Installing a Roof Vent and Screen Door in My Cargo Trailer Conversion/Motorcycle Hauler/Camper Build

Part three of my cargo trailer conversion into the ultimate motorcycle toy hauler and camper setup is the scariest and most nerve wracking yet. In order to do a cargo trailer roof vent installation, you must first cut a hole in the roof of your trailer. As a very non-handy person, this was an intimidating step for me. Fortunately, with the help of my daughter, I was able to figure out how to install a roof vent in an enclosed trailer and successfully cut a hole in the roof, attach the cargo trailer roof vent, frame in the vent from below using 2x2s, attach the garnish, and use self-leveling sealant to seal the trailer roof vent from above. With that more or less successfully accomplished, we moved on to adding an enclosed trailer screen door and some battery-powered LED lights near each door.
My combined enclosed trailer camper conversion and enclosed trailer toy hauler conversion is going well! We're just about ready to start camping out of this thing. My first cargo trailer camper trip is coming up next week, so we'll get a chance to test it out and see just how well this thing works for camping and riding trips very soon!

Knew the Safety Police would show up in the comments. LOL I so want to cut a vent in the roof of my trailer too. You may inspire me to do it.

When you do think Lights, I did LED strips on the ceiling bars. All wired to the trailer power with a switch so I can power them battery pack (GoalZero Yeti 150). I can charge it with a couple small solar panels and it will easily power the lights and other small stuff.

Get one of those. Vent covers to put over the vent you just installed. It protects it from getting broken off if it get winding and you can leave it open when you are on the road to keep fresh air in your trailer. Works great have done it to mine.

May I make a suggestion? Stabilizer jacks on the rear corners. I used some cheap bottle jacks and blocks of wood. It'll keep the trailer from bouncing around if there is more then one person sleeping inside or if the wind is blowing and it will also keep the trailer from tipping back if you are loading it without it being attached to the truck. Cheers.

Not sure what you have planned for sleeping(bed or whatever). You might run another E-Track, or some sort of hard point towards the top of the walls to rig up some hammocks. With a trailer basically no weight and they pack up small. Just an idea.

Are you thinking about a solar panel on top to charge the DC battery and run gadgets?

You can use an ice cube to smooth out silicone. It will make a bad job look really good not saying you did a bad job. It all look good.

No need to use anything on self leveling sealant to make it look pretty. It's supposed to turn pretty by itself, like in this blob I made: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnTTdYiCr9p9hLc

That is a really light trailer.. and the roof panels are not attached to the crossmembers? interesting.. Believe it or not, they put those same Vent assemblies on 100 thousand dollar RV's now. Anything owned by "Thor".. which is most RV company's.. . The Dicor is self leveling and you just have to cut the hole bigger and just go round it.. not the squiggle back and forth thing.. (retired from the sea, been working on RV's for 6 years now)

I clearly watched the wrong KZbin video before I did it. I'm gonna scrape it off and redo it I think.
@captsam54
@captsam54 2 жыл бұрын
@@DorkintheRoad It gets messy, will clean up w/ mineral spirits. but u shouldn't need that.. Just scrape off what old you have. don't be concerned if a little is left.. Get some self leveling DICOR cut the tip off to the size of a pencil, and go around the outside edge 1st. then dollop every screw head.. will come out perfect. none of that little squiggly back and forth stuff.. lol, on a normal "peel & seal" on a trailer/RV, it takes a couple of days to get the old stuff off., and 2 hours to put the new back on..

The local police take the call and the neighbor says, "my neighbors are scrapping trailers in their driveway". McLovin calls in and says "No. That is Dork teaching lil that we have lots of room for error when installing vents"!!
