Best not to engage with a *know it all* Thx for the video! When I watch videos like yours I gain knowledge from watching others work. yeah your way probably has some flaws but who's doesn't! We all learn from each others mistakes as well. I for one appreciate you posting!

Your right. They were in the wrong box at Lowe’s. Didn’t realize til I had them glued and had to go back and cut them out. Thankfully they held for a few days.

I’m reading manufacturers specs on pentair supermax products tonight as customer service manager for a pool company to be better informed. You sir, should do that. Just learned about the rule: STRAIGHT PIPE 5X the length of pipe diameter from pump. You’ll probably find in your pump manual when you read it that a street elbow or any elbow for that matter should NOT come straight from out of pump.

As I’ve told the other idiots that have said this same thing. Try watching my video instead of making comments off of the thumbnail. I FULLY EXPLAIN EVERYTHING YOU JUST SAID IN THE VIDEO! I’m also a Manager for the largest Pool Company in the US. and install pool equipment all week long and know the manual for every type of pump. The purpose of having the straight price of pipe before the pump is to ensure there is no cavitation happening which could damage your pool pump by by introducing air into the pump well and causing the pump to overheat. Again if you watched my video you would see that using the street elbow creates a smooth flow of water with 0% cavitation, but keep reading your manuals while I’m actually out in the field doing the work!

Also why are you using sweeps?
@chrisbuildsitall
@chrisbuildsitall Жыл бұрын
Just to reduce the amount of head I’m losing, it doesn’t help much, each hard 90* loses about 5’ of head and a sweep 90 is about 4’ of head.

And that arch you made to the inlet is alot of up climb for water flow. No need to go that high get a different trait bud

Again - don’t comment if you don’t know anything. That’s called a Hartford loop. Most pool builders use them when doing installs. That’s absolutely nothing to an almost 3 hp pump.

You made the most common mistake: Pump manufacturer’s installation spec sheet calls for a STRAIGHT section of pump inlet pipe with a MINIMUM length of 5 times the pipe diameter. You have a bend too close to the inlet. This causes turbulence and cavitation. Even if no bubbles in your strainer basket there will be excess strain on the pump motor which shortens its lifespan. I’ve seen some professionals make this mistake but hoping nobody copies this installation. If I was the foreman I’d have you cut it out and ROTATE THE PUMP 90 degrees with a nice long straight inlet pipe and simply eliminate that angled fitting right before the inlet. Rookie mistake
@chrisbuildsitall
@chrisbuildsitall Жыл бұрын
And if you watched the video I said exactly that. That’s why I put in the 90* sweep going into the pump going into the pump to reduce turbulence. 90% of pumps installed don’t have the recommended length of pipe leading to the pump.
@danaparish1644
@danaparish1644 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisbuildsitall That “sweep” elbow does not reduce turbulence-it CREATES it. Since you’re using 2” pipe, you need 10” of straight pipe before the suction side of your pump (like Andrew Leavitt said). Also, there’s no filter manufacturer that recommends using a “street” elbow into their filters. Also, you don’t need a back flow preventer from the pump to the filter (definitely between the salt generator to the heater). Your salt cell should also be at the “low point” in the plumbing especially if using a variable speed pump. Just FYI, the reason you paint PVC is to prevent it from deterioration from UV (sunlight).

@@chrisbuildsitall Utter nonsense to claim that “90% of pumps are installed at wrong orientation” as justification to plumb yours incorrectly as well. Even if that were true it would make more sense to show everybody how to do it the right way. Deleting the unnecessary 90 degree elbow is an easy fix that will extend the service life of your pump motor.

When there is no room there is no room. My pool is 20 years old same as my pump. It's still running that long time with few problems in-between. However, I have decided to finally swap the old guy out for a VS Pentair. I have a pool suction line and a spa suction line (2ft apart) coming up from the ground about 2 ft high where both of them hit a 90-degree elbow to horizontally connect to each other. They meet in the middle at a 3-way diverter valve that shoots into the pump. The distance between the pump and that diverter valve is maybe 3 inches. I could have moved around my 3 pumps, spa heater, and filter (replumbing the entire above ground system) just to add a few more inches between my pump and diverter valve but I didn't. I didn't because if it has worked fine for this long why change it now? I am not recommending attaching your pump directly to the elbow (which in this video he did not) but leaving just a few inches is fine as well.

Well this was quite painful to watch. So many mistakes. As others have noted, the worst being the lack of a straight suction run into the pump. The pump could easily have been moved 6" to the right. I am sure you tried your best for an amateur and your channel is titled DIY so fair enough but then you comment that you work for the largest pool company in the US. Wow! But you don't even know why PVC pipe is painted etc. Respectfully suggest renaming this video "How not to..."

OMG why is there a check valve between the pump and the filter????
@chrisbuildsitall
@chrisbuildsitall Жыл бұрын
If I move the pump 6” to the right it would be hitting the filter inlet, so not an option. . Obviously you’ve never actually been out in the field and seen any “professionals” install pumps as 75% of them don’t have a 10” straight piece of pipe leading into the pump. My install is works perfectly with absolutely no issues. As for the check valve, that’s where the “professional” pool installer placed it, I just put it back where it was. Now that I’m more educated on the subject I know it doesn’t go there and that my setup doesn’t need one, but it’s there and gonna stay. I would love to hear what the benefit of painting the PVC pipes are for a setup that’s inside an enclosure, my equipment has been inside an enclosure since the day it was built and I don’t understand what benefit there is for painting the pipe black when it never sees sunlight?

@@chrisbuildsitall Don't be so defensive. You might learn something. You could have rotated your filter 45 degrees and there would have been a heap of extra clearance but even the clearance that is already there at the end (28:35) of the video would have been well worth utilising. OK your 5 months experience of no faults (yet) trumps the manufacturers instructions and 22 years' experience. You win. Nice change of position on the pipe painting too. Absolutely not what you said in the video. There's direct sunlight on your pipes throughout the video. Carry on "finagling" (maybe look that up too). Hope you're at least enjoying the pool!
