My idea for solar charging my EV is to take advantage of that $5000 federal grant to get grid-tied solar panels installed on the house. Bonus if I program the EVSE to only charge when the sun is out, or the wholesale price of power is very cheap. One wrinkle is that you have to size the [grid-tie] system based on your utility bills from the last year. May need to install electric water heat, heat pump, and daily drive my EV for a year first: just to get the capacity I want.

@@corradettimotorsports360 Downside of a grid-tie system for your interest is that if the grid goes down: so does your solar.

hmm... just charging the 12v battery doesn't do much and can be done w/ a simple dashboard solar cell, doesn't need anything on the roof. it may be overkill, but you could get a small battery backup like a jackery or ecoflow river or delta 2 or river 2. charge that from as many panels as you can fit on the roof, then plug that battery into your car's AC charger. (run the cables through a cracked back window?) that would get you a few miles a day.

I like anything to do with these i-MiEVs. They just look pleasant and "friendly." They are just about perfect for the tiny island of O'ahu on which I live. Wishing you success in this project. Aloha!

@@toyotaprius79 About 15 years ago, we here had a such a shortage of opihi (whelks), that the state banned people from harvesting them for quite a while. Ireland stepped in and helped us out with this "Hawaiian" delicacy! So mahalo nui loa to Ireland and your fabulous opihi. You did us a solid!🤙

There are a few other options when hooking them up, my brother is the expert when it comes to these things, he is going to play around a bit to maximize their output!

I'd put the panels just in front of the antenna to avoid shading, but put the wiring towards the back. Usually on hatchbacks there's a cable gland so you can get the wiring into the cabin.

The panels seem to work great with that setup. but yes, we are still figuring out how to best run them, its still a work in progress! Thanks for the suggestions though, its greatly appreciated!

this solar controller is a mppt?

It has a built in regulator, from what I read on the instructions, but I do plan on upgrading it to a proper mppt.

Would love to know if you can develop some modifications to the body oanels to improve the aero of the iMiEV. Clean underbody and a Mirage spoiler I think....

That I am unsure of, it would take a lot of R&D investments to make a impact, I like the idea you have for the rear spoiler, that can be a easy mod, the undercarriage is "mostly" flat! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy the outcome, I should have another video out in the next day or two!
