Installing our Alaskan off grid cabin floor with Reflectix bubble foil | Splinting chicken leg

After watching Boss of the Swamp do a video on this product I decided to disregard a lot of the information from the "experts" that I read online and give it a try. The radiant barrier the redlectix / bubble foil creates really works. As soon as I got the bubble foil installed you could tell a noticeable difference on the cabin floor.
Insulating the floors of my off grid Alaskan cabin with reflextix bubble foil has its perks. It’s keeps the rodents from chewing on your insulation, it’s low R value let’s heat out and will keep the underside of your cabin from freezing and it’s easy to install.
Here’s a link to Boss of the Swamp’s video. • HOW TO INSULATE A CABI...
We also remove the splint from our roosters leg. At first our chicken couldn’t walk but after adding a splint to his leg he was able to put some weight on it.

Love The Boss he's a smart man after I'm sure trial and error. If you notice he keeps food in a cooler under his house for excess veggies doesn't freeze. May God keep his healing arms Grandma Jo. Thank you for the continued prayers for Grandma Jo. She doesn’t have to do chemo just radiation. That’s great news for all of us. Rocky is also doing so much better. Those Jays go inside the fence and try to get the chicken food now and as soon as the chickens see them they chase them out. It’s fun to watch.

Great work on Rocky’s claw! Getting a little dr. Pol there aren’t you two! Little tip on handling chicks/roosters: if you lay them flat on their back you can let them loose completely and do almost anything with/to them. Same if you draw a straight good visible line on a plank and lay them on their belly in front on that line, looking towards the line (length wise). You can let go of them then. The line will confuse them so much they don’t move. Thanks for pointing out Boss’s channel! Got me hooked to another PHO! Love it!

Hello you two! Yes I saw the Boss do that to his cabin. I used rug padding and scrap carpet. So surprised when I painted OSB board and skirted cabin with it temporarily for winter 100% difference now. I take it off in summer incase something crawls under in spring and summer besides my dogs. Need access to shoot vipers.🐍my cabin is raised 2 ft on 3 sides & one side only 1ft. I wish I had known about bubble wrap reflex sooner. You all have a blessed time. So beautiful. I've seen R.V.s with them using it in cabinets and window coverings for winter using velcro

What beautiful views of your Alaskan scenery from your property! Thank you very much. To you I'm sure it's just very common, but to us it's a real treat to be able to enjoy. Your chickens are very lucky not only to have a great living space but to receive the kind of care you and the Mrs give them. They are truly blessed! I've heard of the insulation used to keep cars and RV's warm but never one's floors warm in their home! I'll be very interested in your report on if you notice a big difference or not? Hey Brian this is just a thought when we build houses with crawl spaces similar to your application. We would always like to use closed cell spray foam for the fact that it adds strength as well as a vapor barrier as well as you don't lose any heat that you definitely notice on your feet in the house. It also Acts 4 moisture coming up through the bottom of your house when you have he inside the heat rises then it's pulling cold air from underneath your house up through it carries moisture with it then when it reaches the peak it creates a mold issue. This is just the thought Brian you would be able to heat your cabin with a candle in the long run. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Kale can freeze and then continue to grow later. We had a couple plants last around 2 years until the deer finally ate them. We recently had squirrels eating our chicken food in the coop and I think the squirrels beat up a couple hens pretty bad when the hens tried to push them away. The roosters didn't help. There are 4 - 5 less squirrels around now. Everything is coming together nicely at BOTS's place in NH.

