Installing an LG Soundbar

In this video, Bob Kovacs shows how to install an LG LAS465B soundbar, which includes a wireless subwoofer. The steps are pretty easy, and everything fired up working fine.

I never plugged in an optical cable until this :) I got the SH5B which is the 320w 2.1 version, and the sound is just freaking insane. $179 was the price, and i had a Klipsch Computer Speaker set on my cart, ($179, and 100w), and to compare the two would be like comparing an apple to a train. Thanks! I was really surprised at the quality of sound with this LG soundbar. I expected it to be better than the TV's crappy sound but the soundbar sounded great with music from my cell phone. And since an optical cable comes packaged with the soundbar and my TV has the optical port, might as well use the optical connection. Couldn't be easier! Liked and subbed! Great, simple and straight to the point contents on your channel is what most tech watchers need. I just bought an lg sl4 300w soundbar and connected it to optical out of my windows PC. Installed apo equiliser application activated digital output support in it and tweaked its frequency like a V shape. Kept the soundbar profile on standerd and all other parameters on default. This soundbar now works like a high end one..great highly satisfying but smooth bass, very good sweet treble, good vocal.. mesmerizing sound!! I recommend lg soundbar fo computers (windows) rather than for TV's.

Thanks... but I have some bad news for you. The soundbar in this video is an LG LAS465B, and it is not exactly the same as an SJ3. The LAS465B has buttons that protrude on the back that mate with the metal bracket. The SJ3 does not have those buttons. Other than explaining that, I do not have any other advice for you. Depending on how you want to mount your SJ3, you might get some strip metal from a hardware store and make your own mounting brackets.

Hi there Bob, awesome video. Im thinking about mounting it on the wall, but my soundbar didnt came with a mounting bracket, ive already searched and i can purchase it, thats not the issue. My issue is that i cant understand where the mounting bracket is supposed to "grab" the SoundBar on its behind since i cant see no screws or dents where its supposed to attach to the mounting bracket. Can you help me? Forgive me if my English is not the best, im portuguese!

My LG soundbar (the one I show in the video) has two knobs on the back that fit into holes on the metal bracket. The two knobs are near the center on the back, about 100mm apart. Hope that helps!

Hello, how did you actually put the sound bar on the bracket? My model doesn't have notches to go into the holes. Is that just how it is or is it faulty?

The bracket is just as I show it in this video. The bar itself has two nubs that stick out the back. These nubs to into the holes on the bracket -- you then lift the bar up and over to lock the sound bar in place, as I show in the video. Is yours an LG sound bar? I have a Sony sound bar that has slots on the back of the sound bar -- I had to supply the screws to fit in the slots in order to mount the Sony sound bar.

Hmmmm... I don't know the answer to that, Tyler. I have my TV's speakers off, so I can't say if they are in sync or not. I can understand why they might not be in sync: Converting analog audio in the TV to a digital optical signal takes a tiny bit of time and the soundbar converting it back to analog audio takes a tiny bit of time, and that adds a delay. So my gut feeling is that there is no easy way to get the two (analog speakers and digital optical feed to the soundbar) in perfect synchronization. You would somehow have to delay the analog audio inside the TV, and that seems like it would cost more than a $400 TV is worth.

I don't know what may be different with your Hisense TV. I'm still using the same Hisense TV in this video, and I only had to adjust that setting once. Both the TV and the soundbar still work together very well.

I'm sure that if an under-the-TV mount did not fit with the bracket, that the mount could be modified to work with the bracket. I do that sort of thing all the time, but don't know if you have the tools and skills to do it. A piece of strap steel from Home Depot and some screws/nuts should work nicely.

I used #10 screws, 1-inch long. If you're in the metric world, it's probably 4mm x 25mm. I would go no bigger than a #12 (3/16-inch diameter).

Hi Bob I have a problem with my Soundbar, I connected my Soundbar with optical cable with the soundsync funcion so I can control de volume with the Magic control but when I use it to low or hight the volume doesnt sound nothing, instead I have to use the Soundbar control. John, can you leave your soundbar turned up? In my case, my TV's remote control works both the sound bar and the TV (my TV is a Hisense... it's the one I show in the video). This works perfectly for me, but some brands probably only work the TV and not the sound bar.. So is it possible for you to just leave the sound bar turned up all the time? That way, you adjust the volume on the TV and it will then vary on the sound bar. Other than that, I have no advice. Good luck!

