Installing PiHole on a Truenas Scale Server

I switched to Scale from Core a few days ago and learning the ins and outs of dockers and was going to get a Rasberry Pi set up for blocking ads but after watching this video i dropped Pi-hole on the server and it's running pretty well. Thank you, pretty clear and to the point how to install, you have a new follower.

Thank you for the clear and well explained videos. There's also a setting in pihole where you can point it to use your pfsense as an upstream dns server. This then shows up all the hostnames (instead of ip addresses) in your logs. I also really like your solid choices for programs to use in a homelab. Much appreciated! 👍

Love your channel! I just installed truenas scale and was looking for resources. You are step by step which isn't automatic for all channels. I can tell you have been this for a long while, SA probably, which unlike pure developers, you know the tech stuff but are still able to talk to regular folks.

Hello guys! I am following this guide and face some issue. PiHole itself works fine, however the DNS server can't be reached (browser says it can't find it when I add TrueNAS's IP as DNS in my router). What may be the problem?

Switched to Scale from Core. Noticed 2 problems initially- The pool was offline (a reboot fixed that) and the default compression was set to ZSTD-24 which is waaay too high and slow, ZSTD-2 will get you a better tradeoff for most use-cases without killing your write speeds.

ZSTD-24 is definately not the default, actually: ZSTD isn't even. I know, because I was actually the one who initially added support and discussed changing the default from LZ4 to ZSTD, which they declined ;-) Most likely you made a mistake....

For me sadly it didnt work, as soon as i switch the DNS Server my computer cant resolve any names. the dns settings look just like yours on the web interface and i have confirmed with nslookup that the ip is correct from the NAS server. am i missing something?

Can explain how to configure all the network settings here to include your router? I cant update gravity because of some dns resolver issue. I think maybe a tutorial explaining the network configurations would help.

How does putting pihole into the network effect using pfsense unbound dns resolver? Do you disable the dns resolver on pfsense ?

I have never been able to install the TrueNas version of PiHole on Bluefin or this week in Cobia. My Truecharts PiHole was destroyed in the upgrade to Cobia since giving up trying to fix it I have made several attempts to reinstall it but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have either PiHole app working in Cobia???

Cant find a tutorial on how to update pihole on trunas scale. Says update available. i am not super github/docker savvy. have stopped the pihole, deleted it, updated packages, tried to pull new. cannot get it to work. UNRAID handles it automated flawlessly... frustrating.

Log into TNS, click on the apps page, there will be three dots to the right of each app, click on them and if there is an update available it will be highlighted, click on update a let it do it's thing.

PfSense is a firewall that has plugin you can use. One of the plugins is PfBlocker with does basically the samething.

Hello, Quick question, do Truenas scale applications get installed on TrueNAS OS drive? or into the storage pool drive? Is TrueNAS OS drive used for anything else other to run OS itself?

No the apps get installed where every you designated them when you originally activated the app screen. They will be stored in that folder, and you will not be able to access them. The boot drive is only for the OS. That is why most people use a small drive for a boot drive.

There is a problem with this method. Everytime truenas restart, catalog has to be synced once again. It takes a lot of time to finish the process. But hey, pihole works like a charm! Thank you for the tutorial