Greets again from Hamburg in Germany. If you want to keep the heat inside and the cold outside in wintertimes- you can do 2 things right now: 1: Traditionell Windows a story about better isolation in cold aeras (If you have time make a video and film all of your windows so that I can see more how thick your walls are) 30 years working as a facility manager, building expert with carpenter background. I love old fashion old school traditional buildings out of wood, with clay bricks cupper straw. In Germany Austria Switzerland and many east European countries as well in many Scandinavian Countries, the old way building (before the lobby pressure from the chemical isolation industry created energy saving laws and new order in the “R value” area) Was total natural and with experience of hundreds of years, from one generation to the next. Climax is and was the most important “thing” that wants to be implemented. In cold areas thy cabin builders the house builder build not only one window per outup but 2! Many cultures loved lattice windows where 4 glasses or more found space in a frame. It looks cool but if one got destroyed got broken it was not so expensive to change the broken one. The glasses where kept through window putty. The first window frame was installed from the outside to protect the inside the frame from wind rain and snow. A roof overhang was a “must have”. Depending in how width of the walls (some had only 10 centimeter logs like dick proenecke I think- he also was a German rooted carpenter an my hero of Alaskan wild live he showed how fast a men was able to build a “lifelong cabin in the wilderness”) But there are walls that are 20 centimeter or 40 centimeter even 50 centimeter monster logs (Siberian spruce) or Bavarian spruce. Here one of the best log home builders in the EU they also build log homes in Canada! Good pics and nice information’s go to artifex-blockbau.de The second window was installed inside mostly to open into the inside. Casement for easy opening. Why 2 windows? The space between the first window and the second inside was the best isolation because air is the best isolation! The heat in winter was warming t he inside window so that he glasses don’t get ice- the glasses where much to warm- and the air was the puffer zone where the air broke the power of the cold that pressures through the thin glasses of the outside glasses. With 2 windows there was no ice on the glass! The wood stove did not needed so much wood! The 3 isolation-power was a classic Shutters. Shutters are traditional protection from storm, rain, bears wolves sun. Many strong winds can destroy window glasses buy throwing branches into the glass. The shutters are the 3th- isolation help for a traditional cabin home build. 2 or 3 centimeter thick wood are perfect to break the power of the winter wind the frozen air! Shutters look good if they are open and when they are clothe. They are also a theft protection! You can build them so that no one could easily break in! IN aeras where heavy snow can be expected- there are snow loads that can weight thousands of kilos (KG) if the roove is build in a way that snow could not stand on it (here we love snow on the cabin it’s the best isolation but the home must be able to wear me be 3000 kilos or more! It depends on how dry the snowflakes are Very often the snow falls from the roof and then it falls on the ground and day by day load by load you have fast 200 centimeter hart snow that can presses into the glasses and destroy the window! Window shutters are snow-load-protection in snowy aeras! Frank