I don't think this particular soundbar is intended to be used in a surround system. However, LG and others make surround systems that include soundbars. If you don't already have a soundbar, I'd go with one of those.

I put my subwoofer behind the TV... there's plenty of room on that stand. If your TV is on the wall, I'd put the subwoofer on the floor below the TV if possible. Otherwise, it's hard to give advice without knowing your arrangement.

I bought the model without the sub in the UK and didn't come with that bracket. Which was annoying as I bought the brackets to mount it to the tv. I then had to buy the small bracket separately. Wasn't too pleased. Didn't come with an optical cable either. Thankfully I had two already.

Hello I got this surround of someone and the surround bar works but the subwoofer just blinks green I disconnected the cord and plugged it in it just goes straight to a blinking green no red light to know if it’s off and it’s doesn’t stay in a solid green all it does is blink I know is pairing but never connect to the bar :/

Hi, Joe! BTW, I used to live on Staten Island, many years ago. I am not familiar with either your TV or your soundbar. However, if the soundbar makes sound, then it is connected to the TV properly. So my guess is that you either have not turned up the subwoofer on the soundbar's remote control (or possibly on some other semi-hidden control), or the subwoofer is broken. The soundbar I show in this video can control the sub's volume from the remote, and it is quite easy to turn the sub all the way down. That is the place to start for you. Good luck!

Anda, the bracket came with the soundbar, in the same package. The soundbar has two plastic "buttons" that extend slightly from the back. Those buttons fit into the slot on the mounting bracket. Good luck!

I have a Dynex 46 inch TV that has one rca output plug in the back, and I just bought the same sound bar in your video. I didn't know my TV didn't have an optical input . is there any way to hook this up or am I out of luck ?

There's three ways to connect the LG soundbar: 1. Optical. You do not have this. 2. 3.5mm stereo audio connector, the same sort of jack that you plug headphones into. 3. Bluetooth (wireless) You say your Dynex TV has a single RCA connector on the back. How is that connector labeled? If there are two RCA connectors labeled "Audio Left/Right" that will work. You will need an RCA to 3.5mm adapter cable, which you can get at a Best Buy or Walmart for a few dollars. However, if you have only a single RCA connector, it's probably not an audio output. Check again and see how it is labeled. Finally, look in your TV's manual to see if it has Bluetooth. If it does, follow the instructions for the TV and soundbar to connect using Bluetooth. If your TV does not have optical or analog audio output, and it doesn't do Bluetooth, then you are out of luck. Hope this helps!

Yes, definitely. If you mount this on Sheetrock, you will need good sturdy drywall wall anchors. I would pick something that's good for holding 15 pounds, and use two of them. This weighs much less that 15 pounds, but you want to have a good safety margin.

Hi, Bob. I know it's been a while since you created this video but I have a 7-8 year old Sharp LCD TV with no optical connection available. Can I connect another way or will I just need another TV? There is a USB connection on the soundbar but I can't seem to make that work.

My soundbar -- the one I show in this video -- does not have a USB port. It has only an optical port and a 3.5mm analog jack. The optical port looks a little like a USB port, so I wonder if that is what you are seeing. There are three ways to connect to this soundbar: Optical (which is digital), analog using the 3.5mm jack, and Bluetooth. If your Sharp set does not have an optical port, and it does not have analog audio outputs, and it does not have Bluetooth, then you are out of luck. If you have one of those things, you should be able to make it work. Good luck!

I don't know what the function of the USB port would be. I suppose it is possible that it's to plug in a cell phone, and the USB port could charge the phone as it plays music digitally into the soundbar. The soundbar that I install in this video is an LG LAS-465B, and it has no USB port. But yes... if your TV does not have an optical port, or analog audio out, or Bluetooth, or the mysterious USB connection, then it sounds like you will need a new TV. Getting a new soundbar won't help -- the problem is that your TV has no output suitable for *any* soundbar. You have to be able to get the sound out of the TV somehow.

I just want to use this soundbar with my Bluetooth on my iPhone for music. The soundbar works, but I feel like the sub-woofer (which is also plugged into the wall) isn't doing anything? Am I doing something wrong?

