I found your channel by accident, and it's awesome! I'm a lady in her mid 60s who knows absolutely nothing about vehicles and their maintenance. I am fortunate to have had the same mechanics for 15+ years whom are very thorough, honest, and patient. Last year I was in a car wreck that totaled my last car - I was T-boned by a guy running a red light. Legally everything went my way as to what happened and was cut & dry with plenty of witnesses, but since then I've wanted a dash cam. Even though I would probably have my mechanic install it, your videos are so clear, to the point, and easy even for me to follow that I now understand much of what were "mysteries" to me before. One tip also about camera location for rain/wet conditions... Would be good if you could run washer fluid on windscreen, then tap the wipers and you're most likely always have that one spot on top/mid where wipers cannot wipe, so if you placed your camera there you might have almost useless camera during the rain... I did that mistake on my last vehicle so I had to relocate the camera, you always learn something new every day.. 👌

If your car has auto wipers, chances are the sensor is integrated into the mount of the rear view mirror. So that area does get swept by the wipers. Don’t hurt to make sure though

How is a dash cam "literally a life saver"?
@JustWasted3HoursHere2 ай бұрын
Excellent video, Chris! I had to find out all these things on my own when I installed my first dashcam. I would add a few additional things: - Take your time. Give yourself an afternoon to install it the right way. First time around might take you between one and two hours, unless you run into a snag. - It's good to look for dashcams that have a capacitor to power it for shutdown rather than a tiny battery for two reasons: First, because capacitors (usually they'll refer to them as "super capacitors") have a much better resistance to heat; and second, because those tiny batteries lose quite a bit of capacity over time and eventually won't have enough power stored to properly save the last file and shut down the system [this is for non-hardwired systems]. You end up with corrupt files that may not be viewable anymore. - If you have a choice between adhering to the window with a mount and VHB (or similar) high strength tape, or a suction cup, always go for the tape. Heat and time will cause those suction cups to come off the window at the worst possible time. VHB tape, on the other hand, can stay on for years and years with no issues *as long as it is applied correctly.* As per the directions, always apply the mount to the window without the camera first and give it at least 12 hours to "cure", for best results. Then mount the camera. Otherwise, it may come off in a few weeks. I've had mine on for a year and a half with no issues. - If you are in an accident, do not tell the other person that you have a dashcam. Let them incriminate themselves when the police get there and then you can show the officer what really happened. - Some dashcams include GPS capability which stores your vehicle's position along with the video data. It can be used to calculate your speed when driving. You have to decide if a GPS module would be helpful or hurtful to you. If you always drive within the speed limit, then you might be okay, but if you go a little over now and then, the GPS data might work against you. Most of the time, unless you own a fleet of vehicles and want to monitor your employees' driving habits, GPS is not needed or even desired. You can usually disable this feature within the menu system of the dashcam, or just disconnect the GPS module (or just get one without GPS). - Get the best quality dashcam you can reasonably afford, especially for night driving. Although lower quality dashcams are still useful,* it's usually better to get the best details you can. - Parking Mode is great, but keep in mind that this means your camera is powered 24/7. Some dashcams do not automatically shut off when the battery voltage drops below a certain amount. It doesn't use much energy, but if you are parked for a long time (weeks) it could be enough of a drain to prevent you from starting the vehicle. Get yourself a voltmeter and measure your 12V battery over the course of several days of parking to see how much of a drain it is with Parking Mode activated. [edit: Many 'hard wire kits' that support parking mode have a low voltage cut-off feature that will shut down the camera if your vehicle's battery voltage drops below a certain amount] - Triple camera dashcams, or ones that include an interior-facing camera, are especially good for Uber and Lyft drivers as they can be used as evidence for badly behaving riders, but for most people they are not necessary and could even be a liability (if, for example, it shows the driver temporarily not paying attention to the road). You'll have to decide if this would be a benefit for you or not. Fleet owners may also want this type of camera so they can monitor the behavior of their drivers to see if they're safe, paying attention, etc. - When installing the rear camera (if equipped), be sure you're mounting it right-side-up before sticking it to the window. Otherwise, your rear footage will be upside down. Sometimes "up" is indicated on the camera, but not always. * [Even a low quality dashcam can be useful because it can show the officer what happened, even if the other person's license plate number is not clearly visible. Unless they ran from the scene, their tag number is not as important as recording the events of the accident.]

