🔵 Installing Mated Queens, Making Splits and Rookie Mistakes

This past week, I had several mated Queens that had been banked, that is they were removed from their hive, put into Queen cages with attendants and "stored" until I could make some splits to install them from. During this process, I discovered I had forgotten about a NUC that had been set up back in April. Upon inspection, I discovered I had also made some mistakes that I would have found if I had not forgotten about this NUC.
I misspoke in the ending clip. There was one capped Queen cell I removed along with the two uncapped cells.

Your the first person I have seen with rubber gloves besides me. Wax and propolis is a mess! I’m starting my 3rd year and researching queens for spring.

Yeah, cleaning propolis off my hands after going thru 15-20 colonies can be a challenge. Disposable nitrile gloves work great for this. I have a couple videos on raising Queens. We raise quite a few each year and our honey production colonies all get a young Queen each fall. Thanks for watching.

It happens to the best of us. It's been a stressful time with all of the garbage going on, that makes it really easy to forget things. That was definitely perfect timing, they were packed! 😀 Last year I used my BY bees hives for brood, but I have to stick with the cordovan Italians if I want to raise queens. They didn't cross well with my local genetics, that was my hot hive. I just have one of those queens left.

When you relocate a hive do you obscure the entrance to make the bees do an orientation flight? This would help to prevent them from returning to their old location.

Yes, that along with the new surroundings they learn real fast. House bees that have never flown will orient to this location with no problem. You might have some drift at first and can exchange box locations to help this.

Your not alone when you don’t get back to your hives in a while , I lost an entire hive, the bees obsconded on me, ants got into the hive then the wax moth finished off the hive , my bad so yeah make notes and check at least weekly .

What is the characteristics criteria that you use for choosing genetics that you want to graft from?

Gentle bees that are calm on the comb. Queens that ignore the fact a frame is out of the hive as she goes about her business. Queen's genetics that show good hygienic traits. Good brood pattern. House bees that properly move nectar up and away from the brood chamber instead of plugging it. Foragers that fly in cool spring and fall weather. Over wintering clusters that are conservative on their food stores. As I go thru the Apiary, there are always a couple Queens and colonies that stand out. I also keep a few Queens just for their brood frames as I mention in the video.

Screens either up or down but not against the wax.
