What one would you recommend between the Guardian and the Spectrum for ease of use and features to a beginner in open water diving in cold climates?
@DiveSAGA4 жыл бұрын
It's a good question. I would definitely go for the Guardian actually. If you use coupon code FB5 upon checkout here: www.divesaga.com/product-page/ots-guardian-full-face-mask you get 5% off and free shipping too (in the US)

So I was surprised to hear you mention a butterfly valve. Does that mean that when in use, you're breathing in through the ABV but out through the regulator?
@seikibrian86414 жыл бұрын
A few months ago I installed the ABV in my Spectrum, and so I answered my own question: Yes, when it's open you inhale through the ABV, but you still exhale through the regulator.

I am bidding on the mask at the moment and on most of the videos show casing this mask you’ve been there answering my questions, thanks 👍🏼 How do you deal with the fogging problem?
@seikibrian86414 жыл бұрын
@@James-fe1et I just use the same fog-preventing steps I would with a half mask: baby shampoo and water mix, or saliva. I've only had a fogging issue once, when I had been working up a sweat before entering the water and forgot to immerse my face in cold water before putting on the mask, but I got that mostly cleared away by pushing the purge button on my regulator to force a lot of dry air into the mask.

Without abv: remove inner frame then installing regulator. With abv: install inner abv frame then installing the regulator Im confused, please help.

So what happens if you forget to close off the ABV and jump in the water with it open?
@CTFD135 жыл бұрын
SuperGlenn1966 I dive with this mask and abv. Had some waves wash over my head while it was open. Very little water came in, and you start breathing air from the regulator.
@seikibrian86414 жыл бұрын
*SuperGlenn 1966* "So what happens if you forget to close off the ABV and jump in the water with it open?" A few wave splashes won't let much water in, but if you submerge and then inhale you're going to wish you hadn't; your mask will flood, and you could even inhale a lot of water. BWRAF as always, and include ABV position as part of your pre-dive check.

Very stupid design decision not to provide an ABV from day one. They lost me as a customer a year ago because of this. FFS even the old Scubapro mask has one as standard.
@seikibrian86415 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Scubapro FFM has one. The Scubapro FFM also costs $692 versus $399 for the OTS Spectrum.

Update: I made many dives with the Spectrum before I got the ABV, and a few since. It hasn't made that much difference to me, but I don't make long dives to great depths where every minute of tank air is precious. By letting me save more than a few bucks by spreading out the cost of ownership, OTS let me buy a full-face mask that I wouldn't have bought otherwise. And now that the ABV is in full production, those who can afford one can now get it at the same time they get their mask, while those on a tighter budget can still do as I did and get it later. At $399 for the mask and $129 for the ABV, the $528 total cost is still lower than the (current as of May 2020) $709 for Scubapro's offering.
