In this video, I install DCC into a split chassis model. These sorts of chassis's have been said to be impossible to install DCC into, but it's not, as I did it, and this is how I did it. I also install tender pick ups, and a homemade DCC Stayalive.
Shopping List:
1x DCC Decoder (with stayalive capability)
Copper Strip
Heat Shrink
Micro 4 pin plug and socket
0.1mm wire
Fine brass wire
1N4007 Diode
1N5352B Zener Diode
100ohm Resistor
100k ohm Resistor
4700uF Capacitor

Easy way i used to do it, strip chassis down, select a part of each chassis side and file a small part down usually on the top, enough to drill and tap a hole, 8 or 10 BA about 3 or 4 mm deep. Screw a brass screw into the hole until it bottoms and is tight in the hole. now cut the head off the screw leaving enough of the brass screw showing to solder a wire onto. You now have a proper electrical connection to each chassis side.

P>S> forgot to add dont forget to keep each motor brush tag away from the chassis sides.

Thanks for an informative and well made video. Not sure if I will ever convert a split chassis loco but the info on making a DIY stay-alive will come in handy.

Nice - I have a pair of GWR 4300's which are in sore need of some type of modification. Having heard the "you can't DCC a split chassis" constant refrain, I was resigning myself to needing Comet Chassis kits for them - still might need to go there, as the wheels and running gear need to be replaced at a minimum.

The comet kits do look good, (albeit pricey with everything else required). I've been tempted for a while but haven't got round to one yet as they do look formidable at the same time!

@@SteamWithaScooby With Comet and my current skill levels, I'd probably be looking at starting with one (or a rake) of their coach kits, and going up from there. So eagerly awaiting the next stage of your build!!

Very informed video. I am confused as to how prescisly how the spring wires onto the brass strips work on the conversion. Any help there plse

I too am confused by this. I am assuming (dangerous word!) that the superglue not only sticks the strip and spring on, but also is the insulator from that side of the chassis? I'm binge watching all your videos. They seem great to me and are very informative.

@@jonathanfrayne9501 the copper clad sleepers are only metalled on one side, the side without glue on, the spring acts as a bridge between the copper and the opposite side of the chassis

@@cakeskin3333 I think I'm getting it. So, the copper clad plus spring are attached to one side but are the connections for the other side of the chassis . . . clever!

I’m a fan of these older models due to their detail plus a jack I’ve discovered in terms of use of highly conductive grease on the axle slots to make them run better and last longer. Interesting video - what decoder did you use?

Ooo that's a good idea, will have to look into that, as I've been fairly hit and miss with grease/lubricant I've used. The chip I used was just a big standard laisdcc 8 pin decoder. They have mixed reviews, but for older model with standard motors (IE not coreless) I've had no issues 👌🏼