Some storys about traditionel home building: Wood and air- the best isolation for a log home or a cabin. In Germany and other country’s we have log homes or wood houses in cold areas that are older than 500 years. Also thousands of “only wood houses” like the one from Albert Einstein. One of my “Building engineer-mentors” a professional in restauration of old castles and old homes (stone or wood) told me, that a had inspection of real old homes that never had a problem with moisture, fungi, or rotten parts- when they were right build in the beginning. (Konrad Fischer Info that is his name) For example: The house from Albert Einstein had a wood structure with 10 centimeter X10 centimeter planking’s (or call them logs) and then for protection from the outside another pin wood that protected from rain. Always an overhang of the roof and mostly a rain gutter wood because this is also a good protection. A rain gutter is a “must have”! So, first the structure of the house, then 2X4 outside and then on that the pine- horizontal assembled so that the rain could flow faster and will be not come behind the pine. There, where the pin touches each other must be nail a wooden slat to cover this. Wood will expand and wood is a living thing that expand in rain time and in heat summer time it can shrink and if a house is in a real wet forest- it keeps much more humidity than a house in the desert where the air is dry. Hard wood very seldom shrinks,(its hard for the humidity to come in the fiber we use oak for windows or mahogany or beech) but others wood can that has a bigger wood fiber and bigger air parts. Only air circulation/barrier between inside and outside was the “isolation” Wood breathes and wood regulates the moisture in the house. 10 centimeter log is enough for a real winter cabin, but as thicker the wood or the log, as better is the isolation power. Keep the heat in winter inside, and the cold outside. Some build their homes with cellulose as isolation between the 2 different wood- arts- Cellulose also “breath” it can soak moisture and give it away later. Others use wood ships in different sizes. Again, the air between the pieces are the isolation and it also breathes! Danger of “fake-isolation” in wooden houses? Yes, health problems-lunge infections- allergies and fungi and rotten problems in the house. Mineral wool (glass or stone) or other synthetic Isolations are “fake isolations” Mineral wool is often wrong uses and from “nonprofessional misunderstand” many customers are manipulated by the PR and marketing of the building and isolations-industry. Many tread this stuff like “a wool from a sheep” but they don’t know that there is no function in the mineral itself. It’s the dry air INSIDE the wool that isolates. And if the mineral wool has contact with rain or moisture then it soaks this and keeps it like a stalactite cave. After some months the moisture in the wool starts to rotten and produce a danger cancer producing fungi. If it is wet or had it soak moisture, it had lost its isolation capability. And once in the wool it never goes out. NEVER. So that is a reason not to use it between real wood logs or beams because wood always has moisture inside and this moisture will go in the mineral wool and then the mineral wool starts to rotten and then the wood starts to rotten. Today there a biological. Paper barrier? Can bring destruction to the house. 1: We must consider the constant humidity from the forest, the rain. This is called “Umgebungsfeuchte” in German surrounding-humidity! This humidity sticks on everything from the outside and goes into the wood that is breathing. 2: We must consider the humidity that is produced when people live in the house- in summer and in winter. Everyone is breathing how much liter water in an hour? Cooking inside? Not a clever thing in a cab that is not used 7/24. Better building an outdoor kitchen bear secure or wolve secure. Keep the cooking moisture outside. A “airflow barrier” is contra because it don’t allow the natural air flow of an house to bring the moisture out of the wood/ clothes) bed/ furniture/ the logs the walls and out of the house. Often “opening the windows and doors for air circulation” will also help to dry the house winter and summer. Remember: heat binds water in the air and wind flow must bring that package out. A barrier is wrong. A wood house must not be sealed. The sealing of a wood house is dry wood and air between the inside and outside. Styrofoam is also a bad isolation in the “wooden house”. It shrinks through heat and it becomes porous after some times and then it loses contact with the “walls” and then cold bridges can lead to fungi. The best was and is to build traditional. Only wood and air as an isolation! So “don’t give moisture a chance!” Take a look at some of the teaching videos from NORTHEM traditional building. I belive the best way would be- an wood lath outside but horizontal- then the inside with another wood blank and fill the space with fine your air dried wood dust from the saw! Or by it from someone else. 1: The wood ships or dust can breathe. In times of much humidity from inside is soaks it and later when the climax inside and outside is changed it dry’s automatically. A mineral wool with a barrier can’t do it. Whenever a mineral wool “is open and in touch with wood” the moisture goes in and never dry’s. Such wood ships as isolation can be used for floor roof and walls. And they don’t need or like barriers. Respect the laws of “nature” and the physic of naturel building material and you will have much fun with a house!

Happy Thanksgiving to the two of you! Give us a update on the effectiveness of the bubble foil. I will most likely do ours, the floor can be very cold 🥶 and we don't get nearly as cold as you. Loved the intro of video, I'm thinking sunrise. Take care!

It is sunrise. We face southeast which is nice and gives us a little extra sun in the winter months. The bubble foil make a noticeable difference in the floor. It still cool but not frigid cold like it was before. Hope you and the family have a great thanksgiving together.

Doesn’t look like insulation by the roll is going to? No use starting at the bottom of the stud.. I would have put the 2 x2 in foam. Then put on your silver wrap... What size is the floor? You want it to stay as warm as you can.

The goal is to skirt and heat under the cabin. We will have our water pump and pipes there and don’t want them to freeze. This area can also be used as a root cellar once its skirted.

