@dekkerlundquist5938 Although very true. I used to be a full time technician and I prided myself on full transparency and having informed customers by explaining the failure and how to prevent it, same as date does which I respect. That being said I got out of the business because of the customers not only is it a very tough business because of "budget minded people " as Dave said here. But also because customers are rarely ready for their vehicles to break and a lot of time give us techs shit becayse of prices. Most of which we have no control of. And you could fix front brakes customer leaves a week later they call back and blame us for a flat in the rear. So yes there are mechanics out there that give us hist ones a bad name. But u just wanted to say the customers in this line of work are very tough a lit of times. And we understand a car failing is a major inconvenience not only time wise but economically. To all the bad mechanics out the honesty in the best policy try it you'll feel better

"Budget minded person" That was a respectful way if saying he didn't want to spend money. Sometimes in our shop, if the client is struggling to pay for repairs, and if the labor to replace parts is already overlapping, we will sell some of those parts they were on the fence on at cost.
@justinstevenson2061

You can always tell when it’s someone who wants to do the work but just can’t afford it, vs the person who’s talking crap just to negotiate or downplay the importance of your suggestion etc. Definitely far more willing to help the first one who genuinely appreciates my advice but just can’t act on it’s. Second person can take it or leave it. I run my business and work hard to make money and support my family, so generally no I mean I can’t “give you a good deal” it’s unfair to others that all pay the standard rate and unfair to myself. But again there’s someone you can really tell is in need and sometimes you just do some extra work to help out while your already there being paid for something (the occasional of these situations are usually extra suggestions noted during the course of work).
@justinstevenson2061
@justinstevenson2061 10 ай бұрын
If like you said you have the bit of extra budget etc in terms of what you’ve already charged, and it’s not a hard job and your partway apart anyways etc.

Do this all the time with my good customers that are struggling. If they're not in a rush I'll even shop around for a much better price instead of just the local few that can deliver same day.

@brentbovee6411 9 ай бұрын
I love the fact that you said " we'll sell them the parts at cost". Why are you marking up the parts on the customer? This is why I started my own shop. I worked for too many scam artists trying to charge customers for nothing.
@CheekyChan
@CheekyChan 9 ай бұрын
@@brentbovee6411 We mark them at list price, which is what the customer would be paying if they bought it themselves anyways, marking up parts to list price helps to cover our overhead, most of the time it's not even a big difference and if it IS a big difference I usually still give the customer a discount. The reason I'm able to get parts at a much better rate than the customer is because I'm a professional and order parts from them daily and buy universal stuff in bulk, I need to OWN a business to do business with a lot of these companies to get my discount, I pass it along when I'm able to but making a living off of just labor alone will not cut it. The customer spends less than if they bought it themselves, I make a little off the top for my time that I spend writing up the amount and shopping for parts to get the customer the best price I can. You might as well stop shopping at literally any store because this is exactly that they do, buy low and sell high to the customer.

Had my car in to replace a diff seal, and they said they'd noticed the ball joint on that side was bad. I grumbled a bit at the added expense, but I knew labor would be minuscule since they already had that axle out and agreed to it. Better now than defer it and pay out for labor later!

We used to replace axles cause dealing with an individual cv joint is a pita,but its come back around again to replacing boots and cleaning and relubing them. Throw a 20$ set of brushes in that alternator or starter imstead of replacing it. Even that, we're back to the parts quality issue again sometimes.

The frame will rust faster now that you washed all the protective grease off of it. I guess that will make it match the rust toward the rear of the frame, L0L. I had the OEM trans cooler lines on my truck leak from rusting thru, so instead of replacing them with another set made of plain steel I fabricated new ones from stainless steel tubing. I needed special dies for my flaring tool to make the GM quick connect ends.

@RussellBooth1977
@RussellBooth1977 Ай бұрын
I would replace the spark plug leads on them with the spark plugs because they get a bit perished because they're right next to the exhaust manifold, the terminals can also rust with age particularly if the vehicle sits out in the weather & that's even with dielectric grease applied to the spark plug boots,one day number 2 spark plug lead just fell off at under the 100,000 kilometres or 60,000 mile spark plug change interval although Holden recommended replacing them at 120,000 kilometres or 72,000 miles, I have noticed that the electrodes are quite worn by 100,000 kilometres The lead just separated from the terminal which is why I opted to buy & fit some 9 millimetre silicone spark plug leads the last time I replaced the spark plugs on my 5.7 litre LS1 V8 engine instead of the 7 millimetre diameter leads. I would want to replace the water pump on an engine rebuild because I had one begin to leak on a DOHC Nissan RB30 engine I built 20 years ago,it worked alright on the SOHC engine but as soon as new coolant was added in the DOHC engine it leaked after a short period of time. I also needed to replace the water pump on the 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine in 2012 when the car was 10 years old because it began to leak coolant after I replaced all of the cooling system hoses then so did the radiator & the heater valve tap. So,if the vehicle is a decade old I found out that everything needed replacing with the hoses, the hose clamps & the coolant including the alloy radiator, the heater valve, the thermostat really should be replaced as well, any T piece fittings, elbows, etc & obviously, the water pump. I had trouble with an eBay water pump where the O ring wasn't fitted properly so I ordered a Japanese made water pump on there which has given me no troubles for the last 12 years but I really need to get in & replace the hoses, etc again. I replaced the radiator 5 1/2 years ago because that radiator that I replaced prior to that began to leak at the side tanks as well !

When we are doing repairs like this (example an engine) a lot of times we won’t charge for any extra labor to swap out new parts that would literally take a second to replace. Examples are like those mounts or the thermostat and water pump and wires cuz it all has to come off anyways. We mainly do it with our loyal customers too so it saves them a bit of money in the long run. Like he said, it wouldn’t make sense not to change those tranny cooler lines for less labor then later once the motor is in and everything is in the way
