I've just seen a guy testing K&N filter and it performed very badly in filtering small and large particulates. It gives nice airflow and good performance but is not suggested from whom wants their engine last for long. It's mostly for racing, I wouldn't recommend it

I used a K&N air filter on my Honda Element, I would NEVER use one again. The oil on the filter can get on the sensors and damage the sensors, but also the filter lets in more air, but if you examine it, its more porous, meaning it also lets in more dirt into the engine, and is bad for the long term life of the engine. The 1,000,000 mile warranty gives you a false sense of "quality" as thats only for the air filter cotton, but doesn't do much when it lets in more dirt into the engine of your car itself. Just my 2 cents on K&N, I went back to paper after 80,000 miles of using a K&N.

The oil film is only a problem when you clean and improperly re-oil the filter. Folks generally will apply TOO MUCH oil into the fiber thinking "more is better" as, "this will catch more dirt particles". Well, wrong. And that's where 99.9% of the problem comes up with - user error. Do not apply too much oil ! Use very little and only apply it to the unclean air side.

Are you sure you aren't blaming user error? 1) Did you accidentally oil the wrong side of the filter? 2) Did you massively over-oil the filter? K&N filters have pros and cons. They don't really improve horsepower much, but they do filter just as well (they are more porous because they are oiled, that's completely normal). The disadvantage is that they are more expensive and they have less dirt capacity. The advantage is that they can last the life of the vehicle with almost no degradation in performance if properly maintained. I've never gotten oil on my MAF sensor from overoiling.
