This video is legit, only had to watch it twice to nail my first ever bar tape job. No gaps, it is even, not bulky, no embarrassing bar end issues, and I had about about 40 cm of leftover tape on each side. The thumbnail is pretty funny too!

Looked your video up to re-watch specifically before replacing my bar tape today. Thanks for everything on this channel - it's both entertaining *and* informative, and has enabled me to tackle several jobs on my bike I wouldn't otherwise have known how to do, even though I'm a pure roadie who hasn't owned a MTB since about 20 years ago!

Great video, my mechanic has converted me to tape from top to bottom. This works if you have screw in plugs and looks more smooth on top of the handlebars.
@SiopaoSauc34 жыл бұрын
That won't work. The way you rotate your hands especially on the tops will eventually cause the bartape to unwrap itself.
@mattkavanaugh56234 жыл бұрын
Taping from top to bottom would work fine if you wrap in the same direction of rotation around the bars as when you tape from bottom to top.
@wiredrabbit57322 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've done top to bottom for ever.

I do believe that this is the first channel that I've subscribed to after watching exactly one video. It was the gravity break bleed video and I don't even have hydraulic breaks but who knows maybe some day. I would love to see a custom assembly series, I would watch the episodes over and over to try and replicate.

I have started finishing my bar tape early on the top as i got white bars and want them to show more. It is also handy for summer as the bars are cool and keep my hands cooler too if needed. You bike looks so good, the oil slick theme is a great idea.

THANK YOU! I wrapped my first bars after watching this and while they aren't perfect, they are pretty darn good and I didn't spend all day watching how-to videos first. The only issue I had was my tape wasn't overly sticky so the pieces that I put over the shift lever clamps didn't hold the greatest. Next time I might add some adhesive on them.
@sydfixesbikes3 жыл бұрын
That's fairly common. Usually we just let the rest of the tape hold those pieces in place 😁

Just rewrapped my bars for the first time thanks. Idk what the wizards at the factory are doing but they taped my bars with no gaps without that extra piece of tape. I had to re wrap a few times and never could get it perfect but definitely serviceable.
@mattkavanaugh56234 жыл бұрын
Some great tips, especially regarding the direction of wrapping the tape! I have wrapped quite a few handlebars, but this was really good additional knowledge. I have seen videos (but never tried it) of a wrapping technique starting near the stem and wrapping down to the drops. The benefit would be that you don’t need finishing tape, or only one wrap of finishing tape, near the stem. Also, to make the last wrap of bar tape near the stem (if you start at the bar end) as flush as possible it helps to cut the tape at a diagonal (“on the bias”) so it lays flat before applying the finishing tape. I guess if you started the wrapping near the stem, the same diagonal cut would work as well. :). Oh, and if you have larger hands or want a softer feel of the handlebars (nice for gravel riding), a double layer of bar tape is nice.

I'm about to change bar tape on my touring bike and I'm a bit scared of the process. My bar tape doesn't have the sticky strip on the underside, but I'm assuming that's not a deal breaker.
@sydfixesbikes3 жыл бұрын
Nope, you'll just need to make sure it's wrapped tight so it holds itself in place and then tape off the end well so it doesn't unravel.

@sydfixesbikes4 жыл бұрын
When you purchase bar tape, it includes enough to tape both sides (2 rolls).
@postridebeers2 жыл бұрын
Great video. Two suggestions. Start with the tape tucked inside the bar and you can get a cleaner edge when you insert your bar plug. Cut your bar tape at an angle to get a cleaner/flatter edge where you use your finishing tape.

Can you do a video on -"how to grease shifter/derailluer cables"
@setransou4 жыл бұрын
Just use Rock N Roll Cable Magic lubricant for troubled cables/housing and that’s assuming your routing isn’t fully housed. Not much else to it.

You actually need to do a 8-shaped wrap around the hood and the method you shared only applies to modern hoods with large gummy covers.

That tape looks boss. Is it slippery when your hands get sweaty/wet though? Also remember that there’s many ways to wrap bar tape, but the only wrong way is the way you demonstrate doing it in a video you post on the internet. That’s always the wrong way.

You should watch our channel trailer (kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5rdqat8jJxgh8k), it explains that the idea behind this channel is that Macky is teaching me to work on bikes. He has a lot more experience working on bikes and until recently did all the bike work for both of us. That's why he's providing advice, suggestions, and teaching me while I actually do the work so I can learn.
