Some nail the last 2 rows with 2 1/2 finishing nails straight into the finished surface of the hardwood and then put putty to hide the nail holes. I totally agree with your approach. Nailing the hardwood at an angle into the tongues eliminates the ugly nail holes. Great tip !

Thanks Ken!! So helpful. You and the other video I watched said the same thing. Sounds like the best way to me!! Been doing a lot of flooring lately. This was the 1st hardwood floor I’ve done. I knew someone would have a useful tip for me when I got to this point. Great video!! Thanks for your help!!

I had an idea how to do this and you definitely helped a lot. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this video. I feel more confident in finishing the last rows tomorrow. Thank you.

I've been reading that you should have a 5/8-3/4 inch expansion space between the flooring and walls. If you put the boards tight to the wall, will the boards buckle due to not being able to expand?

My only thought here is that on the final run where you're "against the wall," you're supposed to leave a gap between the flooring and the wall of 1/4" to 1/2". 1/2" risks having it show under the base molding, but in any case, the nails would have to be at the extreme edge of the flooring to be covered by the base moulding, unless you put the flooring right up against the wall (which is not correct). I put the nails far enough inward that they aren't at risk of tearing out of the wood or splitting it, then I tap them down below the wood surface and cover with wood filler.

A nail set works much better then a punch in my opinion. The nail set has a concave shape that hugs the nail head tight and allows you to sink it just below the surface. An inexpensive and worthwhile tool to have when doing the last rows like you’re showing.

Shannon, it is Natural Maple seconds (therefore, lots of character but short pieces) that I got on sale at Lumber Liquidators at their store in Greensboro, NC. I wanted Natural Hickory, because it's harder, but this Natural Maple was at a big sale price that fit my budget. So I loaded up!

Hey Ken! How long do you wait for leaving your hardwood floor in the room before you start the job? Do you open all boxes and lay all the pieces on the floor for getting the same humidity of the room? Thanks nice video.
@mnspeed1932
@mnspeed1932 2 жыл бұрын
Very good point! I had my flooring in the room a few days before I started. I'm not sure what the minimum is, but enough so, as you mentioned, everything can be the same temp and humidity.

I have 3,4,5 & 6in to put in. Would you recommend gluing 5&6in down? I was told it would cup if just nailed.
@mnspeed1932
@mnspeed1932 3 жыл бұрын
It would be hard to glue, because you should be putting your floor over some kind of backing where gluing won't work.
