Winter is coming. I prioritise installing a wood burning stove at my off grid cabin.
Welcome to the channel of a bumbling Englishman who is trying to learn how to build mad cabins In an attempt to start a tourism business in the Cotswolds of the UK. So, subscribe and stick around because I have absolutely no idea what I will make, or what will happen 😂

Looks lovely! I would definitely recommend installing a carbon monoxide detector, given that you have a fire in a small confined space.

The music stops and the wooden toggle slips down the roof. Thankyou. I enjoyed that silly editing detail.

Awesome! Not a bad first installation for a wood stove. Another option if you don’t want to go through the roof is going through the wall. The floo goes up then goes at an angle into the wall.

Greetings from Arizona. I’m just an elder sort of woman living in a tiny town slightly north of the Surface of the Sun. We do get winters here. (I love that part) I agree with the kindly woman from Mississippi. I think I’d build a box around the flue to support and redistribute the weight that the board you cut holds. I’m just the lady who normally watches your videos (so happily) while my chickens run around. Be Blessed! ❤️

Thank you for calling me kindly--made my day. Although I'm not a builder, I am a quilter so I believe that various sorts of construction mirror one another. I''d never chop a big hole across the middle of a quilt seam and then ignore it--to me, that's kinda what he has done, and it's the sort of thing that makes stuff fail under stress. Love Arizona, by the way--for a short time, I lived in Cochise County and I still remember the beauty of the desert.

@@zzydny I am so glad to have made your day! I am a crafter. Crochet, sewing, weaving, various things as inspiration comes. I was thinking much the same thing - supporting the beam with a square or something like it, for the same reason you made about cutting a hole in a seam. The structure needs to be stable and strong. My daughter and I are raising chickens. We built a coop out of a greenhouse, an old headboard, some cull lumber, a collection of hardware… so far, the girls love it. We’ve repurposed a lot of things to make our garden spaces, too. We aren’t builders, either. We make things work. I think that’s part of the reason I love watching Jacob build. Good Lady zzydny, I wish you good health and many blessings.

What a lovely load of replies! I agree with all of you that’s why I have since fixed my mistake and added to the structure in the roof, the weight is now redirected to other beams either side of that one. I was on a mission to finish it all for the video 😂 That will teach me to rush a job just for the video! I would love to visit Arizona one day, it sounds like a beautiful set up you have been making for your family 😊 (and chickens!)

Now, I admit that I am just an old lady from Mississippi and I do not build such things as buildings nor do I undertake renovations; however, I have to say that I am more than a little worried by your cutting of what appears to be structural support for your roof. If I were to do something like this, I would have built a bit of a box round the hole for the flue so that the two ends of that beam were connected and the weight would be redistributed so that unfortunate events might be avoided in future. But, as I said, I am no expert; I can only mention that I would not want to be inside that hut in a storm.

I look forward to seeing your new cabin build. Plan ahead and have a helper. That extra pair of hands will be useful! I did very much enjoy watching you kayak down the river, (do you and your fiancee still live in the barge), picking up trash. Beautiful wood stove!

The fire place looks nice. It would look even better if it wasn't 28.3° C (I converted it from Fahrenheit) outside. LOL I'm inside with AC. We haven't seen much of the inside layout. I do like the little porch on the cabin. I would love to stay a few nights there. I'll have to start saving my pennies. 🙄

Glad to see another video! If I wasn't across the pond I'd offer my services for meals and lodging. You considering Wifi, or is this to get away from such trappings? If it's a possibility I'd say just put it in the "public building" closest to the service line.

Jacob all I can say is Oops you better hope that you don't have any heavy snow fall's in the future as you may find a big dip in your roofing and the fire won't be much good with a gaping big hole above it 😉. Out of curiosity where did you get the fire etc from and how much? Reason I ask is I'm in need of one just like this for my workshop and it's not been easy finding anything of that size. P.s I thought you wasn't supposed to be lifting anything at this moment due to the surgery 😕.
@JacobHarrell
@JacobHarrell 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I have since re-made it so it’s structurally sound! Heavy lifting was not allowed that’s true but this video was filmed in the past, I’m just getting back to more heavy lifting now :)

You don’t really show what your doing, ie the seal on the roof or the hop hat or how high up it went or how the flu joins, other than that it’s well put together video 👍
