You guys are freaking amazing! I’m totally following all of your projects you do around the house. I am now doing a lot of stuff around my home that’s like 70 years old. So I ordered a pallet of the same kind of wood that you did that you jigsaw together.. And I cannot wait to see what it looks like after watching you

@KarenRobinson - Thank you so much! You should do it! The hours were longer then expected because our deck was not an even square so we cut most edges, but the whole center section was a piece of cake! We’ve gotten nothing but compliments after anyone comes and sees the deck. It really spruces up your space so nicely. We would do it again in a heartbeat. Let us know if you decide to put it down and how it goes!

I am jsut about to order for our backyard...I had used this kind before on my 12x 5 patio ( in green) in NYC and absolutely loved it! But now we have a yard and have to cover 700 square feet, oops ;-) Still way less than a contractor job, we'll DIY all in our new home!

It's held up great! We've had literally no issues and we even saved a box of tiles thinking we would need to replace some but we haven't had to do a thing! No mold, no buckling, just perfection! The zero maintenance of it vs wood decking is an absolute dream for us.

$ thanks for the video, I just got my tile samples from Newtechwood and I just have to figure out the color! I have a question, I am doing something similar to what you did, but I am removing sod/grass and adding the pea gravel/leveling sand. Is it noticeable when you go from your concrete to the area that was sand? Is there any dip or change when you walk on it? I am going to try to get it as close in height from the concrete to non-concrete portions, but am curious if there were any issues. I hope this makes sense. Thanks so much!!
@TheStigters
@TheStigters 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely makes sense! We used a 2x4 piece of wood to level the not concrete part with the concrete part. Just make sure to pack it really tight so you have a solid surface to put the deck tiles on ans you’ll be great! We do not notice a change when walking from concrete to non concrete. If you notice any dips you can always pull up that one section and add more leveling sand to it to even it out.

I have a concrete patio that is cracked and weathered. Do you think this decking tile option is a good one to put over the top. I’m guessing it absorbs slight land movements better than concrete slab?
@TheStigters

@AshPlace You can absolutely put it over concrete! As long as the surface beneath the tiles is level and solid the tiles work great.

@TheStigters
@TheStigters 3 жыл бұрын
@DangNguyen - it does not! If you are placing it over concrete or a solid surface you are golden. If you are placing it over paver base just make sure you really pound the base layers down first so you have a solid surface to put the tiles on top of.

@TheStigters
@TheStigters 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely Lilly’s Youth! It has held up Wonderfully! We are in a chicago so the tiles have experience all seasons of sun to lots of rain to 4 ft of snow pilled up on top of it for a couple weeks and they are still in perfect condition. We thought we may have to fill in some more sand after some settling over the winter underneath the parts that weren’t on top of concrete but they held up great so we’re not even going to pull up any tiles! Let us know if you lay them down and how you like them, we’d love to hear!
@LukasLwM
@LukasLwM 4 жыл бұрын
Does it accumulate a lot of dust and 🍂 in the gap? And how do they do over the sand? How many base layers do you have for the dirt area? Assuming you have gravel and sand? I’m thinking deck tiles for 10x12 dirt area for my backyard
@TheStigters
@TheStigters 4 жыл бұрын
There is debris from leaves that can fall in the gaps but can be easily swept or blown out. They've done fine over the sand. We first put down the paver base and then the leveling sand over all dirt areas. There has been some settling (but only underneath where our furniture sits on the tiles) where we will probably add some more sand and re-level eventually, but that's the beauty of these that they come up so easily! Before you lie down the deck tiles just make sure to really pound down the sand and compact it. For numbers of base layers, we would simply advise to follow the instructions printed directly on the bags of sand for # of inches of sand to put down in your space. We went a little light vs the suggestion and that's probably why we have a little settling. Thank you so much for all your questions! Let us know how it goes!

You guys are inspiring! I love the look of your new patio! I would like to do the same underneath my deck, but I have grass there and it's quite an uneven slope area. Do you think I would need to get concrete poored on the patio area first to create a level ground or is would paving sand work too. I'm looking for an affordable option, but costs add up quickly.

No issues and it’s been a year!! We get a lot of debris falling from large trees above our patio so once this summer we did borrow a power washer to wash it down but on a normal basis we just keep a broom out there and sweep the area. A leaf blower also works great if you have the space to keep one around.

