I used to work at Raleigh and this was the method used many moons ago. I still wrap my bars this way and in 40 or so years of bike riding I've NEVER had any problems with tape slipping, water ingress, tape fraying or any of the problems stated in these comments. IF you tape your bars properly in the first place you won't have any problems.

totaly agree, also if we compare to the traditional down-top wrap, the only weak point (given a good and tight wrap) seems to be always the finishing tape

Love this technique. I do it even with the Di2 junction box in the handle bar. You finish it off with a triangular cut (like you would from bottom towards up) but finish it off with super glue. You stick the last bit of the bar tape on itself. You'd think with wet, dirt, etc it wouldn't hold but it holds it perfectly! I even had to undo it before and reglue and was able to without damaging the tape.

This was really helpful, thank you! Just tried the reverse wrap on my Fuji bike and it worked great! I used lizard skins tape, which seems to work really well as it's adhesive backed and also has the beveled edges, which sit really flat. Went for a quick 20 mile test ride and all good. I just learned of the reverse wrap several months ago. I saw a video on a build and the guy wrapped the bar that way. It was a round bar and there were a lot of comments criticizing it. Not sure why as I thought it was a great idea. A couple of months later, I was returning home from a trip with my gravel bike on the back. I guess the rain I rode in on my trip combined with the little bit of rain I drove through caused the tape on my bar tape to come lose. I saw it flapping in my rear view mirror as I drove as it came unwrapped. I put new bar tape on the bike after I got home and reverse wrapped it to hopefully avoid another incident like that. I think it is a great idea and wonder why that hasn't always been them norm.

I just tape normally, and finish it at the top with a small amount of super glue. If you wrap it right, you can simply glue the tape to itself underneath the handlebar, so you don't see where it ends, and isn't bulky. I've been riding mine this way for a few thousand miles without any problems. I use the Canyon tape with the Canyon aero bars.

I really like how clean this looks, but every time I wrap my bars this way, the tape frays/lifts due to pressure on the overlapping seam. Looks totally clean, but I've learned why you DON'T wrap from the top to the end. Looks nice now, but the edges of the tape are pushed on by your hands as they hold the bars going towards the hoods. The edges quickly fray and even tear. That's why you always wrap from the ends to the tops, the edges of the tape are on the outside. Sorry, but that's why you need tape.
@GCPerformance184 жыл бұрын
Im telling you, maybe on some cheaper tapes or like a leather tape but on like a nice tape like supacaz or those hd tapes the sticker tacky tape, it doesnt happen, just make it tight enough and tacky side on the bottom and your good to go, now if your just pushing on it constantly and struggling to keep yourself up then yea its going to move but a normal riding position like on the hoods or the bullends of the bar or the drops you dont have to worry

Everything old is new again. I've taped bars this way since the 1970's. I guess we all did. In fact, if I'd had to wrap electrical tape to finish the job, I'd have called it a garbage job. Keep in mind though that the tape I used then was just tape with no padding. As such, pulling tightly when wrapping was enough to avoid significant ridges . I will admit though that with the padded stuff we get today, it feels much nicer when on the drops to follow the electrical tape method, If you don't wear gloves . Ending at the plugs technique is just one of those things that the new experts tell you to " never do ". Just as they told you that narrow high pressure tires are faster ,and high cadence is the only way to go, and always strive to pedal in circles . All of these have now been re-evaluated. Basically do what works best for you seems to be the current attitude . By the way, I once heard that Alberto Contador always taped his bars ending up at the plugs.
@GCPerformance184 жыл бұрын
Yea man, that’s crazy!! Good info, but yea I mean when I started working at the shop the thing to do was to run 700x19 or 21c tires pump them up to 120-130 (I ran 140) somethings, and now it’s all 25 or 28s or even 30s running at 80-100 psi. Crazy to me

I know electrical tape is the most common way everyone finishes off the wrap job but not me. I use wax twine. Every electrical tape shifts and comes loose, it's just the glue doesn't hold well especially if you live in a warmer climate. The wax twine comes in any color you want from Amazon and if you know how to install it it will stay put and never ever loosen.

How to so with my di2 junction box at the end of the bars??

so i have seen and also have done a little bit of super glue at the end and just put a dab on the tape and the wrap it there, if that makes sense

How do you keep the hydro lines/cables from rattling around in those bars?
@GCPerformance184 жыл бұрын
my secret is I make the cut for the brake line a little long so when I put the shifter on there it pushes the line to the back of the bar and puts tension on it causing it not to move and make like an s shape in there.... lol just alot of tension on the cable and it doesnt rattle at all

@@johnezimmer yea you can undo and redo, there is no problem and the local bike shop has to wrap it so they might just do it stock because its easier way

@@GCPerformance18 That was, by far, the best handlebar taping I've ever done - cheers!
@michaelthompson7277Ай бұрын
Supacaz tape is too short to reverse wrap bars if you want to cover the bars closer to the stem. But I love how clean it looks to reverse wrap. I use 44 or 46mm bars and the ENVY tape is my favorite due to the extra length compared to other brands.

I think they got way cheaper, back in the day they were such nicer quality

can you get both sides of the bar with one roll of bar tape since you're leaving the tops exposed?

no I cant, its very little left after cutting it

@gcperformance its been 1.5 years since you posted this vid originally. Are you still backing the reverse method? Im pretty good at wrapping my bars on my 21 Tarmac Pro but it consistently bunches or gaps form up top. Lots of sweat and humidity in FL. Only use Supacaz tape. Just curious if you are still wrapping reverse like this or have you gone back to bottom up? Thx. Love the vids/channel.

Of course I am!! I still do it to this day and still have the bikes I did this originally. It still holds

3:32 if you're shoving the excess into the bar why does it matter which way it's cut?

because if you cut it the other way, frayed cut peice would be showing instead of the normal uncut tape

What happens if i have a bar end di2 charging port? Also, i have aero bars but want some tape to cushion the bar top. Any tips on that? Thanks for the vid!
@GCPerformance184 жыл бұрын
ive done it for the top of aero bars too and you can start away form the top of the tip on the barn and then work your way up and then use a bar plug on the top of the bar.... works the same thing...... Now for the di2 junction, thats another story..... I feel like i have but I cant think of anything right now...... I think you might be SOL right now, im gonna check at the store tomorrow and see if I can figure something out with everything in front of me.. Ill get back to you :)

Awesome job!! I guess I have just learnt how to do it myself. What a shame the syncros ic sl cockpit from scott doesn't have that recessed part so the tape sits nice and flush with the handlebars. Canyon bikes also have that. I don't see a reason why other manufacturers won't do it like that.
@GCPerformance184 жыл бұрын
idk but it stil works on any bikes without it being recessed, its very clean looking still :)