@donniev8181Ай бұрын
@PIPBATTLEFORTHEARCTIC the word repent simply means turn or change, God repents more than anyone else in scripture. Eternal salvation is a one-time free GIFT from God to whosoever believes on the Lord Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ paid the price for our salvation in full with His death, burial and resurrection. Gifts are not paid or worked for by those receiving the gift! As soon as someone sincerely calls out to God for salvation thru Jesus Christ, that person is instantly saved, born again into God's eternal family. Our works(turning from sin is work) has absolutely nothing to do with obtaining salvation. Too many people and false religions refuse to acknowledge what the word GIFT means, only when talking about scripture.

You should address a few things: 1. What to do in the case the cig lighter is powered all the time, such as having to unplug it at each stop. I see why you installed them the way you did the truck registered its cig sock as powered full time. 2. With the fuse taps you need to pull the fuse out and see which side is powered. You did mention it in the missing fuse location but if you just plug in the tap and not check the wire to the camera will be unfused. I doubt a lot of DIY people would have picked up on that. 3. There are more cars with bolts, or even one time use clips holding in the A-Pillar. Some Hondas for instance have you strike the a pillar with a hammer to break the clip before removal. 4. A lot of newer cars have lane keep cameras, or something along those lines by the mirror and people need to avoid them when running wiring, for instance if you want the camera on the passenger side and the fuse box is on the drivers side. Subarus even have a warning to not even touch their cover just incase you shift something. Thank you for addressing the over airbag wire tuck, it enrages me seeing it as it can be so dangerous. Id even like to test it or see it tested once with a slow mo cam. Maybe with dash cams being more and more popular one of the youtubers will do it. Other than that nice clean video probably the most thorough one I've seen, I'm not a fan of just tucking wires in like on your truck I would have still removed the A-pillar but thats nit picking.
@antons72023 ай бұрын
I am just wondering when car makers will provide these basic 5 volts in the middle of the windscreen, so that no one needs to risk dragging the wire around to the fuse box. Nowadays, you get USB sockets instead of cigarette lighters, but installing a basic dash cam still turns out to be quite a process instead of just plug and play. Anyway, let us ask ChrisFix to make another video on dash cams installation with the newest and most advanced cars on the market.
@Shiznit3043 ай бұрын
There isn't a senario where the camera would be unfused. It would just go through the bottom fuse if installed backwards. If no bottom fuse is installed, power won't make it to the dashcam if the tap is installed backwards.
@JFlywheelАй бұрын
I have mine wired to a plug that is always on... My fuse box is in the engine compartment. Any suggestions? I didn't really want to drill a hole through the firewall, so for now I just have to remember to unplug it. I'm using a phone charger on this port as well, not the plug that came with the dash camera, so my wireless phone charger stays lit up when plugged in, which helps to remind me to unplug the camera, but it certainly isn't ideal. Loved the video though, I installed mine the exact same way (minus the power goign to a plug that turns off with the engine) and even used similar plastic stick on clip in one problem area.

You know, Chris, I've had two dash cams (front and rear) installed, but I took it to a stereo shop to do it. After watching your video, I have confidence that I could probably do it myself next time. I have a 2016 Nissan Rogue. After watching you tug on the various panels to open them or remove them, I got my fingers under the rear door sill panel on one of the sides of my Rogue, and gave it "a good pull". It worked like a charm. Fascinating. Panel connectors seem much more robust than I remember from the '70s and '80s, where many of them would break if you gave them "a good pull". Of course, that was after you removed any screws holding them. I really like these new panel connectors. Heh. "All these plastic pieces just snap in. So just give them a good hit". You know, I'll bet that some of the assembly folks in the factories REALLy enjoy their jobs. That's a job for me. 😃