Amy, I used the sound bar to play music from my phone via Bluetooth, and it worked well. The sound bar has a remote, which has both overall volume controls and woofer volume controls. The woofer volume is located below the general volume up/down -- the buttons say "Woofer Level +" and "Woofer Level -". Try those to see if it increases the level of bass. Is the subwoofer located close to the sound bar? It probably should be within 20 feet, and closer is better. You probably have it close, but I thought I'd mention it.

I hooked mine up and the first night. I hooked it up exactly like you did and it worked perfectly just like you said. I have a Vizio TV and could control the sound from my TV's remote. Went to bed and cut the TV off and next day it wasnt working cut the soundbar on and now I can not for the life of me get My TV remote to control the soundbar and I hate it now I have to have 3 remote's because I also have the Fire TV Stick! Any idea why it stopped working!

Sorry, no I don't know what the problem might be. Everyday, I use the TV & soundbar combination I show in this video, and the combo has worked perfectly for 2+ years. It really is an excellent system. All I can think of is that a setting in your TV changed. You should go through the TV's audio settings and see if there is one that allows its external audio feed to be controlled from the remote. It sounds like the problem is in the Vizio TV, not the LG soundbar.

I also have a Hisense TV that I use with this sound bar. As you see in the video, I connected the soundbar to the TV using the optical cable -- just plug the cable into the optical port on the soundbar and into the optical port on the back of the TV. Go into the TVs menu and tell it to turn off the internal speakers. Using the TVs remote to turn the sound up on the TV, make sure the LG soundbar is on and use the soundbar's remote to turn the sound up on the soundbar. Once you get sound, put the LG soundbar's remote away and use only the TVs remote. That works perfectly for me.

Sorry, Kimberly, I didn't see this until right now. Finding the right menu item on my Hisense TV was easy, but you may have a different model. My model number is 50H7GB1. If you give me your model number, I will see if I can find the manual online and figure out the steps to turn off the internal speakers.

You can only connect Bose speakers to this LG soundbar if the Bose has Bluetooth capability. This LG soundbar connects to its subwoofer using Bluetooth, so that is the only way to connect to an external speaker. And that will only work if the Bose speaker has a compatible Bluetooth system.

I'm not familiar with Nordmende TVs -- I've used soundbars with a Hisense TV (in this video) and a TCL TV (in a video I made showing the installation of a different soundbar). Both had a menu selection to turn off the internal speakers. I can't promise you that your Nordmende TV has such a selection, or that it will allow you to raise/lower the volume once you get it connected. All I know for sure is that both my TVs -- the only two TVs I've tried -- let me connect and control sound bars. Good Luck!

The soundbar I have (an LG LAS465B) has built-in knobs on the back of the bar that fit into the holes/slots in the bracket that I installed. I have only installed this one model of soundbar from LG, so I have no idea how other soundbars from LG attach. (I have installed a couple of Sony soundbars, and they have different methods of attachment.) It's too bad that KZbin doesn't let us share photos here, because I could take a picture of what I have and show you how it works.

I don't think that the LG soundbar I have has a reset button or procedure. I just plugged it into my TV (as I show in the video) and it worked. I still have this soundbar 6+ years later, and it still works great. I use it every day.

No, the sound comes from the optical (or analog) port on the TV to the optical (or analog) port on the soundbar. The sound must come from the TV. If you have a DVD player, it feeds the TV and the TV feeds the soundbar. Some people will have both a set-top box and a DVD/Blueray player, and the only way to get sound from both onto the sound bar is to feed the set-top box and DVD player to the TV, then feed the TV to the soundbar. Hi Bob, Thanks for your quick response. All I did was unplug everything and start over. I followed your instructions, reset the sound through the TV then turned of the TV speakers and it started working. I have the sound for my TV/Blu rays and cable coming through the soundbar. The only thing that isn't currently working is when I plug my ipod in to play music. I'm changing the option over to USB for USB connection but still nothing. Do you know what could be the issue here?

I'm not an Apple guy, but you should be able to connect the iPod using either the 3.5mm analog audio jack, or use Bluetooth. I connected my Android cell phone to this soundbar with Bluetooth and it worked perfectly. This LG soundbar does not have any USB connectivity as far as I know.

The LG soundbar shown in this video does not have an HDMI connection. The only ways to connect this LG soundbar is by analog audio (3.5mm connector), digital optical connector, and bluetooth. If the TV has one of those three, you can connect it to this soundbar. LG may make other soundbars with HDMI connection, but not this one.

