I’m a woman in my 50s, and I recently needed to replace some parts on our bi-fold doors. After a bit of research, I discovered that I could get the replacement pieces at Home Depot. However, I still had to figure out how to install them. I watched a few KZbin videos, but they weren't very clear. Then I found your video. You made the process so easy and straightforward! After struggling with other videos, I was able to fix the doors in just 20 minutes, thanks to you. I really appreciate it!

Thanks for posting this video. It was well done. I'm replacing old doors, but one problem I had was that the doors wouldn't stay 100% closed. They stuck out just a little bit at the hinge point. I suspected the quarter-round molding at the edge might be causing binding, and that appeared to be it. As soon as I pulled it off, the doors stayed flat when closed.

I keep having trouble with one of my doors, bought my first house 18 months ago and I never had them before. I just learned by watching your video that I'm missing a piece! My wheel does not have a pin to attach to in the track and the door pops out once in awhile. Countless times I've checked the track, the hardware, removed the door to add height to the door (like you did at the end to fix the height) so the wheel is tall enough to stay in the track, but now I FINALLY know what's wrong, so thank you!!

I didn’t notice that until I had hammered the top and bottom pin in. @TheHomeImprovementChannel Жыл бұрын
Sometimes the doors will "hop" along the track when you open and close them. The doors could be in a bind or something to cause that. You'll have to look them over to see if you see anything like that going on. You can usually adjust the door by the moving the pin mount that is in the upper left or right corner depending which door you're working on. Let me know if you have a specific question.

HI, you can use it if it's in good shape and it's the same width as the new one that came with the doors. It'll matter since the rollers in the new door are made for a specific width of track. As long as they're the same there shouldn't be any problems.

Video is very detailed and clear. What about if you have tile (ceramic) floors? I'm building a closet from scratch I hope everything goes well..
@TheHomeImprovementChannel2 жыл бұрын
Hi.. With tile, I usually skip the bottom screw and just use the two that go in the side... U can use a hammer drill, but you'll run the risk of cracking a tile.. It's not worth it! As long as those side screws have wood to bite into, you should be fine.

With this video I confirmed that whoever installed the bi-fold doors in my new rental apartment has NEVER seen an aligner. This person installed them, in BOTH doors, intertwined and bent, like they were some kind of internal latch that didn't do anything but make the doors clash everytime you closed them. I KNEW something was completely wrong with them. I didn't even know what the aligners were, so I took a picture, asked Google Images and it identified the pieces name. With the name I found this video and now I know what they are for and I fixed the doors myself. Thank you! And yes, these needed AN aligner (not two smh).

Thank you for this video…very helpful. My only question is ideally do I purchase doors the exact width of the open space to the closet or should i aim for doors an inch shorter?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel4 ай бұрын
HI, you would purchase doors the exact width of your space... For example if your space is 48" you would purchase (2) 24" doors. The actual measurement of a 24" door is 23 3/4". Between both doors you'll have 1/2" of space. Now if you have an irregular size opening; for example if your opening is only 47", you'll have to rip a little off both sides of each door to make it fit. I've had to do that several times in the past to make it work... Hope that helps.

When screwing the bottom bracket to the wood floor, are you afraid of inhibiting the wood flooring's natural movement when it expands and contracts? Also, how would you install trim around the door inside the closet? Thanks for posting, very helpful
@TheHomeImprovementChannel2 жыл бұрын
HI Ben... No i'm not afraid of inhibiting the floor. The floor is actually stapled with several staples per piece, so a couple of screws wouldn't do much. I usually don't attach the bottom screw. The ones on the sides are more than enough. Not to say you can't use the bottom screw. There's no reason why not. However, if you're on a laminate or floating floor, I actually don't recommend using the bottom screw. There's no need for trim in this case since the drywall is finished around the inside of the opening all the way around. Sometimes these closet doors can be lined with 1x6 that's ripped to 4 1/2 (Using 2x4's and 1/2" drywall) and then door casing around the outside perimeter. But if there's already drywall there its not necessary, or will it fit since you'll be closing the opening by 1 1/2". I hope that helps..

