Installing Our Second Dry Well | NDS Flo-well

Our first dry well is working well, so we installed a second one in another location of our yard. This is not a how-to video, just us documenting a home improvement project!

You have to clean out that drain pipe. It’s full of dirt and shingle granules. Otherwise good job! How are you guys liking the second flo well?

I've seen where bottom of barrel should be solid,drain holes should only be on sides,and use some kind of weep fabric over top and around outside of barrel,to keep sediment out,I'm using a plastic 55 gallon barrel

Thanks for sharing; I am considering putting in a dry well. When the dry well is overwhelmed; did water backup to the downspouts or did water just overflow from the dry well?

Hi there! This one hasn't overflowed that I've seen. But our other one has once or twice. The water just came out the top of the dry well.

You used perforated pipe, which will let water leak out before getting to the well. How did that workout?

So far, so good. It's what they said to do on This Old House, so that's what we decided to do.

@@jlew6977 perforated pipe doesn't allow the water to leak out before it gets to the well. Perforations are used to absorb surrounding groundwater and direct it to the well, which actually keeps the ground around the pipe more dry.

Quick question…what is ideal tape to use on the filter fabric? I thought that some may break down after so many years and thought I might need speed tape lol

Hi there ... I love your fun teamwork approach. We’re considering this option and just started looking at drywall info/DIY. I hope this doesn’t sound like a ridiculous question: I’m curious to know the reason for not just filling the entire hole with gravel. Is it that it would cost a lot more for gravel than buying the container? I was thinking a smaller hole would suffice too. The huge hole you had to dig was to fit the container. Thanks!

Hello there! I'm not an expert, but I think the benefit of using an open container versus a hole filled with gravel is the container can hold more water. The water can fill the bin and then slowly seep out the small holes and through the gravel and into the soil. Having a hole filled with gravel might work if you don't get too much rain, but I'm not sure! Good luck!

There is no reason at all to fill the hole with gravel. Indeed, you should not do so. Leave it wide open for greater water capacity and inspection. Regarding hole size: The manufacturer's printed installation instructions specify a 48" diameter hole. This size results in greater capacity and far greater absorption area. (Sidebar: Try hand-digging a hole 24" in diameter 48" deep. Ouch.)

The best solution for the overflow erosion is to...Dig a trench from the drywell along the line of erosion about 20'. Go down about 8"-14". Start out at the dry well...Go down about 8". Tap into one of the dry well holes ...The trench should have a 1" drop for each 10'. So 20' would be a 2"drop at end of 20'. Use solid weeping lines with punched holes...Wrap trench with non woven drainage fabric...add about 2" gravel. 2" drainage rock ...then lay pipe...put a cap on end of 20 ' section..Add gravel to ground surface...Pull fabric over the top of gravel...Place soil and seed ..The excess water from drywell will now be able to naturally leach into the area surrounding the 20' length...Then in the future you can always extend it..The drywell holds the water...The french drain ( leach lines) distribute the water evenly

If you need to install another dry well, rent a hydraulic post hole digger, use it to break-up the clay, digging is much easier that way.
