2015 video, and still a lifesaver. I accidentally deleted the volume of my Mac's HD, and nothing to mount until I saw this video using the Disk Utility from Internet Recovery. Even the USB Mac OS X installer's Disk Utility didn't worked at all, only the Internet Recovery brings back the main drive back to life. After that, I reinstalled a fresh copy of Mac OS X from USB Drive. I can kiss you for this.

You are my KING! I replaced the hard drive on a new Mac mini and literally after doing all those steps, booted it up and saw a flashing folder icon with a question mark on it and wanted to cry. Everyone was saying to just simply “plug in your old drive” and copy it over. Like wtf. It’s 9pm during quarantine, and I have NOTHING to connect a Hard drive to this Mac through USB. I know you made this vid back in the OSX Lion days, and now it is the Covid 19 days,. Much has changed. OSX Big Sur is lurking around the bend. I am a cheapskate and still use Mac Yosemite. I never needed to change until now. I had to do a disk repair and reinstall and came to the exact problem you were showing us how to fix. I wasn't sure how to erase and reformat the drive. Maybe you should implement at least WPA2-AES password protection. You seem to be running an open unsecured wireless network, putting you in jeopardy when someone with a laptop rocks up to your property and starts torrent sessions like KaZaA ( or related ) on your home network. Once he's done, he slips away unseen before the FBI, CIA and Homeland Security knock on your porch door for questioning.

Hi Chris, The only thing I can see on my Disk Utility screen is "disk0" and beneath it, the hard drive logo with the words "Mac OSX Base System". The text windows are greyed out and don't allow me to do anything further. My USB hard drive was only 10GB. Is this why I can't proceed further. The message I get is, "This disk doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme..." If I get a large USB hard drive will this work for me? My entire contents other than the Mac OSX Base System was taken down by a virus on my machine. Could not believe it.

Dyren rivera guys the way i fixed it was by getting a flash drive and installing the os x i wanted, then plugging that into the problem mac and installing it that way. worked like a charm ☺️

@Rap Metropolis you need to have a second mac for this. look up a tutorial on how to download an os x onto a flash drive (which you would do on your second mac) then you open your problem mac up, boot it into recovery mode as it shows in this tutorial, insert the flash drive, and install it that way:)

I’m trying this on my mid-2012 pro with upgraded SSD. There was an outage and the computer died in the middle of an update. Had to wipe the hard drive and start over. As much as that sucks, now I follow every step in your video, it downloads the fresh macOS but when it goes to reboot to main screen I get a flashing file with a question Mark symbol. What am I doing wrong? I feel like I’m missing a step.