Hi, great project. It definitely enhanced the look of your property. I wonder if this can be installed on an existing deck which has gaps between the planks. Would I need a subfloor? I'd like to know. Thanks!
@TheStigters
@TheStigters Жыл бұрын
Great question! You need a sturdy surface so we would think if the gaps are minor it may be ok but if they are significant gaps, you probably want to fill them first to have a level surface so you don’t feel any movement in tiles once you lay them down.
@rachellandry3616
@rachellandry3616 3 жыл бұрын
One more question! Did you have to dig out some of the dirt before adding the paver base and leveling sand? How much space room did you leave? Also- did you use landscaping/weed fabric below the sand?
@TheStigters
@TheStigters 2 жыл бұрын
We moved gardening plots back so we dug dirt out to move it. We made the paver base/leveling sand even with the bricks that were in the middle of our space so we’d have an even ground to lay the tiles on. We did use landscaping fabric where the dirt was

Hey great video! Sorry I think I missed this part- when and where did you use the levelling sand?
@TheStigters
@TheStigters 3 жыл бұрын
No problem. You only need it if you’re putting down tiles on an uneven surface. For example, the entire middle section of our patio was brick so it was super easy to just place the deck tiles right on top. However we wanted our living space to be larger so we also removed gardening plots from both sides of the patio. In those areas we were left with dirt and if you put the deck tiles directly over dirt they will not lay flat and even. This is where you would want to put down 1st layers of paver base, then a layers of leveling sand until your ground felt solid and even before putting down the deck tiles. Make sense? Let us know if you have any other questions and feel free to rewatch the video and follow along while you do your own space!

I love how you actually styled out the pattern to give it a very custom look….now I have a few questions. Do you ever drop anything in those tiny grooves and you cant retrieve it? I live tiny and my patio in about 12 X 12 so it gets lots of use. Also our patio is an upstairs patio with “free” edges. Would you have any idea if this would stay in place?
@TheStigters
@TheStigters 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! They have specific pieces you can buy to finish off the edges to make it look nice so we would assume that means it could be free floating and not move. We drop stuff all the time and you can just grab it out of the gap or even pick up a piece if you really needed to to grab it. Thus far, we haven’t had anything stuck underneath.

This is so helpful as we are trying a similar project this weekend! Have you had issues with the compacted sand getting rained on- either changing the level of the tiles installed there or causing and pooling from not being able to drain properly? Also- how many bags of each kind of sand did you need for your project?
@TheStigters
@TheStigters 3 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome! Good luck, you’ll do great! We have not had any issues and we live in Chicago and had feet of snow melt and huge rainey seasons in the year the deck tiles have been down already. Hmm....it’s been a year since we put this video out so in all honesty we can’t recall how many bags we used but directly on the bag it tells you how many you need to by per feet of space you have!

This vedio is very helpful. I'm planning to lay these titles on my front porch which is made of concrete. My house is a newly built one and the concrete is in great shape. But I think a tile floor would make the porch look and feel good. I'm really worried about the dust and debri that will be collected underneath the tiles as there are lot of gaps between them. Another concern is that the rainwater would also stagnate under the tiles and damage the concrete floor. Do you think it's still a good idea for me to lay these kind of tiles for my porch? BTW, you did a great job and it's a great start for your DIYs
@TheStigters
@TheStigters 3 жыл бұрын
@Hari - thank you so much!! We have noticed that water does not collect under the tiles but just drains out and evaporates. We get a lot of debris on our patio from all the trees overhead so we just sweep the deck and it cleans up nicely. If you have a leaf blower that would work great too! If there is already solid concrete, it will be so easy to put the tiles down since you won’t have to level the floor so we would absolutely suggest putting them down! We get nothing but compliments of the deck and we’re sure you will to! It really ups the beauty of the space! You got this!

That is correct! We decided the cost was not worth it to add. Also all edges of our patio touch a wall vs if it was sitting in the open in a backyard perhaps trimming may be more necessary. Hope that helps!

@TheStigters
@TheStigters 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm.. the problem with putting them over grass as a renter is they would probably kill the grass underneath it so I'm not sure your landlord would be very happy with you. There are also slots in the tiles so grass could grow up between then we would imagine. Perhaps best to check with your landlord before purchasing!

Insightful video... I'm guessing you've had it for like 5 months or so? Are there signs of the tiles fading because of heat or probably some portions cracking up? How about when it rains? Do some portions get mouldy or seem weak?
@TheStigters
@TheStigters 3 жыл бұрын
No signs of weakness still! The tiles all look great and we’ve gotten nothing but compliments on our deck when people have seen it in person. Since there are slats on each piece the water runs right through each piece when it rains so there’s been no problem with standing water. It hasn’t snowed yet so the real test will be how the tiles do over the winter! ❄️ 🥶
