As a 10 year machinist let me give you two tips that will save you from having a tap go in cock eyed and possibly breaking. Get a T handle tap wrench and apply load evenly with both hands. Also for hand tapping for in one or two turn then back out a quarter turn. This will cause the chips to break and ease the progress forward. For stainless steel I recommend going less than .5mm or .010" larger on your recommended drill size this will make tapping far easier

I just bought a 2015 mt09 (Orange tank) and love it minus the suspension. It is the worst on any bike I have had over the years. Even my 04 xt660x was better. Anyway the previous owner failed to mention the thread for one paddock bobbin is gone. Filled in with metal putty. Now I need to get that repaired. I can tap a new thread but this looked like the bobbin was snapped out of the swing arm. Need to figure out how to fill the hole. PS. Don't cut holes for the controls. Cut the plastic stubs of so you can move the controls. Use electrical tape on the bar then mount controls on tape to stop them spinning.

Did you find a good way to measure where to drill the new wholes in the protaper bar?

My MT and yours are surprisingly similar, same Andreani Misano forks, same Öhlins shock (stx46?), same full Akrapovic, same colour, same windshield...when you showed it for the first time I actually checked if mine was still in my garage :P Jokes apart, purple doesn't get me either, I'm planning to paint it with the new mt09 SP graphics (black-blue-silver)

Should of used a Starter tapered tap. You used an Bottoming tap. Magnetic V block would be better to hold round bar stock in a vice. And a Tapping handle would help instead of a spanner

I ran ProTapers on both my old MTs. Only real issue is that it isn’t comfortable. It just sat too low. For stunting it was fine. But for commuting it was too low and uncomfortable.

I know from watching your more current vids, you do not have this bike any longer. With that said, although I run Protapers on my dirtbike, I thought about them for my FZ09 (2017), but I did not want to use them because of the bright white and yellow logo, specifically the yellow. My 2017 has black forks, so I am doing my best to keep my bike almost all back and white.

That's what I thought, too. Temp mount the bars to cut ends and drill. Cover bike with towels to protect from shavings. Also, pipe cutter instead of saw for more precise cuts.

Hi Chaos mate I bought a GEN1 MT-09 with aftermarket handlebars fitted very poorly…. They didn’t drill the holes needed to lock the controls in place so everything is misaligned and loose….. I saw you take measurement from your standard bars… can you tell me the distance and placement Of the 3 holes I need to drill mate ?
@narrator-timothymckean4 жыл бұрын
I did the same upgrade on my Honda NC. The drilling was awful, and found i didn't end up with enough space for all the switch gear, and never got the bar ends to work. Ended up switching it all back after about 6 months. What a waste.

I guess if you know you have to cut it, and drill it..i would stick into the vise grip the side i have to work on as much as i can, the less length you live out the less effort it will require you to work on, for the drill i usually live a small cup of oil out for me to dip it from time to time, small detail that help you on the overall process but nonetheless thank you for the video..never done this mod and didn’t know the process behind it..
