not make contact when you put the cable and there is no way to fix it. As i said, maybe is just a quality thing.

What is the reason to solder the shielding to the volume pot if the other end is not connected to ground?
@ctimlock4 жыл бұрын
The back plate of the pot is attached to ground. Only one end of the shielding should be connected to ground, otherwise it can potentially create a ground loop.

What if youre installing active pickups, that require a battery?
@HighlineGuitars3 жыл бұрын
Panel jacks can be wired mono or stereo, so they work fine with active pickups.

This is great information and all, but who's jack?
@HighlineGuitars4 жыл бұрын
Panel Jack was a legendary luthier who died while plugging his guitar into an improperly grounded amp during a rainstorm.