@raananmoshe8822 Жыл бұрын
Hi Ruddy, Can you explain what to do when the floor isn't level? about 1" difference between the left side and right side of the opening. The most important thing is that the top should be leveled, correct?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel Жыл бұрын
Wow! That's a huge difference. Yes it would look better if the tops were even. If the door on the low side can't be adjusted enough to match where the top is, I would put the L bracket at the bottom on a small block of wood under the bracket. If it can be anchored on the sides into wood that would be sufficient (unless the floor is wood, then I would use the screw down into the wood too). If it's sitting on concrete, you can sub out a piece of plastic so there's no problem with wood rot or put a small piece of tar paper between the concrete and the wood. I hope that makes sense.
@livingthedream19642 ай бұрын
Is that bottom pivot joint that includes a tapered spline pin and a toothed bottom pivot bracket robust to easily getting out of adjustment? Seems like someone could pull up on the knob to clear the bottom of the door from a pile of dirty laundry and unintentionally force an annoying readjustment. Your quick adjustment at 10:43 proves my point. My obsolete 1980’s version had a plastic bushing in a slot in the bottom pivot bracket adjustable with a bolt and nut, nicely locked down. It had a straight pivot pin with decent engagement in the plastic bushing. My old version had a severe bend at the track due to fallout from a bad square slider design (rather than a wheel), but no issues with the bottom pivot interface.
@TheHomeImprovementChannel2 ай бұрын
HI! Honestly I've never, ever had to re-adjust a door once you have it set where you want it. Not saying it doesn't happen, but I've never seen one move. You'd have to pick up on the door quite a bit to make it do that... 😊
@livingthedream19642 ай бұрын
@@TheHomeImprovementChannel My idea to use a combo of the new upper pivot and new roller, and the original stock lower pivot and bracket (lightly worn) was a bad idea. Hi, thanks for the video. I'm installing these in my basement with a cement floor. What do I need to do differently to mount that bottom pivot bracket when drilling/screwing into concrete? Like you said the screws are pretty weak, so which ones should I buy instead?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel Жыл бұрын
Most of the time on concrete the bottom screws are just left out. Especially if you can get a good bite into wood on the sides. If you feel you really need a screw on the bottom, you'll need a hammer drill and some TAPCON screws to anchor it down.. You might try a little longer screws on the sides if you have to go through drywall first.

@TheHomeImprovementChannel3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you need to be at least 1/2" or so behind where the framing starts. You could do an experiment with some screws to see where the screws are biting good and use that line for your track. The track should cover any misc screw holes that weren't working if you wind up with any. Also measure the door to make sure you're at least back as far as 1/2 the door width to make sure your doors aren't sticking out. I hope that makes sense.

My closet opening is 80" H x 84" W. What size bifold would I need to get in order for this to work? I can't seem to find 42"W doors to get two.
@TheHomeImprovementChannel2 жыл бұрын
HI, unfortunately that's an odd size. The doors you can readily get are usually like 18, 24, 30, 36 doors. OF course none of those combinations will work with an 84 opening. You can either close up the opening to 72 so that you can use 36" doors, or I believe if you google custom size bi-fold doors there are companies that'll make the doors any size you need. They'll probably be on the expensive side, but I think you can get them if you don't know how to do drywall and all the stuff needed to shrink the opening. I hope that helps.

Is that considered 2 24" tracks or 1 48" track I've seen both for sale. Thanks
@TheHomeImprovementChannel5 ай бұрын
HI... Either one will work. In this example it's (2) 24" tracks that came with 2 individual doors...

