I would have gone for vertical cladding, but I get that everyone has their preference... there's also a couple of places that your sheeting runs short at window & corners where you then need to add a small piece to complete the face... not advantages, I would recommend next time take your drawings to the sheeting supplier and they can work out max lengths which you need to make the facade seemless... non the less bud, I fills my heart with joy to see people like yourself taking on tasks like these, and making it work... well done, love it and keep on sharing!!!👌👌👌

Great video. Love how you reference the angle grinder "history". You use one long enough, and you get a story to tell. Mine is when a disc split while chopping a wheel hub bearing racer and cutting a slot in my ear. lol

My story is of getting my working under a vehicle and getting my thumb jammed between the guard and wheel. Luckily it was a hard disk rather than a cutoff wheel, so the damage was wide but shallow, just a 1/4" wide slot through my thumbnail from front to back.

Love the horizontal! Nice intro to steel panel install. Got two words for you PLASMA CUTTER. I had an angle grinder break mid cut. The broken blade sliced my wrist open, several slashing cuts. Stitches on the weekend! Welders gloves and googles, or shield every time!

Thanks! we like the horizontal look as well, it makes it look a little more custom. And I've never actually used a plasma cutter even though Iv'e done a fair amount of metal work. Angle grinders deffinately not the safest thing, and I've had a fair number of blades brake on me, none of them as bad as what you got. However I did cut my leg open with an angel grinder when it kicked back on me (this was in high school). Welders gloves is a great idea, and I have like 3 pairs of them!

@@PootsPastures plug in shears, they remove a thin sliver. You can get them battery powered as well. I hope to build a long bungalow all steel, with a Chinese greenhouse hanging off the sunny side.You guys will never be homeless!

Poots - Per Robert. No joke. I also had serious accident while cutting with a grinder: Making cuts on installed siding. Blade must have hit a nail or something and wham! Whatever I hit, jerked the tool so hard it loosen my grip, and in a second the tool ran up the surface and flipped over onto my hand. Adrenaline kicked in enough to tourniquet and drive to hospital. I was lucky that a great surgeon was on call and managed to save my hand. Anyway - food for thought guys.

I did give thought to that but the main thing was that we liked the looks of the black roof. The lows during the summer are in the 40's and our highs are usually in the 80's so I'm not worried about it heating the house up that much. We have AC (which most places out here don't have) so we can turn that on if need be. Hope that helps answer your question.

We had such an internal struggle on how to do it. I really like it vertical but I was worried with such a small house it would make it look to skinny and tall. I did also want to do horizontal on the bottom and then vertical on the 2nd story part but chelsea convinced me to just make it horizontal everywhere. Who knows though maybe I'll make some sort of an accent on the front of the house!

Curious why you installed your zip panels vertically vs horizontally. Usually you get a lot more strength running the panel lengthwise perpendicular to the wall studs.

I would put putty tape on the vertical over lap so water has no chance of ever going under the two panels that meet. Screws can back out in time from heat and cold. Never go with as few screws as possible for looks. Always go with more screws to avoid high winds never having a chance to blow off your roof or siding. Quality over looks. Metal is screwed down, dont get into the idea of few is better, because your asking for trouble.

the screw spacing we used is what the manufacturer's instructions specify, you are welcome to add all the screws to your siding.

What made you want to run the screws through the taped joints in your sheathing?

The screws aren't exclusively on the taped joints. I wanted the screws to fall on a stud (for a structural aspect and to help avoid pipes and wires in the wall). I also wanted the screws to be spaced every 4 feet. So when we started from the end the screws mainly fell on the joint. There are deffinately areas where they don't fall on the joint it just kind of depends on how we put the sheathing up, and which side we started putting the siding up. It shouldn't compromise the water proofing especially with the air gap behind the panels. Hopfully that helps answer your question.

Any way of mitigating the fastener gasket’s deterioration? Imo the elements will absolutely destroy those gaskets before either the metal or the fasteners themselves, and it presents tons of problems down the road. The rubber ones are the worst. Last 5 years tops

The gasket at some point will need to be replaced, however you're looking at full warranties of around 30 years, so about the same time you would be replacing any type of roof. You can have fasteners that are not exposed (hidden fasteners) which would not have the same type of gasket, or be exposed to the elements if that is a large concern of yours.

What do you have up there before the corrugated siding? And is that metal framing?

Wood framing, we used zip system as our sheathing and water proofing, and I used foam sill seal to make an air gap between the sheathing and siding.

We ordered it through home depot. The company is called "metal sales" most lumber yards will have a company they use for metal roofing and siding and most companies have similar styles and colors. How that helps!

What kind of overlap on the sheets? No sealant in those overlap joints?

No sealant in the joints on the wall they are over lapped and shingled for rain to run off as well as wind. For the roof we ran sealant down the joints but for the wall I don't think it's necessary. It will never have standing water on it, and it has an airgap behind the metal so if water does make it past the siding it will dry out. Oh and we overlapped horizontal at least 6" and verticals one ridge per the instructions. Hope that answered your question.

Every house around us is built in a very rustic style and I am not a big fan of that when it is our full time residence, so I thought the siding and color would set it apart a little and make it a little more modern.

absolutely!!! about 100mm / 4x inches, run a thick bead before placing the next sheet or panel... alternatively you can opt for a neoprene strip, but that's just wasting bucks...

The metal sheets are custom ordered with the style, color, and length you want, and you can get them from pretty much any lumber yard. I thin all the siding cost around 4k total. Also they make trim pieces for the corners. If you watch the video where we finish the exterior of the house we show that trim being installed

Thank you, in the process of doing research and this was the only video I have come across where I see the actual install on ZIP... My question is doesn't the screw through the siding into the zip defeat the zip or is the tape your screwing into enough to seal it back up?

So short answer is no, the coating on the zip is made to "seal" around fasteners and act as a gasket of sorts. So the screw through the siding into the zip does not matter that much (according to zip). I'm sure you would not get the same level of sealing out of Tyvek though. And I can tell you that installing the zip is way easier than installing the sheathing and then a moisture barrier. Hope that helps!

The ends overlap each other, there no specified amount that they are supposed to overlap when on a wall, but we are overlapping them about 6".

How do you prevent rust on the edges you cut?

My thinking would be to paint the edge with touch up paint, but I've never seen anyone actually take the time to do that. All of our cut edges are either protected by an overlapping panel or by trim so they shouldn't be subjected to the elements directly. But like I said I've never seen or read anything where someone said they took the time to address it.

Thanks! So we knew we wanted to go with metal siding so I'm not sure about costs compared to alternatives like hardy board, etc. But it did play a roll in what type of metal we got. They had some really cool hidden fastener sidings, but those were pretty expensive, so we went with the exposed fastener. And from what I remember is the cost per foot was the same between this and the normal corrugated type metal. But we spent around 4k for all of it. Hope that helps!

No Underlayment behind metal siding?

The green coating on the sheathing is a moisture barrier. It's a liquid applied coating, and once the seems get tapped it gets an air and water barrier. We also used the foam sill seal to create a small 1/8" gap behind the siding. This allows any moisture or water that may get behind the metal to dry, so water doesn't get trapped. Hope that answers your question.

We are most likely going to back fill up to about 2 or 3 inches of the top then we're u using excess rock from the property around the house. If I were to do it again I would make the outside sheathing of the wall flush with the outside of the ICF's and then run the siding all the way down.
