Installing Camper Skylight in 10 steps | Timelapse & Instruction

Installing a camper skylight (rooflight) is necessary for ventilation. This increases living comfort and prevents condensation and therefore also rust. For my girlfriend Bianca installing a camper skylight is her first time. Step by step I explain everything to her and also you.
The skylight we use in this episode is the Dometic micro heki style. This is a small skylight that fits exactly between our frames. You will not get a lot of light through the skylight, but the main reason for us is that we can create an airflow in the camper. Unpleasant odors dissipate quickly and we prevent condensation.

If you are going to buy a skylight, pay attention to whether you buy it "with forced ventilation" or "without forced ventilation".
Without forced ventilation, no ventilation at all with a closed skylight. This way you won't be anoyed by a ventilating noise while driving.
With forced ventilation, with a closed skylight there is still ventilation. Handy if you have a caravan and always want to allow some form of ventilation.

While unpacking the skylight, I found out that you have to order the installation set separately for this type of skylight. Unfortunately, this is not clearly stated when ordering. You must order the installation set based on the thickness of your roof. So I did this right away.
Before you start sawing a hole in the roof of your motorhome, you first carefully mark the dimensions on the inside. Then you can drill holes in the corners. Leave these drilled holes round, as a rounded corner is much less likely to tear than an angular corner. Do you still get it :)
Use a jigsaw for the next step, cut from the outside. Corner to corner until the square falls out. You can then remove the sharp edge with a rasp and sandpaper. After that, it is important that you paint it with metal paint to prevent rust.
If, like us, you have a roof that is not completely flat, then you have to fill it. We did this on the roof with hard plastic and under the roof with wooden slats. Now that the roof is flat, we can place the wooden frame underneath. We glue this on, since we don't want to drill holes into the roof.
Finally, we put rubber butyl sealant around the skylight and place it in the hole. Remember that you leave the opening pointing backwards so that the camper has all benefits from the aerodynamics of the skylight. Also, your skylight will not suddenly fly off if you accidentally leave it open when you are driving.

Haha that must have been some magic trick. Naah you would think that. But Bianca is so worried that I cannot look stressful at all. I always say every material can be fixed. But I wont lie this would have been hard to repair. She did a great job though. I think her second time using a jigsaw.

Wederom een goed uitgelegde video, top. Echter waarom bewerken jullie het frame van het dakluik aan de binnenkant niet met loodmenie of primer? Is daar een speciale reden voor?

Nee geen speciale reden. Het is een goed idee hoor om het hout te behandelen. Als het goed is komt er geen water bij, maar als dat wel gebeurd dan heb jij het behandeld.

Super handig al jullie video'! Ik bekijk ze steeds weer opnieuw voordat ik aan mijn volgende klus aan de bus begin. Momenteel zitten we erg te twijfelen of een dakraam echt nodig is. Of dat een ventilatierooster in de achterdeur volstaat. We hebben momenteel aan de voorzijde (in de schuifdeur en achter de bestuurder al twee ramen gemaakt. Ik hoor graag wat jullie advies zou zijn? En waarom jullie hebben gekozen voor twee dakramen

Ik zou altijd twee (dak) ramen die je tegenoverelkaar kan openzetten plaatsen. De beste manier en ik vertel je ook waarom. Is met een Maxxfan aan de ene kant van je bus en aan de andere kant van je bus een normaal dakraam. In deze video laat ik zien hoe je de maxxfan plaatst. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYOToYZrraadmaM Wat ik daarin niet vertel is dat deze twee dakramen voor luchtcirculatie in je bus zorgen. Luchtcirculatie gaat damp en vocht tegen. En voorkomt dus roest. Daarbij is een goede luchtcirculatie in je camper fijn om in te leven/slapen. Ook zorgt dit ervoor dat na een hele warme dag de koele buitenlucht naar binnen kan en de warme lucht naar buiten gaat. Dus ik zeg zeker doen!

Er zijn profielen leverbaar waarmee de ribbels in het dak (Ducato Jumper) gecompenseerd worden. Beter dan zelf die passtukjes te maken.

Beste Bas en Bianca, Ik ben vooral benieuwd hoe jullie het frame voor het bevestigen van het plafond hebben gemaakt. Vooral tegen de achterdeur vind ik het moeilijk omdat daar geen balk loopt.

Hoi Wim! Alle framedelen voor het plafond zitten tegen de spanten aan. Behalve dus nog de achterste bij de achterdeuren. Die gaan we binnenkort natuurlijk wel plaatsen als het plafond erin gaat. Waarschijnlijk wordt het een aparte video hoe we het plafond plaatsen. 😀

Hoe veel spuiten kit gingen er in totaal in? Heb ik met 1 bus genoeg, of ben ik straks de sjaak halverwege montage?

In principe moet bij een klein dakraam 1 spuit genoeg zijn. Zelf doe ik de buitenrand ook nog met polymeer kit. Maar dat moet je zelf weten.

En sorry voor veel vragen wij hebben ook zon Raam en komen er niet helemaal uit hoe groot heb je precies die houten frame gemaakt voor deze en de maxxfan? En Dan dus de dikte en breedte van de balkjes en waar heb je die plastic plaatjes gehaald om het Dak mee recht te maken( en dikte)

Zet alsjeblieft een veiligheidsbril op als je in plaatstaal zaagt met een decoupeerzaag of - boven het hoofd -boort! Helaas spreek ik uit ervaring, die me in het ziekenhuis deed belanden. Jullie zijn nog zo jong, verpruts je ogen niet.