Reflectix bubble foil and the power of cold Part 2: Building physics are basic to know for those he build homes traditional or modern art. The elements are “the enemies” of a building and the people how want to be protected from them in summertime’s or hard winter times. Cold has power to “go through walls” some walls have ne real isolation capability like stonewalls. Stone houses often where build in areas where logs where not available. Stones are solid but they soak cold like metal and give it into the house and the condensations of the humidity begins. Wood clay, bricks and straw are very good building material. In sibiria or Germany many had build with big logs- in real cold aeras a 10 centimeter log (like the one from Dick Proenneke in Alaska) is enough to keep the cold out if the home is heated well enough. I love Dicks stone stack and his oven system for cooking and heating. The rule is: As thicker the logs as better the isolation power. As lesser you need to heat you safe wood and the room is not overheated the air inside not to dry. Some in Bavaria still build without chemical isolation stuff like mineral wool. The build the fundament and then the bricks with 30 centimeter thickness. Then inside a cover out of clay (wall cluster 5 centimeter) and then color with natural color. Outside a clay-wall plaster. 5 centimeter. That are 40 centimeter- it will keep the heat inside and the cold outside. There is a system to measure how long it takes when outside the temps are minus 2o centigrade how long it needs to press through the walls until it is stopped by the heat from inside in the walls. This biomass has isolation power when it is correct build. Many build to fast to light with not much biomass in form of wood fiber-logs or bricks. Surly its hart to build on an island when you have to transport every idem. My Alaskan dream: I saw a light bit of the structure of your house. Its more like a “summer house for hunting and fishing” but I believe you can isolate it better. 1: IF you have a chance to crawl under the house- install Styrofoam- plates with15 centimeter thickness and isolate the floor from there. Screws with a plastic-plate to keep then in place. Isolate all position and “entkoppel” the fundament from the places where the structure has contact. Foam spray only if it is warm enough…in cold it works not. 2: If you can- build a second window- from inside 3:Build shutters. They reduce the cold-pressure on the windows. Even with 3 times isolated window The cold presses in the room and 1 meter away from the window you feel the cold. Keep the cold from coming pressing IN the house and then keep the heat inside. Don’t get rheumatism. I have got it in my armee times my wife also she was 25 years special police. 4: If you can isolate a second round from inside on the roof. Reflectix bubble foil, Will not change the situation. It’s a drop on a hot stone. If you would install 10 times the foil that could change it. Don’t compare climax from the Boss with your Alaska cold. Your wind and the cold is 10 timers higher also t he humidity from the ocean. You need monster- weapon against cold. The floor is important because if you can stop the cold coming in the house the feeds will be warm… And if you have time- make a film before you do a new project and ask me or the audience! You are not an expert and you can safe money time frustration and get faster a better result. I would love to see a short video from the floor under the house! Love Frank

I had 18 hens and a rooster that was given to me one of the hens didn’t have any feet they had frozen off and the roster was 13 years old they had gotten him for their daughter when she was little Nubby the footless chicken was so precious she would always sit by me anytime I was at the barn I would take in the car with me to see my mom I love her so much she got around fine but when she stood still be bobbled a lot I let them out everyday there were no dogs around so I thought they would be okay I had them for a few years and I came home one day and had dead chickens everywhere as I was coming down the road I saw a Boxer dog crossing the road with something white in his mouth my neighbors kids had come home to visit that day and brought their dog left him loose and he just had a hay day killing chickens I was heartbroken and the dog had no idea what a chicken was if it ran he chased it and he killed Nubby to two survived they were sitting on the barn rafters just terrified I had horses and had five gallon buckets in the stalls and Nubby had fallen into one was standing with her head just above water and couldn’t get out I had seen her jump up and sit on the ring of the buckets before but she had fallen in this time them she was in the barn with me one day and I had to run to town and wasn’t gone but thirty minutes and when I got back I couldn’t find her anywhere I looked for a week everywhere I even moved hay bales thinking she might be in them then one day I was getting hay and there she was she had fallen between some bales still alive but thirsty and hungry for a chicken with no feet she was always into something I’ve seen her back up to sit by me so finding her dead was heartbreaking
