I watched you doing the cutting under with a modern multi tool, I just remember I did it with a panel saw over 20 years ago, people do not realise how to do a good wood floor that looks original. The idea of using old carpet tiles as an under lay is great.

@@darrenfoley8330 More experience would tell you that stable wood in a stable house doesn't move a whole lot. "Leaving a gap" is what manufacturers recommend to avoid liabilities and in a rectangular room is no biggy. It is often, dare I say usually, impractical.

I hope you haven't suffered a headache because that roof material is not part of the structures. It can evaporate into the room air and can cause symptoms, including headaches. Here in Finland, there are very precise regulations on construction, and you couldn't do that here. Otherwise, a really beautiful result and a great job you are doing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I was wondering about this felt myself. Searching for 2mm roofing felt only returns torch-on felt like what is on shed roofs, is this the same stuff or has he used a more modern version without bitumen/asphalt I wonder.. I was looking to pack up a low spot in my floor before putting in laminate so this looked perfect - but the last thing I want is fumes or headaches!

I remember watching two loud-mouthed lager-yobs nail down cheap flooring to several rooms of a house. Every board either bounced or creaked, several cracked within a year and the entire floor looked like a cheap landlord house. A superb job. From leveling the subfloor, using an underlayment that also acts as sound deadening, and--most importantly of all--avoiding the use of thresholds at all doors to create a truly seamless install. But to be fair, this is the bare minimum I've come to expect from you.

Very interesting indeed! We had a floor installed in quite a large house with long runs along the corridors, and we found out 6 months later that the expansion gaps were not big enough. Required a lot of adjustment. Lesson was that the time of year when you have the floor installed is quite important.

Also, the type of wood you use effects expansion. This looked like a factory made floor---solid top on a built up core---and it doesn't move much. Or at least it's no supposed to!

Beautiful job. No-one could ever accuse you of lacking attention to detail! My house here in New Zealand is floored with Mātai, a native timber quite similar in colouring to the material you just laid. The house was built the old way, where the entire floor is installed before the house framing goes on top. It means the floor is under everything and if ever any rooms are changed, the floor is continuous underneath.

Mine are rimu, laid the same Kiwi way. Now 65yrs old, they are a little worn in doorways, a little off level, etc. A good sanding and sealing, and they look amazing! While the new flooring looks great, i wonder what the original floor boards would have looked like restored, and why they were covered... I am really enjoying watching the attention to detail in this restoration. ❤

WOW. If you are going to do a job do it the best you can - my father taught me. I always wanted to be a finish carpenter, and I was for a good while in my younger years but health issues ended that dream. I know from experience a lot about finish carpentry (as opposed to construction carpentry) but this man is a MASTER. I am stuck in my recliner now, after another knee surgery and I am in awe as I binge on New Yorkshire Workshop videos.

Fantastic!! Truly looks amazing - Just a word of caution for anybody looking to do something similar - In an old house there are often / nearly always, loads of pipes running around the place that in time will need to be accessed to repair leaks or wiring that needs to be checked or amended etc. I can't tell you the amount of times we have had to lift floorboards in an emergency over the last fifteen years. if our flooring had been as beautiful as this we would have just cried taking a multi-tool to it! An alternative options might be to consider replacing the originals and not having interlocking boards and using period style nails to fix - potentially more draughty I know and a slightly different look but still can look lovely with less drama in the future. I hope this doesn't come across as negative.- I really do love the look and great job / attention to detail - cheers.

The problem is that most home owners expect craftsmanship from tradesmen. There is a big difference between a craftsman and a tradesman. A craftsman will do champagne work but you won't get away with paying him cider money.

I don’t know who or where you have learnt your career from, but who ever has taught you or has been your boss to show all this to you needs a praise and you also need a praise for learning it patiently and doing your work patiently without literally cutting corners! The local government should give you all refurbishment jobs in the government buildings or mansions that are open for visits that need refurb or protecting the current classic floorings. I hope you also pass on this trade to your children or to new apprenticeships in the way you know how to do things. It can be a pain but someone has gone through t to show and teach you and the trade at this quality needs to continue after you too. If only there was flooring competitions with a prise of funding you could do soo much more with this!

It's been many a long year since I assisted at laying wood flooring, but what we did, which I don't see here, is using a knee brace to help jam the plank tight up against the three or four that have just been laid. I don't know if that's even done these days.

Małe pomieszczenia, niewypoziomowane i pozapadane, skomplikowane kształty, mnóstwo docinania... Senny koszmar każdego parkieciarza! Mimo wszystkich przeszkód zrobione przepięknie, jednak pracy też wymagało do cholery. Osobiście darowałbym sobie cokoły przy ścianach, w tak małych pomieszczeniach będą przytłaczać. Osobiście styk ściany i parkietu zrobiłem u siebie elastycznym akrylem, pomalowałem ściany i wygląda to bardzo dobrze - nic się nie kruszy, nic nie pęka. Jest OK.

You were right to use wood to level the floor. I used the leveling compound and I ended up having to pull up the floor to replace the leveling compound because it cracked and made a awful noise when walked across

You didn't prime the sub floor, or used the wrong latex or, there was movement in the floor covering.
