It was nice of you to make a hands on video, it was very clear to follow and I like that you make it very clear from the beginning not to attempt a wireless firmware update. That being said, the DD-WRT forum clearly advises against a 30-30-30 reset for the new generation of routers. The 30-30-30 reset applied to the legacy routers (eg Linksys WRT54G, WRT54GL, etc.). This method can damage the newer routers, including the WRT3200ACM. Also, the current advice is to use the newest beta version, which are more stable than the latest legacy stable versions (v24 sp1). The recommended versions in the router database are OUTDATED and not being kept up to date. They could contain bugs and vulnerability issues corrected in later versions. It would have been also worth advising about the dual boot feature this router has, as knowing in advance can help people preserve the original firmware on one boot partition and do all the dd-wrt installations on the second boot partition. I think your frustration with the DD-WRT routers comes from unrealistic expectations. For example, on WRT3200ACM, disabling the second 5GHz antenna and applying a few simple settings to the remaining 5GHz and 2.4GHz antennas could give you a very satisfying WiFi experience.

If you read through the DD-WRT forums, the 30/30/30 reset is not needed or recommended on the latest generations - 1200/1900/3200 - as it was on all the prior models.

Per dd-wrt forum: never do a 'Hard Reset' aka 30/30/30! it's unnecessary and you can harm your router, the 'Hard reset' applies only to much older routers.

Love those antennas! Looks like Linksys discontinued the product after only making a few of them though. impossible to find in 2020. Also always download the latest version from the /betas folder on the DD-WRT FTP site. As a DD-WRT user for the past 15 years, I can say the router database is well-known for giving super-old versions!

I don't know if it's still gonna be of use, but if you're running stock, use the 'factory' labeled bins. If you have ddwrt already installed and are upgrading to another ddwrt firmware then you use the webflash or sysupgrade ones.

cool video. how do i get VLAN to work? i know the switch config tab is not suitable for the wrt3200acm , i just use port 4 , and then tag vlan2 on that port and I get WAN ip address when using other routers. anyone have an idea which startup command i can use to get WAN working from VLAN port 4?

Daniel, Im reaching out to you because I"m having serious issues with my WRT3200 and i was hoping you could please help me. I followed your setup instructions and added a VPN. However, I keep loosing my wireless signal and when i go into the settings the mix 2.4/5 ghz setting (Wireless Physical Interface ath2 [2.4GHz/5 GHz/802.11ac] setting) is missing. I turn off router and it reappears. I am absolutely baffled. Should I reinstall the firmware, did I set something up wrong, is there a setting that can correct this. Im lost. Any advice would be helpful.

Arnold Stein In my opinion you should return the router. WRT3200 is not yet fully supported by dd-wrt. You could experience several issues like that. Instead go for a WRT1900 or WRT1200 with stable dd-wrt release.

any updates in DD-WRT on the WRT3200ACM any is this just for Wi-Fi performance? I mainly have Wired connections I use NDI with OBS so it takes up a bit of my network while streaming to twitch. I wounder if this would help at all? Last time I use this was on a older Linksys N router i think it was a 1700? But not sure it did help a bit but not to noticeable.

i have a very simple question when using DDWRT on my wrt54g, asus n66u , etc I only use port -1-4 , usng port 1, I click VLAN 2 and tag and I get automatically a WAN ip address from ISP on my router, now with WRT3200ACM DDWRT HOW ON earth do i do that .. all the guides are confusing AF , thanks in advance

There are command line fixes for the Marvell chipset routers (WRT-1900 and 3200) issues with vlans. These issues are from the dual-core CPU and port assignment. Go to DD-WRT forums and search. You will find the solutions. Any attempts otherwise seems to destroy any WAN capabilities. Good luck - I am going down this same path and learning as I go.

Well Daniel I am curious about the modified firmware on this specific router. As far as I know, I haven't seen any option for VoIP in the vanilla firmware?! Does the DD-WRT provide the option to configure IP phones to the router like e.g. a fritzbox does? You may know its quite difficult to find a decent router (like the WRT1900-WRT3200) which is also capable of dealing with phones. Ein kurze Rückmeldung würde mich freuen. Dank dir.

