Important note: In this video, when I wired the pump, I talk about a neutral wire. The pump was wired 220 volt which has no neutral wire. A 110 volt hook up uses one hot wire, a neutral, and a ground wire. A 220 volt hook up uses two hot wires and a ground wire. The pump was wired correctly for 220 volt, I just misspoke.

Thank you! That confused me. By code that white wire should be marked with a red or black tape at the pump and at the breaker to indicate it’s hot. My install, also a Pentair but only 1hp, is at 110v so exact same wiring. Thank you for the clarification.

Thank you for a very helpful and good quality video. I have a similar Pentair variable speed pump that is 8 years old, difficult to read the programming display. This video is a big help. When needed, I'll replace the entire pump system, rather than try to repair. I was confused by the wiring. My pump runs on 220 volts. It looked like you wired for 110 volts?

Some Pentair variable speed pumps will configure 110v or 220v on their own. This particular installation the pump was wired 220v, however I misspoke 110v has a hot wire, neutral wire, and a ground vs 220v has two hot wires and a ground. Feel free to call me if you have any questions.

Hi Mark, Thank you so much for the videos. I am on the HOA board and my pool company is fast falling from favor. So with your videos I'm getting educated. Something I would like to see, assuming it's not already there and I missed it, is a check list that should be followed with each visit by the pool company and what are all the holes I see in the pool? :) I'll explain. In the pump room I see 4 large pipes going underground. They are marked as: 1 drain, 1 skimmer, 1 vac, 1 return. Not sure what the vac is for. In the pool I see 4 skimmers (each has a drain like cover under it on the wall) and 2 dome top drains on the pool floor and I assume the drain and skimmer pipes pull on these 6 openings. I also see 6 or 8 plates/round covers on the pool floor, are they returning water to the pool? Now we're down to the vac pipe. Is there a special outlet somewhere to connect a vac? I may be way off here and would be happy to call you. in the pump room we have 2 HayWard sand filters and looks like each holds 300 pounds of sand. The top of the filter is chest high on me (I'm 5'8").

This customer spending boo koo bucks $$$$$$ on a brand new top of the line pump should have been given a quality install. This guy is trying to save money by taking short cuts, using the existing discharge fitting from the old pump (a 'no no') and using cheap schedule 40 fittings on the suction side, both of which will start leaking when the pump heats up. Much more cost effective and better for the customer, would be to install high temp unions on both the suction and discharge ports. No leaks, and entire pump can be removed/serviced and replaced without replumbing/gluing anything.

Not enough pipe in that discharge union…ffs, can’t believe he would film himself doing this.

Do yourself a favor and add unions.

Silly. For another $30 he could have used high temp unions instead of glued ntp adapters so that the pump is removable in about 20 seconds for maintenance and also for the next replacement. In fact the newest Pentair pumps come with theim. I'm so tired of "pool professionals" doing things to guarantee their own job security. Also, there is no "neutral" in a 240v circuit. Both L1 and L2 are hot.

Thanks for watching and commenting. 120 volt hook up’s use a hot wire, a neutral wire, and a ground. However the Intelliflo 3 HP variable speed pump can only be wired in 220 volts. 220 volt hook up’s have two hot wires and a ground. I did wire this 220 volts but I misspoke, thanks for catching that. There are several different versions of the Intelliflo pump, some come with unions and some do not. The Intelliflo that was installed in the video was the Intelliflo vsf which does not come with unions.