I do not notice any delay with the subwoofer -- it seems perfectly synchronized with the audio from the soundbar. And the subwoofer does not have any connections on it. All I can do is plug it into a power outlet.

Hi, Michael! It looks like that LG TV has no way to connect to the LG soundbar in this video. I'm not familiar with the Sony Playstation 4, but its specs says it has an "Aux" connector and that it does Bluetooth. Sony's specs do not say what the Aux connector does, but if it does audio, you can connect it to the 3.5mm input on the LG soundbar. If the Playstation Aux connector is not for audio, then try connecting the Playstation to the LG soundbar using Bluetooth. If that doesn't work... you're out of luck. There are no other ways to connect it.

Is there no 3.5mm audio jack output? Or a left/right pair of RCA connector outputs? (You can get an adapter cable that goes from RCA to 3.5mm connector.) If it doesn't have either of those, you can check to see if it has Bluetooth... the LG soundbar will connect with Bluetooth. If your LG TV does not have any of those things, you are out of luck. Those are the only ways to connect to the soundbar.

If you have the manual for your TV, look up the features in the manual. Otherwise, get the model number off the back and look it up on the Internet. The manual should be out there somewhere. FWIW, I have a 32-inch Samsung TV and it has an optical connector on the back. I connected it to the LG soundbar via the optical port and it works fine.

The subwoofer connects wirelessly, either using Bluetooth or some other wireless technology. If your subwoofer uses the same technology, it will work. Otherwise, it won't work. The soundbar itself has no physical connector for a subwoofer.

Probably not. You could probably use analog audio outs from a TV and plug that into the "Port" jack on the LG soundbar. The LG soundbar also has Bluetooth and worked perfectly with wireless audio from my cell phone. If your TV has Bluetooth, you could probably connect it wirelessly. I'm a little old school, and prefer wired solutions to wireless whenever possible. In my experience, a wired connection is more reliable than a wireless connection. The soundbar's manual said that the sound quality is best with the optical connection, and an optical cable came with the soundbar, so I figured I might as well use it. Since I installed it a month ago, the soundbar has worked perfectly. All I need to control it is my TV's remote, and I don't have any additional steps to operate the soundbar. Very pleased so far.

There is no installation hardware for the subwoofer... it just sits on the floor, or in my case it sits on the TV stand behind the TV. Other than being plugged into a power outlet, there is no wiring or connection associated with the subwoofer. I still use this soundbar every day after 3.5 years of use, and it still looks good and sounds great.

I purchased same soundbar lg sj3. For Bluetooth its sounds great. But for optical cable with tv, sound isnt tat great. Tv sound infact appears louder. Though feel bit of bass with soundbar. And very less functions. What does Bass Boost and Cinema button does... I just feel not much difference. Same with ASC.

This is not an LG SJ3 soundbar in this video -- it is an LG LAS465B soundbar. They may look similar, but it's likely that the SJ3 and LAS465B have different features. I use my LAS465B soundbar almost every day, and it continues to sound good. It is a pleasure to own... I wish I had bought two.

Did you buy the sound bar new in a sealed package? Are you in the US? If the box was not sealed, then parts could definitely be missing. I bought the US version of this product, which comes with the items I show in the video. If you got a sealed box and you are in the US (and it's a for-US-sale version of the sound bar, not an international version), and these parts are missing, you need to complain to the store/dealer/person you bought it from. Just to be sure, look through everything again, including all the pieces of styrofoam, to be sure these parts are not tucked away somewhere.

Your TV needs an optical *output*, not an *input*. If your TV does not have an optical output, then you have to use the analog audio output, which is on RCA jacks. Get a cable that has two RCA male connectors at one end (one for left and one for right) and a male 3.5mm stereo connector at the other end. These cables are really common and sold anywhere electronics items are sold. Plug the RCA connectors into the audio output jacks at the back of your TV and into the "PORT" input on the soundbar. ("PORT" is the name on the LG soundbar. If you have a different brand, you probably have a different name for the input jack.) Good luck!

This is my most-watched how-to video. The perspective must be such that it looks off-center, because it was dead-on in reality. I no longer have this TV stand and now have the soundbar mounted on an oak coffee table. Same installation, really, and the soundbar still works well -- we use this TV and soundbar almost every day to watch a movie or TV show.