Hello marks4301, to be honest I wouldn't try running something so complex (depending on how big your network is) on one of these routers. It's not what they are meant for. A fritzbox is not only a router, but also your modem to connect to different WANs. This is the difference. There is a ton of features deeply developed on fritzbox to make you have the best phone experience, but it comes to limitations when wanting to use extended services or pro-features of networking. For example I'm running a fritzbox first in line to split phone-data (VOIP functionality) from everything behind that fritzbox. Then i forward everything data-related to a router infrastructure and switching. From there i route data to different accesspoints like WRT1900 or WRT1200 to ensure proper handover between accesspoints. Would recommend doing something like this.

the only comment I have is I have read a couple of articles which suggests that the 30/30/30 procedure is not needed on modern router (or that it is not good for them) but instead pressing the reset button for 20 secs should do the trick

This concerns me as I have got the linksys wrt1900acs v2, was just about to install the firmware from the main dd-wrt website which is from last year. The latest firmware from the download1 is from a couple of weeks ago. I am confused now, which one do i install ? And why are there two different repositories from the same company ??

This router has two partitions for the stock-firmware when it is shipped. Both partitions have the same software on it when shipped. Let's call them partition 1 and partition 2. When you first power on a stock router, then partition 1 is active. Within the seconds 0:00 to 4:24 of my video, we switch from partition 1 to the partition 2 of the filesystem to install dd-wrt instead of stock firmware. Just follow the steps from seconds 0:00 to 4:24 again, to revert to partition 1 which should still be running standard firmware.

Probably is due to the version you are installing being >about 32 meg. I was able to install the last firmware that was about late 2018 which was 34 megs. The most recent firmware was 39 megs. Would not install.

Ich kämpfe gerade jetzt auch damit und komme mit Wlan irgendwie nicht klar :/ Ich hatte vorher Open WRT drauf und da habe ich es sogar mit DFS hingekriegt (ich benutze es wie Router mit meinem eigenem Wireguard dedic server). Könntest du mir vielleicht sagen, wie die drei Wlan eingestellt sind? E ssind ja 2 mit 5 ghz und eine mit 2,4 ... egal wie ich es einstelle- es geht einfach gar nicht :( Entweder verdammt langsam, oder kann ich mir gar nicht anmelden mit Wifi. Mi tOpen wrt habe ich solche Probleme nicht gehabt, aber wurde gezwungen ein wlan von dem deinstalieren. Hier habe ich mich erhoft bei DD-WRT, dass ich vielleicht volles Potenzial nutzen könnte. Tja, jetzt geht mein Wlan gar nicht.

I just got this router a few days ago and I'm not new to ddwrt .However from what I have read there support is very limited and Wi-Fi does not work correctly as the drivers are still being kinked out.Kong has no builds out for it as he does not have this unit yet ...Ill hold off for now..

My understanding is that the webflash file is for folks who already have a previous firmware version of DD-WRT installed. If this is your first time flashing with DD-WRT you will use the other file. There are instructions on that at the DD-WRT site when you first download the firmware for your specific router.

I'm sorry, I'm not using VPN on my devices. Problem with this thing is, that standard firmware is faulty, resulting in loss of speed during transmission and dd-wrt is not yet totally ready for this device. Me personally I returned it and instead bought a WRT AC1200 (amzn.to/2oiCguY). This device is slower because of it's specs but it is very reliable. DD-WRT works like a charm on it. I've also heard, that the WRT1900ACS is working beautiful with DD-WRT as well (amzn.to/2oc0h6j). I think if I'd buy another router I'd go for that WRT1900ACS. Should have the same specs for VPN and other services as WRT3200.

I have a VPN installed on it with DD WRT as firmware and the speed is brutal. I get via Openvpn up to 180 Mbit with a 200 Mbit cable internet. That is fantastic.
