I too had similar results as you which I was not happy about. After further investigation, I found that when I put my fingers into each bearing and turned them individually, they felt ‘notchy’ and not smooth as I expected them to be. I contacted Hambini and it was agreed that I probably damaged the bearing races during installation - to be fair, because of my particular frame, installing the bearing/BB shell was a very tight fit and I understood how this would happen. I purchased and fitted new bearings (Hambini was happy to provide them for free but I paid for them as I knew that this in part my error) and the problem was 100% rectified and the cranks spin test was transformed i.e. they spun with very little resistance and significantly better than my standard Shimano BB. Now 3000km later they still spin buttery smooth and with little resistance. Some of the comments below are so far off the mark. When installed correctly, they WILL/SHOULD spin freely and meet with your expectations.

I have installed 2 Hambini BB86 racing on a Hongfu FM169 disc and R7. The bearings will run better after you have put some miles on them. It is due to the grease in the bearings that need to wear in. If you do a spin test after 1000km it will be better.
@lobuxracer4 жыл бұрын
Not the grease at all especially on a spin test. The bearing could be completely dry and perform well with a zero load test like this. The real issue is the plastic seals haven't yet worn at all and are initially quite stiff from the manufacturer. If you want spin test performance on install, you need metal shielded bearings which have zero contact with the inner race. They're also not a great idea for bearings used in wet environments if you want a reasonable service life. Hambini goes into the seal issues in detail in his bearing video, but any of us who've been playing with this stuff for years across multiple platforms (roller skates, bicycles, motorcycles, cars, aircraft, etc.) understand the complex trade offs the engineers make when deciding which bearing configuration is best for a given application which inevitably includes the customer's budget. And yes, my Cervelo S5 has a Hambini BB with genuine NTN bearings and the lowest friction seals available short of no seals at all.

If you bought that bb you've probably watched a video or two of his which means you know you can't just press one of these in and expect it to work without checking at least the size of the hole on both sides. If the frame is undersized or you left that adhesive in there that you mentioned after knocking out your old bearings that will excessively compress the bearings, it won't spin properly, and you'll get premature wear.
@anthonyosborne11274 жыл бұрын
What might have been a good idea in retrospect was to put the crank into the bb to test the spin príor to putting the bb into the frame.
@lobuxracer4 жыл бұрын
If you really want to know what the issue with the spin test is, pull the bearings out, remove the seals from both sides, install the bearings and test. If you STILL have significant drag, the hole in the frame is clearly so bad it is distorting the bearing outer race AND the Hambini shell. That's pretty unlikely if the shell presses in smoothly, but not entirely impossible. Watch Hambini's video on bearings (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWjMi4mciKmVn6M from 9:00 to end) and you'll quickly understand why the spin test is crap for any sealed bearing, especially when brand new. The seals aren't worn yet. The fit on your shell to frame sounds just like the fit in my Cervelo S5 which I am confident is not a knock off, but without question isn't the way it should be from the factory, and this is a "Limited Edition" Tour de France commemorative frame. You'd think they'd put a little extra effort into it. Not at all. Still with Hambini's BB, I have zero issues running whatever crank I like now without any BB noises. Well worth it to me.
@Technotranceism Жыл бұрын
With the BB out, I would've checked the frame tube for trueness. If there's any chance of mil spec out of wonk, it's going to cause compression issues with the BB alignment and bearings free spin. Granted, fresh bearings need some breaking in as well, but before installing, best to check tube sizing and trueness first.

Brave Man to do a press fit install!! I've just finished sorting mine on a Trek Stache with a BB92 GXP. First bought a Shimano BB92 with 22mm adapter sleeve but nope. The tolerances are different for Shimano! The Sram drive side axle was wider than the "24mm" bearing! Bought a Sram BB86 GXP after reading they were one and the same as BB92, well nope. The Sram BB86 is for road bikes, installs the other way round, only just closes at 92mm and has a flatter non drive side gasket which is face specific (as I found out to my cost after full assembly). Finally got it sorted and the bastard is now as smooth as silk, well.... nearly!