Hi, Harley... there are two buttons on my remote control just for adjusting the level of the subwoofer. They are labeled "Woofer Level +" and "Woofer Level -". That's what controls the sub's level on my system. I wish they let us post pictures here, because I'd show you a photo. Hope that helps!

I bought the soundbar that I show in the video, and it did not come with a method to attach it to the TV. If your TV is mounted to the wall, you can install the sound bar under it using the bracket I show in the video -- that bracket came with the soundbar. If the TV stands on a table (like mine does in this video), then you can lay the soundbar on the table in front of the TV. Depending on the TV, that might block some of the screen or the controls, so you may have to boost the TV up by putting blocks of wood under TV's feet.

I think you can install a second subwoofer. I have not tried it, but I think the subwoofer connects via a one-way bluetooth signal -- it should work regardless of how many subwoofers you use, as long as they are the same type.

It looks like that is an discontinued (old) model. It does not have any audio output: no optical digital, no analog and no Bluetooth. Unfortunately, you can't connect a soundbar (or any other audio device) to the LG 43LF51 series TV. If you have a friend who can add an audio jack, that would work. Good luck!

I looked at the back panel online, and it did not have any sort of audio output. However, there are several variations on the model you have, and yours might have an analog audio output. If it does, then connect the TVs analog audio output to the 3.5mm "PORT" jack on the LG soundbar. I hope the salesman is right.

Are you sure that you have an LG LAS465B soundbar (which is what I show in the video)? The LAS465B has two buttons sticking out of the back of the soundbar. Those buttons go into the mounting bracket. If your soundbar is missing those buttons, someone either cut them off or your soundbar is not an LAS465B.

The TV popped up a message that there was no sound, but there was actually sound and the TV's remote controlled it. This was using the optical input on the LG soundbar.

I have mine plugged into the TV using the optical cable that LG supplied, and that has worked perfectly for more than 5 years. I really don't know what is causing your problem. However, it is my long experience that a plugged-in connection (using a cable) is usually more reliable than a wireless connection. If you can use a cable, try it.

You can just unplug the subwoofer from power... that will make it really quiet. The remote control for the soundbar has a separate volume control for the subwoofer, so you can turn it all the way down. Those are the only things I can think of.

My subwoofer is connected (gleen light on and not blinking), but not putting out sound. So I tried to reset it (blinking green) and it's not connecting to the soundbar anymore. What should I do?

Disconnect power from both the soundbar and the subwoofer, then plug both back in. If the light on the subwoofer comes back on and there is still no sound, use the remote control to raise the level of the subwoofer. If that doesn't work... then I have no more advice except to return it to the vendor you bought it from. I've had this LG soundbar in continuous use for more than 4 years, and it still works very well. The soundbar and subwoofer connected automatically with no settings tweaks... it all just worked right out of the box.

So the 50 in Toshiba I have I wish to attach the LG sound bar to..it came with brackets to attached to front of tv..does anyone know if that will work without screwing into anything on this tv..? tv speakers are near end of screen but there could still be wiring running of course... guess I can open it up..thanks. and how did you get tv volume controls to work sound bar?? mine do not!! I have my LG soundbar set to a mid-level volume. In the Hisense TV's menu, I told it to turn off the TV's speakers. Now when I raise the volume on the TV, it actually raises the volume on the TV's optical output. That feeds the soundbar, and it all works nicely. I've been using the exact setup you see in this video for more than 3 years now, and it still sounds & works great.

I wish I had a magic solution for you, but I'm at a loss. It could be that the optical connection is bad at either the TV end or the soundbar end... or the optical cable itself is bad. Or it could be that your Toshiba simply doesn't work like my Hisense. First, make sure that the Toshiba does not have a menu item that activates the optical port. It could be something as simple as that. If that doesn't work, probably the cheapest place to start troubleshooting the problem is to get a new optical cable. A new one from Amazon (called a Toslink or S/PDIF cable) costs $5 or so. If a new cable makes no difference, then the issue is either with your TV or the soundbar. If you can borrow an audio device from a friend that positively has a working optical port, you can then plug that into the soundbar. If the soundbar then works, the problem is with the TV. If the soundbar does not work, then the problem is with the soundbar. Good luck!