I purchased a condo with a two panel bi-fold door for master bathroom. For some reason it isn't balanced and won't close all the way. It closes about 3/4 the way. Any suggestions?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel2 жыл бұрын
Is the door rubbing at the top when it reaches a point where it won't close? Or rubbing at the bottom? You'll have to look around the door to see why it won't close all the way. If it's rubbing at the top, you'll have to loosen the pivot point at the top corner and adjust it out just a little or the opposite if it's rubbing at the bottom. Also check the wall to the left or right of the door depending which side it's on and make sure the door isn't rubbing on the wall. This will keep it from closing too. If it's rubbing there you can lift the door to bring the pivot out a little at the bottom and loosen the screw at the top and adjust the top to be even with the bottom. Then tighten the screw back. There's not much else that would keep it from closing.

Not many beginners will have a long level. How about measuring from the back wall? Very informational, good job.
@TheHomeImprovementChannel2 жыл бұрын
Great suggestion! Yes that would work..Or just find the center where the door is going to go and keep it consistent the whole way... just in case the relationship between the wall where the doors go and the back wall isn't exactly the same..

You can also use a plumb line. If you don’t have one, you can make a simple one from tying string to the eraser end of a pencil or the handle of a screwdriver, esp if it has a hanging hole. Hold the string at the center of the top rail at the wall edge, and once it stops swaying, your homemade plumb will point toward the center of where the bottom rail should go! (Was a farm kid who saw my dad and grandad do lots of tweaks like this! 😂)

Awesome video...I have a problem installing my doors. My opening is 80 inches tall can I shave the door down a bit on both ends or is that not recommended. I can't find a door that fits 77inch is to small and 79 seems too tight. Thanks a bunch
@TheHomeImprovementChannel3 жыл бұрын
HI. Shaving will take 10 years! You can rip the doors with a saw. Just be careful how much you cut off. I am not entirely sure how thick the wood is around the perimeter of the door is. I'd guess 3/4" or so. If you cut beyond the blocks of wood around the door, you will find in most cases the door is hollow after that. So yes you can definitely cut a bit off of there. Depends how much you need. IF you need an inch, I recommend cutting a 1/2" from the top and bottom.

How would you put baseboards around the bottom of the doors?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel Жыл бұрын
It's hard to explain but you will have to stop the baseboard short once it goes around the corner and make sure to leave enough room to clear the door. At the end of the baseboard, I'll usually cut a little 22.5 degree bevel for aesthetics..
@ramirez3683 жыл бұрын
well....in my case the opening is too big and the doors are like 3 and 4 inches short on each end and I could not find the size need it at home depot or lowes for bifold so do I have to put 2x4 on each end to make the frame opening smaller, is that the best solution??
@TheHomeImprovementChannel3 жыл бұрын
Yes I had that on this particular door opening actually. This opening originally went from floor to ceiling. I think the original doors were 92 or something like that. They do make new doors that are that tall, but if you want to use a regular 80" door, you'll have to bring the height of the ceiling down so that it fits the new size door.. that means a 2x4 frame, drywall, finishing, the works... Hope that helps..

Quick question first time diy..can 78 inch door fit in 80 inch opening...I have an 78 inch height door not sure if that would work if I increase the height from bottom screw
@TheHomeImprovementChannel2 жыл бұрын
Yes it should work. The screw may not be long enough so you might have to put a small block of wood on the floor to hold the door up enough. The standard door is only 79 anyways, so it's a 1" difference.

Our challenge is every closet is an odd width. Can louvres be hung outside the closet when everything standard is too narrow or too wide?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel Жыл бұрын
Do you mean the whole doors outside the closet? There would be nothing to attach the top rail to... How much of a difference is the door opening to the door? If that's what you were thinking they do make a barn door rail kit that you could use to side the door back and forth on the outside wouldn't look bad. I wouldn't use bifold doors for that though, I'd use a solid door.
@melissamorse9728 Жыл бұрын
@@TheHomeImprovementChannel thanks! Yes I was considering barn door slide hardware. But I can’t find a video that gives confidence to take that approach. 28” doors would work in the 57”/58” widths with extra wood on the sides but 28s don’t come with panels on the bottom…which I’d hoped for.
@TheHomeImprovementChannel Жыл бұрын
What about 30" inch doors? You can rip on a table saw about an inch on each side to make them 28@@melissamorse9728