This is an excellent video. You even overviewed the fuse direction which is critical. If you place the jumper in backwards your fuse will not operate correctly and could cause a fire. Very Important! There is one more extremely important point to add, when installing a dash cam on a car that has an active warranty by yourself and connect it to the fusebox. YOU WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY!!! You need to have your car dealership install it for you! However you can still install your dash cam and plug in into the lighter and run the wires outside.
@chrisfixАй бұрын
Thanks a lot! I'm not sure how this would void a warranty though (If you did something completely wrong and it caused some crazy electrical damage sure, but the chances are really low if you know what you're doing)

The one big takeaway from this video (for me) was that this takes a lot more skill to do properly than I had imagined, and it’s actually possible to do it very wrong (thinking of the airbags). I’m so impressed with the detail you put into your videos and this is no exception. There are so many great reviews on dash cameras but none of them really address what it takes to properly hard-wire a system into a vehicle. Thank you for doing this Chris. I wish you were available for hire! Hope things are continuing to go better for you in life. You seem like a great dude.

Amazing video! I just recently started to be more caring towards my car. Before, I treated that thing like crap and it was showing pretty bad. Seats were dirty, years worth of rocks, sand, and dirt were piled on the floor, dust all over the dash, residue in the cupholders, trash was everywhere in there, the trunk was full of random and useless junk, and my airbag light was on for 3 years straight. It's not a new or impressive car by any means, just a generic 2012 VW Jetta SE with just over 170k miles on it. I always mentioned to people how I wanted to get a new car since mine was a piece of junk, but I came to realize that it really wasn't a piece of junk, I just treated it like it was. Besides, with the car-market nowadays, I figured I might as well maintain that car for as long as I can and drive it into the ground, lmao I spent about 4 hours deep-cleaning the interior of the car to make it look good, and then hand washed my car after that. Haven't seen the car be that clean since I bought it! Cleaned out my trunk too, and found a shaker bottle with brown liquid inside of it. I don't know what it was that was in there, where it came from, or whose it was, but it stank like shit (looked like it too) and has been fermenting in heat and cold for God knows how long. That was really a wake-up call for me too. Then I figured I should at least get the airbag light diagnosed. I took it to a VW dealership and they scanned it for free, and addressed and fixed another recall that was active on my car. They said the Seat Occupied Recognition control module was faulty, thus causing all airbags in the car to be deactivated and told me that they could get it fixed for me for $900. I said I'd decide later, and took the car home and did research on how to fix the issue myself. Bought an OBDeleven scanner and went to a scrapyard and ripped the module out of a 2012 Passat. Installed that in my car, used the scanner to reprogram the new module to work for my car, and no more light! Fixed my issue for less than $100 instead of giving the dealership almost 10x that amount. I felt very satisfied fixing that issue myself and saving that much money, and realized that I also had fun doing all that research and fixes. So from here-on-out, I think I'll try to do some fixes for my car myself if I think I can handle it! After getting that fix done, I figured that I should also invest in a dashcam. Given my airbags work again, as well as the fact that I'm paying full coverage for my car, and I've already encountered two hit-and-runs on my vehicle since I've had it, and the only reason I have my current car is because my last car was totaled while it was parked in the street. So having a dashcam would be a great investment in my opinion, also considering the fact that I plan to keep the car until it gets totaled or it blows up on me. Stumbled across this video and this has really eased my mind on DIY car projects and dashcam installations, and I plan to invest in a dashcam system next paycheck! Thank you so much for this video! Huge help!

If anyone is on the “fence” about getting a dash cam my tip is definitely get one! I live in Florida with a lot of a**hole drivers who seem to be deliberately trying to get into a collision with me. Some of the sh*t that my dash cam has recorded is unbelievable. One thing is if you have a dash cam and you get into a collision that’s your fault the info on that camera might be used against you. So make sure you’re a good driver!😂😊
