Installing Driver Seat Belt, plus Turn Signal Fix & License Plate Lights on our Skoolie

Mike installs a driver seatbelt, then troubleshoots a busted turn signal switch, and finally installs miniature license plate lights so we'll be legal to drive our Skoolie at night! These are just a few of the multiple tasks we need to complete for the bus to be finished!
Mike's notes: I really wanted to have the rear crossing lights to be used as turn signals and brake lights. Adding these lights to the signalling system created a problem for us. The crossing lights are high current spot lights not just simple signalling bulbs and this ultimately burned out our turn signal switch. Unlike headlights that have a relay to handle the current load, the turn signals are directly switched. The switches we chose to replace the turn signal switch are high current switches so we won't have this problem again.

About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, throughout the Skoolie Build, and to Infinite Adventures Beyond!
Mike & Kerry

The more I see it the more I love that you guys used the original bus door. I really think the use of regular house doors just looks out of place, no matter how nice the build is. The conversion of the original door was a stroke of design genius.

Mike, i was a locksmith for 20+ years covering residential, commercial, and automotive. That turn signal switch will be either GM or Chrysler. You'll have to think old school. When cars and trucks were basic. Find a local junk yard. My guess is GM. It will take some searching but that will be to just find the right style. Search by year, turn signal switch, starting with 1972. You may be able to contact Blue Bird and MAYBE get a part number.

Mike. The top seatbelt mount is supposed to have a crush tube in it so you can tighten down the bolt but the mount can move. As you look back at the video, you will see the belt crinkle up when you fasten it, it needs to be able to move. It will wear prematurely if not. You could use a DPDT switch for your indicators if you get tired of the other 2. :)

You can buy what is called a "signal stat" for your turn signals. Signal stat was designed for older semi trucks and will handle all the lights you want to install.

Changing the big lights out to LED will make a giant difference in your power draw also. You can run many more/larger lights on a single circuit if they are LED.

You should use a locknut on seat belt upper mount. Movement of the seat belt tends to unscrew the bolt with only lock washer.

The shroud around the column splits in half. The switch is plenty heavy duty enough. You simply need a heavy duty flasher. Buy a new switch and flasher. Leave wheel loose till you drive in a straight line and get it on straight. Then put nut back on.

My wife and I just got back from Elkhart, IN where among other RV stuff for the bus we got surplus custom Chevy van seats with integrated seat belts. And swivel bases. I was afraid of trying to do shoulder restraints on the bus as was original for the driver seat. If you want to know who we bought from they had another pair in beige... email me at email on our channel profile. Mine were $250 each. But we picked them up... no freight.

On the upper seat belt bolt, I'd drill out the wood large enough to put a nut and washer between inner and out on the metal column, then you can add another nut plus a nylon lock nut to allow the upper one to "float" on the bolt. Still safe, but will allow you to weatherseal the outer face of the bolt. A lot of people make those tables on the steering wheel for using laptops while stationary.

Mike, I enjoy your postings. I normally do not comment, but I want to bring something to your attention. I worked with heavy truck and bus seat belts in the late 90's. Back then most of the heavy truck and bus seat belts had their retractor mount to the frame of the truck or bus. I noticed that you mounted the retractor to the seat. The reason it was mounted to the frame of the truck or bus was to ensure the belt did not move at an angle from the retractor to the top mounting loop. Please check the instructions that came with your seat belt to make sure it is installed properly. A seat belt not properly installed in a heavy truck or bus can result in the retractor mechanism not working to 100% effectiveness.

I seen the comment about the LED lights, although, in the mean time you could just undo the upper "turn" signals. Then when you get the chance to go to LEDs you could add them back. Just a thought... Also, I would say that you should look for another, longer seatbelt, or move (gosh I hate to say that) the bolt you have to a lower position. As it is, I doubt Kerry could drive the beast if she had to slide the seat forward.

Pilot holes, lubrication and stepbits are your friends. Seat bracket raw metal? Won’t it rust when you get a little moisture in the air? Can you switch out your lights to led? Reducing the power draw through the circuit, preventing overload to the switch?
