How important is line boring a new cam case bronze bushing to match the came bore? I had to install new cam cover on my 87 FXR and bought one ready to bolt on with new seal and oem tolerance bushing. It went on ,but it did not just push on easily like yours did. I had to draw it on with the screws. I was afraid to tap the cover on with a leather hammer in a dead blow. I didn't have the special tool to remove cam and I assume put new cam cover on and line the 2 holes up perfectly .I rode the bike with no issues but wonder if that was a critical step I should have done. I ve since had engine totally rebuilt by A life long pro HD Machine Shop here in W Pa. Guys like yourself ,and the Motorcycle machine shop I use are a dying breed . Who is ever going to pick up all the knowledge you guys possess. Thanks for all your knowledge you share right here on You Tube. I am thinking of picking up an early V Rod with low miles . I know they were never embraced by trad HD guys ,but they are mechanically rock solid drive train from everything I ve read and heard .The new Sportster with the V Rod style motor 120 hp off the showroom floor I think is going to change things up .
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
Okay. Here we go: You had to press the cover on. Something did not align perfectly or was too tight So now the question is: Will it wear in and be just fine? I can't tell you that one. All we can do is assume, because it's running fine, that it's okay. What we don't know is if there is stress on the cam bearing and if one or both of the bushings in the cover was just a little tight. It has probably run in now and is fine, or you can be uncomfortable and take it apart to inspect it.
@gregr16722 жыл бұрын
The motor did run fine so it probably wore in . The engine has since been totally rebuilt for the crank pin being gaulded(rough) . I was just wondering if you were to put a new cam cover on ,would you use the reaming tool or boring bar the Harley Manual recommends .Thanks

I don't know. I've always bought them as a shop. 5 in a bag was okay. Measure for what you need and buy one larger, one smaller, and one just right. Sorry. Couldn't help it. I used to (before I started working in a shop) measure, then go buy three sizes hoping to get what I wanted. I don't know of any suppliers, just shops, that sell individual cam shims.

Did Harley switch away from the tabbed thrust washer? Opened up My 95 softail and it has a single fully circular thrust washer. But I believe the manual has the tabbed one. Nothing else inside indicates aftermarket parts or someone messing with it. Should I order the tabbed version and use it in conjunction with my shim? Installing an ev27.

Late model Evos have huge camshaft endplays and all come with a round cam shim. I usually install the old type shim to replace it and get the endplay the cam manufacturer recommends.

Hi Mike, I am a lttle confused the way you install the tappet screen. In my opinion it must be installed with the closed end upside and an additional spring. So tells every manual at least :-) Greetings from Germany.
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
Different screens for different models. The one in the video is a 65 Panhead. It is an early type. The Cone motor Shovelheads and Evos have a pointed screen which goes in with the point up, then drop the screen on top, over it.

Thanks Efrain
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
It's all a matter of what you want and what you want to spend. I did bunches of them in the past. Your choice on carburetor (S&S or Mikuni HSR42). Cam again, your choice. Read all of the specs and don't go too wild. The mfgrs will tell you what each cam will do. Depending on how many miles are on the bike, you might want to install a new set of valve lifters (good aftermarket set). You'll need a good exhaust system and probably a good aftermarket ignition system. Don't forget, with the new cam, you'll need a set of adjustable pushrods. This is why I don't like to make recommendations. I don't know what you're wanting in the way of performance. I don't know how much money you want to spend and I don't know your level of mechanical skills. But, that's the stuff I would do. Lastly, I don't push brands.

great video. I'm getting ready to do a cam in a 80" evo. Do you prefer the metal breather gear and do you worry about the gear lash with a new cam?
@pacificmike9501 Жыл бұрын
Individual bikes have individual issues. Stock breathers are all fine. We start making changes in the motor. Sometimes we need to figure it out. Mild cam change? Stock breather fine. Stroker? Huge cam? Stop and think it over.

Hi Mike! I’m finally getting around to rebuilding my 98. You answered all of my questions before with great knowledge haha. I’m replacing the stock cam with another used OEM cam. Should the original shim and thrust washer result in the same amount of end play it currently has? First rebuild I’ve ever done, so I don’t have all the extra resources laying around nor the knowledge of what to purchase. Thanks!
@pacificmike95019 ай бұрын
Always check the cam endplay. The factory assembly here is usually a huge endplay. Everyone I know, resets them.

Mike, I own a 98 Evo and just bought an EV27 cam for it. I noticed in the original set up I only had the round thrust washer. With the EV 27 and only the thrust washer there is way too much play. I measured both the old and new cam lenght between shaft ends and there is approx 1/16 length difference. I was told that the EVO 1 had shorter cams than Evo 2 and that aftermarket cams are made for both. Can I simply add a spacer between thrust washer and cam or do I need to do something else?
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
I don't know of such a thing as Evo one and Evo two. I generally install a shim between the cam and the thrust washer. I'm assuming that is an Andrews EV 27 cam. I also believe that cam came with a blue instruction sheet. Read it and govern yourself accordingly. Just joking. But, Andrews knows exactly what they're doing. Their instructions are perfect. Read the end play of the cam in the engine and select the proper shim. That's the only way to be accurate with it.

That's a little more technical than I like to show. And, I go by reading the descriptions in the catalogs to see where that cam is going to perform. Then there's preference that comes from experience. Each designer of camshafts uses his own scientific approach.. Then, everything that goes with it. I try to stay away from explaining things beyond my comfort zone.

Hi Mike , I really enjoy watching your videos and have learned quite a bit so I have a question for you. I have a 98 evo and thinking about installing the Andrews 27 cam in it but I was told that I should swap my original cam gear to the new cam so it would match the pinion gear perfectly so in your professional opinion is this nessacary? Thanks!
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
Probably not. If you look in your service manual, you can see how to measure that gear and how the cam gear and the pinion gear are "color coded." However, with todays quality control and measurements, you will rarely have a problem matching gears on an Evo motor. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. I'm saying it doesn't happen very often. Most of them (certainly on Evos), you just install your new cam as per the cam manufacturer's instructions.