Try taking the bearings out of the shell and see how they move (feel) compared to being in the shell (when installed in the frame). I've had issues with additional compression of the bearings because the carbon shell was too tight and was compressing the Hambini BB too much, which in turn was adding additional loading on the bearings.

Pik Ho yeah the non-racing one comes with contact seals, same as Shimano. All the spinny bottom brackets you see, including Hambini’s, are contactless sealed. Which means they are significantly more vulnerable to contamination. Generally speaking, you’ll probably need 1000-2000 miles on these bearings to truly break in the seal to the point where they’re just barely touching and even then it’ll still be slower than a (new) contactless. But if you’re riding in the wet or dirt, these bearings will last much, much longer and will save you watts that way :)

Delamintation is due to too much heat, melting the resin that bonds carbon fiber together. Hammering will simply crack carbon fiber because carbon fiber is very hard and is brittle because it's hard. Nothing to do with Delamintation
@Omar-kw5ui4 жыл бұрын
@@Rexuar No. Delamination is simply when the layers in a composite separate because the tensile strength of the resin is overcome. For-example, if a force is applied perpendicular to the alignment of fibres. Fibre composites are only strong along the direction of the fibres, such as in tension. They are however weak across the layers because the resin's tensile strength determines how strong the material is in that direction. A force applied across the layers (like a blunt force from a hammer, or even a toolset falling from a mechanic's belt on an aircraft wing) causes Delamination. Delamination can be followed by fiber fractures, but, that's not necessary. Delamination is not obvious to the naked eye, fibre fracture is. Did you see any fractures on the bike? no. P.s. Hey Andrew, back with some more questions: This will be my first real custom bike, so I am not sure if the bottom bracket is included in the frame/ in a complete groupset (for example shimano 105) or if I need to buy it separatly. I´ve also noticed that you dont use the 28mm gravel tres from lightcarbon, but deeper ones. I´ve asked lightcarbon about wheel options, but they told me that the wheels is specificly for their gravel bikes, even though I would love deeper rims.
@WeRideSouth4 жыл бұрын
I did not receive a BB with my frame. Sometimes if you purchase a complete groupset new it will come with a BB, but the seller usually indicates that. As far as wheels go, LC does make a "gravel specific" wheel, but looking at the wheel specs, they just look like XC mountain bike rims. The only real difference is the bead lock system. I opted for the LC Asymmetric disc rims on DT350 hubs and Sapim CX rays. ASD38C-DISC in the front and ASD44C-DISC in the rear. If you compare my rims to the GCX28 (LC's "gravel specific") rims they are within 1mm of each other in regards to inner width, lip width and max rim width. I chose to go with the ASD's because they are closer to Enve's AR 3.4 spec. I guess what I'm trying to say is, get what you want there is no such thing as a "gravel specific" it's all marketing. P.s. Colin Strickland won Dirty Kanza on a set of ENVE SES 3.4 AR.

OK.. IF the frame alignment of bb openings are not align, it would not spin as much no matter what you do. Hambini obviously used or made the most aligned bb on a frame he can find to showcase and market his products. That's not to say his 1 piece bb shell design is not good, its great. The spin you showed on your vid is already great. Changing to low friction bearings without shields is very insignificant in terms of reducing friction vs. Bearing longevity. Think of a bearing with gunk in it... There goes your watts. If you just want the satisfaction of the freespin like in one of the videos, there is a very simple way to think about this. If you do 300 watts on a bike and you gained 2 watts from little to no resistance on bearings, you now are pushing 302 watts. It's less than significant dude. It is difficult to even maintain a steady power number on a power meter.

It is so difficult these days finding something that is made outside China by some passionate people who want to make something amazing!

@@rossmoore-far2155 I react by riding my bike and enjoying the performance gains obviously! Initially I set out to make an install video. I didn't give my opinion on it because I haven't ridden it. All I could compare at this point was what Hambini shows on his installs vs my install on my frame.
